Chapitre 24: The human realm(1)

Dahlia didn't hear a word he said as she quickly dialled her mother's cell phone number. "Mother! You have to come home soon." She chirped excitedly.

"What's going on? Is Jasmine back?" Sophie made a guess. It had been ages since her husband or daughter spoke so happily. They had all been depressed since Jasmine left, so it was the first thing she thought about when she heard her younger daughter's cheerful tone.

"She will be soon. She told me." Dahlia excitedly announced. "Come back soon, mama. I miss you very much too."

"Thank goodness! I will be there soon. I'm going to book the ship right now!" Sophie sounded like she was running as she spoke. "Excuse me, miss. When does the next ship to Effinchil leave? In an hour? Please help me book. Dahlia, wait for me. I will be home soon." She was rambling, which made Dahlia certain that she was not dreaming.

"You will be late for school." Harry reminded her, as he helped her pack her bag.

The girl disliked school and would often beg to not go. However, she was too excited to throw a tantrum and quickly grabbed her sandwich which she would snack on later.

When she returned in the afternoon, her mother arrived just a few minutes later.

"Where is Jasmine? Is she here?" Sophie anxiously looked around the living room.

Harry looked dejected as he hugged her. "Dear, it's complicated."

"What is complicated?" Sophie's smile faded, and she could only brace herself for the worst.

"Dahlia heard her voice." Harry explained, trying to make the situation sound exactly as their younger daughter explained earlier.

"So it was a dream." Sophie was disappointed.

"Not exactly. She was awake when it happened." Harry caressed her cheek. "I hope it is true. I hate to see you so sad."

A tear rolled down Sophie's cheek. "My baby is alive. I have a feeling she is."

Jasmine hugged her shoulders as she looked out through the window. She did make a promise to go back home, but how could she? So many things were happening around her which had no explanation. She had set Dairon on fire the day before, and she was scared she might hurt Dahlia and her parents too. Heck, she didn't even know how it happened. She should have asked Dairon but she fell into slumber.

She felt a presence behind her and Dairon was there, approaching her.

"There is such a thing as knocking in the human world." She scolded him.

"Well, in this realm, we simply teleport." He grinned at her after successfully getting under her skin. She ignored him, which made him realize that she was in no mood to be teased by him.

"About yesterday…" He started.

She turned around in panic, her eyes flashing golden for a second. "I don't know what happened either. Believe me."

"I know." He reassured her. She was unaware of the presence of her powers, which was why she didn't understand the sudden changes in her body. He had wanted to hide it from her and hoped it was a phase that would come to pass. But from the looks of it, it was going to last longer than he thought and it was growing.

"You believe me?" She asked in surprise, having expected him to blame her.

He nodded. "Would you like me to call my friend over? He might have an idea of what is going on."

She nodded in agreement. It wasn't like she had a choice.

"The thing is, it might be an intrusion of your privacy." He warned in advance. "He will probably ask many questions and most of them might be personal."

As expected, she hesitated. Everyone had things they didn't want to share with anyone and he respected that. Unfortunately, one—or many—of those things she didn't want to talk about might be leads. "Think about it and tell me what you decide when you join me for breakfast."

"I will." She sighed in relief when he didn't force her.

By the time she was done freshening up, she wasn't any closer to coming with a conclusion. She slowly brushed her hair as she thought about it, then noticed the flames in her eyes that were turning golden again.

"No no not again!" She closed her eyes but it was too late. The mirror shattered into smithereens. It had happened before so it didn't give her as much shock as it did the last time, but her heart still raced and she was scared of facing the damage she had done—which she had to face nonetheless.

"What?" She gasped when she inspected what was supposed to be the wall behind the mirror. It was a metal door instead? Why would anyone use a mirror to cover a door? Dairon must have never wanted her to notice such a thing, so she stopped herself from calling him and tried to push the door open, which didn't budge even though it was not locked.

She shrugged and pulled away, only to notice characters engraved on it.

"What's this?" She studied the characters and ran her fingers over them as she tried to remember where she saw this kind of language. Was it perhaps the language of the gods?

"Oh, there's a translation." She was overjoyed when more characters appeared, in a language she could understand. She read the phrases out aloud.

"Narilia, the fourth of the four,

Open the door sealed by… Tolvethor? That somewhat sounds like an incantation." She frowned at the absurdity of it. Why would anyone write such a phrase behind a mirror?

She should probably tell Dairon about what just happened. A flash of light filled the room, making her squint her eyes from the immense brightness. She covered her eyes with her arm before turning to inspect the source. To her surprise, the door had slightly swung open, letting in a huge beam of white light from the other side. So it really was an incarnation.

She hesitantly stared at the metal door with a racing heart, it seemed to scream 'push me open'. She wondered what was on the other side. Was it something good, or was it dangerous?

"Only one way to find out." She sucked in a breath and pushed the door open. There was nothing on the other side but immense light which made her feel like she would be blinded. She tightly shut her eyes and wondered whether she would be able to survive if she took a step into the light. She took a step blindly and the light seemed to disappear, so she opened her eyes.

"Efinchil?" She was shocked when she realized where she was. She was in Dahlia's school!
