__________
After coming back to Beauxbatons, Charlus started the second book. He attended all the classes and still paid attention since he had a strong interest in magic. He hung out with his friends and Lucky in his spare time. After he came back, they started mounting the horse in horseriding. They started learning a simple french tune in their music class.
In potions, they started with the boils cure potion, and the mechanism behind it's working, as well as key interaction of the ingredients which made the potion more effective.
One interesting development was that they had to attend an entirely new class. Arithmetic class. Since everyone was homeschooled, they didn't get proper schooling in the field like the muggle-borns. It was taught by an old man called himself Dr Linkletter. He was the son of a squib and a muggle. He had told them that he had a PhD at Oxford University for statistics. He was almost 70 years old.
He had spent the first month revising the basic operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. After that, he covered fraction and then decimals.
By the end of the year, Charlus had learnt how to convert fractions into decimals, and how to perform the basic operations on fractions and decimals.
As for potions, they had finished the Strength potion, the Forgetfulness potion and the Herbicide potion. All the ingredients for the potions had to be explained clearly, so it took a lot of time. In the future, it would not take as much time for each potion, since the basic interactions had already been taught. This concept is very much like learning chemistry. Once a bond or reaction is explained clearly, it's applications will be vast.
In horseriding, the class learnt to mount and also sit stably on the horse while it trotted forward. Over the course of the next year, they would learn how to actually ride the horse. They would have the horse galloping across the fields by year-end.
One thing they learnt that they previously didn't know was the sport played in Beauxbatons. Beauxbatons banned quidditch due to the high injury rate that was observed. To compensate, they introduced Polo.
Polo was a game played on a horse, and it involved two teams. Each team was four players each. They each would have mallets with long, flexible handles to drive a wooden ball down a grass field and between two goalposts.
Introducing this game sparked a huge controversy. Since the origins of the game were muggle, a lot of purebloods opposed the game. However, the school explained that it helped students gain more enthusiasm when practising horseriding and improve teamwork.
One of the major reasons that helped introduce the game was the students themselves. All the students had found Quidditch to be idiotic, as it didn't make sense to have the entire game revolve around one person.
Since there were no houses are any of that sort, students had to make their teams by themselves. They played in brackets of under 14 and under 17 for boys and girls separately. Since the 11th years, 12th years and 13th years were people who were studying to gain Masteries, they were less in number, and thus they weren't given a tournament.
Charlus, Henri, Lucas and Lucifer had already decided on the spot when they learnt about Polo that they would make a team and win the cup at least once. They weren't bad, however, they weren't exceptional either. The one trump card they had was Henri. He was amazing with the horse. It was like the horse was his servant. It listened to everything the boy said. The boys strongly felt that they had to have a horse racing competition at least once before they went home. Henri wrecked them. The rest of them could only make the horse trot. When they tried to have the horse gallop, all three of them fell off and ended up in the hospital. But Henri was a natural. The way he sped through the field made even Professor Otto Mannkusser astounded.
Their professor was a german squib. He was very young - only about 20 years old. He was stout, had blond hair and talked very politely. He was very lax and a bit of a pushover.
Professor Mannkusser had repeatedly praised Henri for his skills. In classes, he would highlight Henri as a role model.
___
When the boys had ended up in the hospital, everyone except the three aforementioned laughed to death. Everyone found it incredibly funny and foolish - to try and make a horse run fast to win a race.
When the topic of Polo came up, Fleur immediately disassociated herself from the sport.
"I am only learning to ride the horse because it is required. I have no wish to break a leg."
Selene showed a little interest, but she said she wouldn't play.
"I would love to play. But participation requires guardian permission. And it is a year and a half away. Why care now?"
Charlus was very lucky at that aspect. Sirius didn't look at the forms he needed to sign. He was too lazy to check. He would just sign and ask Charlus to fill in the sections like name and other fields.
At the beginning of the year, the academy had sent the form for the purchase of a magical horse for the horseriding class. When Professor Mannkusser looked at Charlus' form, he asked him.
"Why is your guardian's handwriting so sloppy? I have seen 10-year-olds write better than this."
Charlus struggled to answer. "Uhh.... he forgot... to go to handwriting classes?"
"Then why is his signature so impressive?"
"I'm not sure. Maybe he just memorized the signature? I'm sorry Professor, I will ask my godfather to correct his handwriting."
