Chapitre 50: It begins

I really don't mind writing, it's the editing that makes me lazy...

Looking at my reflection in the mirror I really wanted to grow up as soon as possible. I could feel that my body had so much untapped strength just waiting to burst out and show my superiority.

Looking to my left my sight stopped for a moment on Rina's delicate features. To the right Maya's hands fastened the last strap of my leather armor.

Life can play a lot of games on us and the places the road leads us to are not always the ones that we thought we would take.

Thinking about it all I didn't even know when a small smile crept to my face.

I looked at the boy in the mirror again.

8 years old and already bloodied by few battles.

Normal child should still "play" Knight or a Lady under their parents watchful eyes.

"Is everything alright my Lord?" Rina was more perceptive them Maya so she already saw me being deep in my thoughts.

"I just can't believe the road that brought me here." I said offhandedly. "Do you know I could read before walking? When I said my first word or for that a sentence, the maid servant screamed so loud that half of my grandpa's castle heard her thinking I was a monster." I chuckled at the memories.

"What happened next my Khal?" Maya started to get curious as well while both of them inspected all the clamps and straps making sure all is in order while listening to my runts.

"Haha my mother came in with few men like an army storming a castle. She was worried something happened to me, you must know I was still not much bigger than an infant at that time." The girls waited as my face showed sadness on it. "At first they took me for a devilspawn. Wanted to kill or abandon me thinking I will bring a calamity to the House." I smiled again and looked at both of the girls. "You know what my mother did?" the ladies shook their heads. "She plunged her dagger directly in the man's eye for even proposing such a thing. None of those that spoke against me on that day are in this world anymore." what for me was a fond childhood memory made the two of my servants shudder.

I walked around the room grabbing the necessary things, like my weapons or the small first aid kit that each legionnaire had not minding the girls not doing their job.

I just felt like sharing at that time.

"I was never a normal child, I even think my mother is a bit crazy for going with my ideas not even questioning them much. But one thing I'm sure of, is that there is no one in this world who loves me more then her..." I was now ready to leave just waiting for my knights to call for me.

I poured myself some water and ate a piece of the apple that was nicely cut on the plate and sat down.

"Because of my powers I knew more and could see more, each battle, each bloodshed, execution, greed, passion, pain, love. I saw it all." I could feel Arthur coming here. "Sorry for bothering you with that... I- I get sometimes like this before the battle... Thank you for listening." I got up the moment the doors to the room opened.

Ser Arthur scanned the room with his sight lingering on my two servants bizarre behavior a moment longer before coming back to me. "The troops are ready my Lord."

Hearing the words I was waiting for I left the room with steady steps.

~~~
"Hold the shield wall with your lives! If you fall everything is lost!" Ser Gerold as the commander inspected the men before the battle started.
Even now the men he led were not sure the simple defensive positions were enough to keep the enemies out.
Caltrops, ditches, dirt mounds, bridges. These things aren't exactly something that normally Dothraki had to deal with, but still...
The newly formed 1st Aries Legion consisted from fresh, unbloodied recruits. Their hands shaking, blood drawn from their faces because of fear with the only thing keeping them together being the experienced Elite officers in charge of them.
Shouts of these exact men the single reason for their troops to not start running away like the Lhazareen people usually did.
"Hold your ground lads!", "Stay calm and remember your training!", "Keep it together and remember why you fight!" could be heard every few minutes from different directions.
"Look! It's the Great One!" hearing the new information everyone looked to the side where they could see a child riding to the front of the massive Khalasar that positioned itself few leagues away.
"Ser Arthur we should be there with our Lord." Gerold Hightower wanted to grab the first horse he found and ride to the Lord he sworn to protect.
"Our Lord has Ser Bryce and Noya with him." The sword of the Morning words might sound reassuring and yet if you would look closer you would see his hand gripping his sword hilt making his knuckles white.
"Aye, and a hundred Dothraki. We would never agree to something like that during our time as King guards." the old man's words were true and the Dornishman agreed. "Yet I wouldn't change the boy as our Lord for any other King I served before."
Everyone could see the dedication the child had to small folk, his family and lands.
At the beginning the choice they made was out of necessity, yet after the years spent with their new Lord everything changed.
Following someone from necessity and following the same person from their free will was a totally different thing.
"Look, they arrived."
~
In front of me stood the man that I had to kill one way or another.
"Khal Aggro!" I stayed saddled ready to leave in case something went wrong.
After splitting with Ser Arthur I came to my small party of 100 fastest Dothraki screamers I had in my Khalasar.
Accompanied by two of my sworn shields and three blood riders we came to start our play.
The success or failure of the defense rested on my shoulders.
"I heard a Khal came but what I see is a child that should be sucking mares tits!" hearing him I wanted to say that it was going well... sarcastically.
"Oh? The child that managed to capture your Khalakka and one of your blood riders. What does that make them?" my Dothraki now sounded naturally and it was for me like speaking in my native tongue.
We could see the shock on his men faces when two horses with the hostages stepped out on my sides.
"Stop!" the man shouted at his men that were ready to storm at us.
I looked at their reaction with a confident smile that I never planned to hide. The more angry he is the better for me.
Looking at his body that was only a bit smaller than Drogo from the show I knew that a duel was out of question.
I mean, I can still fight on horseback, but on the ground he would destroy me in seconds.
"Let my blood go and I promise to give you quick death. Otherwise I will raid your puny defense, kill and enslave your men and give your whores to my men to enjoy before selling or killing them!" He still sounds so authoritative.
I didn't say a word, just ordered Red to get closer to the captured blood rider. My sight never left from the Khal and by the look on his face he thinks I'm willing to do as he ordered. Even the warriors behind him are smiling and shouting profanities... Oh how naive...
I looked at the captured man, his hands tied by a rope, mouth blocked with a piece of cloth.
I could see the fear in his eyes when they met mine, he struggled a bit wanting to escape.
Back from the man I looked at the Khal. He probably never had to bow his head, understandable looking at their numbers, about 50 000 riders... Definitely more than we expected, but it's too late to change anything... I plunged my dagger directly in the hostage throat.
"Will you listen now Khal Aggro?" I stabbed again this time in the eye. The body started to lean back almost falling from the horse but to get my point over I stabbed it again and again making not only my enemy, but my men fear me as well.
That was the emotion I felt beside anger from the other side.
I cleaned my blade on the dead man's clothes and placed it back in my sheath.
My arms covered in blood to my elbows after my small demonstration.
"You come to my Tribes land to order us around? Who do you think you are!" After they regained their senses if not for Noya's blade on his son's throat we would be already dead.
Weapons drawn from both sides made it clear we cannot resolve our differences now. Thinking about it... Could we ever?
"Take your dogs and go elsewhere! Here only death welcomes you!" I spit on the ground to prove my disregard for him and his.
I could clearly see his body trembling from anger.
"You son of a whore! I will break you all, you will not know death easily! Your body will rot..." I stopped listening to him after the first sentence and signaled my men to get ready.
Red was moving to the other hostage with a steady rhythm. Slowly increasing his pace.
"You had your chance." my sword decapitated his only son, his grief and anger released by a loud shout indicating the negotiations were a failure.
We knew that our job here is done as the hundred that came with me now rode back to our defense hastily with few Khas with their Kos on our tail. It was scary, but the adrenaline pumping made me and my screamers laugh and shout our feelings out.
Now it begins.
Chapitre 51: Looking death in the eye
"Nock...! Draw! Loose!!"
I was so happy to hear this words, we were some distance away from the Kos and his forces that pursued us and I can't even start to describe how happy I was for choosing the fastest riders to go with me.
Unfortunately I must admit that I underestimated the determination of Khal Aggro and his Khalasar.
We rode back like crazy, I was laughing most of the way back. Even Noya let her usual self go and made the sounds the Dothraki make when they charge at their enemies. Ser Bryce tried as well... once.
You must understand the thrill of what we did when thousands of furious screamers come after us with such a fury that you can almost split it with a sword.
For my three Blood riders this was the craziest thing they ever did, one mistake, one slip and it's all over, like balancing on a sharp blade.
Thanks to the surprises that we prepared beforehand and the sacks of caltrops that I had my men take with them to spread behind us when we run, we managed to gain some distance, enough for us to get back to our positions under my best archers cover.
The rest waited until we were out of the way to start raining arrows as the first line of defense we had prepared.
I hastily jumped down from Red's back and grabbed my bow from the legionnaire that was waiting for me.
I was very exited for the upcoming challenge, unfortunately... I had my first chance to see what we were dealing with it all it's majesty.
"By the Gods..." I just froze.
As far as my eyes could see there were Dothraki charging at us... I was before in a battle that had thousands involved but this... I wasn't ready for this...
I could only watch as the front of their attack fell down because of our caltrops and the small holes in the ground that we dig, but that was like a drop in an ocean, this didn't even slow them down. The next rider just felt like the first one, tripped by the one in the front... I assumed it would have a domino effect, no... it did not...
The next and the next just rode through it all leaving a red paste of what was left from the unlucky men, the simply squashed them under the thousands of hoofs like it's nothing.
Then the ones that were in the front fell again, this time to the ditch just in front of us, there was no way for them to get out, more and more started to pile up, I watched in terror, blood already drained from my face as the ditch was slowly filling with bodies, the painful neighs of dying horses, terrified screams of their riders as more and more filled the ditch.
Not one or two... this I could take... hundreds, thousands of painful cries...
They could not cross the ditch, there were still some of the Dothraki that chose to jump in just to leave their horses and climb the hill we made only to die by the spears of our shield wall.
"y L..d!" I was scared... really scared. Did I do the correct thing by challenging them like that?
"y L.r.!" We were not ready for this, I watched in a daze as arrows and crossbow bolts swished close to my head from behind me downing more of the attackers in front.
"My Lord!" I finally came back to reality when Gerold tackled me to the ground, I could see him wince from pain when an arrow lodged inside the space where his armor connected on his back.
The man just bit his teeth, grabbed me by my collar and pulled me up to my feet.
"Now is not the time my Lord! There is a battle to fight, you can think about it all you want when we get out of here... alive!" He punched my chest gently to encourage me and smiled.
He is right, it's not the time...
"Thank you Gerold..." I was to embarrassed to look at him, I froze like a fresh recruit, now I was so emotional that I used his name! That was the first time!
But now at least I can concentrate on what's important.
I left the man not even looking back, the shame was to fresh for me to face anyone now. Since Ser Hightower was here, then I'm sure that the rest of my guards and men saw me as well... Fuck!
I scolded myself for thinking how great of a warrior I am, the truth is... I'm still just a rookie, better then the normal ones, but still just a rookie...
Stopping next to an arrow bucket I started grabbing one after another and just nocking, drawing, aiming and letting loose. It was impossible to miss in the sea of the charging Dothraki.
One shot after the other men fell, out shield wall was holding for now, but there was no end to the waive of the enemies.
It was so loud, sound of broken spears, sword hitting the shield wall, arrows swishing over our heads and the screams of pain from both sides... madness...
I don't know how much time passed when the Dothraki stopped charging like crazy and started to organize each other looking for a way to brake through our defense.
Their archers returned fire from horseback speeding from our left to our right, I didn't even think how many shields were changed, how many arrows used, the wooden wall now looked like porcupine yet they didn't give up, they didn't ride to the other bridges, they just charged relentlessly with a crazed look in their eyes...
I looked back and saw the civilians dragging the wounded or dead away to the medics that were ready to save everyone that they could.
It was time.
"Ser Gerold!" I shouted with a sour throat, I didn't drink anything for the last few hours since the battle started.
"Ser Gerold!" I saw him looking at me.
I made a gesture with my hand and bloodied fingers from the bowstring and he got the message.
Next thing I knew a war horn sounded and the flag indicating heavy cavalry charge fluttered in the air.
Few minutes later I could hear the sound of heavy stomping, the earth started to shake and even the Dothraki archers looked around.
"Covering salvo!" The Elite commanders gave the orders to let loose the arrows to block the riders stationed a bit further to keep our forces safe as much as we can.
Arrow after arrow almost covered the sun when from our side there was a sound like a crush and we saw the Dothraki archers being literally catapulted in the air.
Next, an unstoppable force of my men in full armor cut through them like a hot knife through butter.
One after another felt from a lance, spear or sword giving us the moment we needed to catch our breath.
"My Lord, drink!" Bryce placed a water pouch in my hand, I bit my teeth as a stinging pain came from my bloodied, blue and green, bruised fingers.
"How are we doing Ser Bryce?" I asked before feeling the cold water refreshing my body like a stream of life.
"We're holding for now my Lord, the Elites are keeping the men in check, most of the rookies got used to the fighting and the rotation allows us to have always fresh men at the front." he didn't look so confident as his words.
"But?" I asked as he now had my full attention.
"But we can not keep it up my Lord, if they charge again like at the beginning or change the strategy we are done for..." he said never leaving his sight from the heavy cavalry that was now almost done with their charge.
"Let's hope that we hurt Khal Aggro's pride more than we hoped to..." I looked at the Dothraki forming for another charge.
I knew my hand needed some rest so I changed my position with a wounded crossbow man letting him go to the infirmary.
I laughed happily when he didn't want to leave his post even with an arrow in his shoulder, the medical stuff had to drag him away.
Small incident, but because it made us all laugh the atmosphere became a bit lighter.
Is it what they call looking death in the eye with a smile?
