I look at Cleo as she drunkenly dances in place, and sigh. You’re probably wondering how we ended up at a bar when the plan was to eat Thai food and watch a movie. Well, let me tell you, as the movie progressed, I became distracted by the messages glowing on my screen, which in turn made me despondent. Cleo noticed and dragged me out for a night of “fun.”

I won’t pretend that I don’t like to dance, but I’m just not in the mood. The slow tempo of jazz music thrums softly through the shadowed bar, and the light chatter of the crowd is welcoming. My vision wavers slightly as I take my seventh shot of tequila. Cleo leans her head on my shoulder, humming along with the music as she takes another drink. “You know I love you, right?”

I smile crookedly in reply. This is the Cleo that amuses me the most. I like to call her philosophical because she’ll get drunk and give me advice. She does it every time.
