Chapitre 120: Bested by newbies
Two rock needles get intercepted by the shield-bearers and break upon impacting their shields. The remaining two rock needles swish past the shields and find their targets.
The instructor gets hit in the shoulder but that barely even makes her flinch. The last rock needle punctures the throat of one of the healers. The poor girl clenches her throat with her hands and drops to the floor while choking. She's done for.
The other healer runs over and tries to help but everyone knows it's futile. Removing the rock needle will allow too much blood to enter her windpipe and leaving it there will make healing impossible.
Using the time gained in which the healer is distracted with her companion I charge at the shield wall before me. My strength should be sufficient to force a gap into that shield wall is what I think as I throw myself at the shield-bearer in the middle.
I hit the shield with all the momentum I built up and smash right into it. The shield and its bearer don't move even a centimeter. I know what's happening, he has activated the tower stance skill.
Since most of these guys are new adventurers they usually don't have the typical skills of their classes yet. Sadly, this one had the one that was really useful for descending against charges.
I shake off the dizziness and roll back to evade the shortswords the shield-bearers thrust my way. I launch another rock needle into the gap they opened to attack and hit the middle guy's arm. His leather armor takes most of the impact but I can tell he feels the sting of the needle.
The lesser salamander breaths a wave of fire at the shield wall. The shield-bearers are intimidated by the heat and retreat but they do so in a coordinated way that keeps the shield wall intact.
The other dungeon lizards mount a charge under the rock lizard's lead and manage to make the shield wall buckle. One dungeon lizard even manages to slip to the side and get around the shield wall entirely.
"Gale push!"
The instructor launches a wind spell that blows all the monsters back rendering all efforts useless. The mage next to her finishes his chant and launches a fireball at us. A fireball that is simply swallowed by the lesser salamander. It can breathe fire so it figures that its throat is immune to fire damage.
Still, we can't go on like this. We had the element of surprise on our side this time so the swordsmen behind the shield wall were too flustered to counterattack. That won't work again.
I already launched half the rock needles I prepared for this battle and the damage I did was minimal. Sure, one healer is down but the other is now making sure to stay hidden behind the shield wall. The instructor also seems barely inconvenienced by the rock needle in her shoulder. And I don't think I'll have enough time to use the ground spikes effectively.
When the shield wall begins to advance again I steel my resolve and charge once more. Both mages are still chanting so I probably have little to fear from them at the moment.
Moments before I again collide with the shield wall I push off the ground and become airborne. My strength stat can easily catapult the weight of a goblin over two meters high and carries me over the shield wall.
While in the air I'm out of reach for the humans' weapons but as I feared all three swordsmen immediately launch an energy sword my way. Seems like the shield-bearers aren't the only ones who mastered some class skills.
I launch an energy dagger of my own to cancel out one attack, parry another with my daggers, and attempt to dodge the last one by turning in midair. The maneuver doesn't quite work as the last energy sword slashes past me leaving a cut in my side. I ignore the wound since it's shallow and won't hinder me much.
I land between two swordsmen and cut both of them down in a swift and fluid motion. I quickly sheath one of my daggers and hastily launch my remaining rock needles backward. I don't have a good grip on them so they are only moved by earth magic but hopefully, it will be enough to aid the lizards with that shield wall.
Without looking at what my rock needles did or didn't hit I continue forward. If I can only take out the instructor the lizards should be able to handle it on their own.
In order to use the shield wall as cover from my rock needles, the mages and healers had to stand quite close. Now that I have gone over the shield wall I am only a few steps away from them. Unfortunately, a few steps are too much. The instructor has finished her incantation.
"Piercing gale!"
I can see the attack and know what it is since she yelled out a nice description when she cast it but I can't do anything against it. I try to raise my daggers and angle my body but then the spell is already upon me.
A sharp gale pierces through the left side of my stomach and leaves a fist-sized hole in its wake. I'm not quite dead yet but about to be.
Whatever, I'm close enough to launch an energy dagger at the instructor which should at least wound her enough to weaken her.
I raise my dagger but before I can gather enough energy to launch my final attack a sword exits through my chest. That damned third swordsman!
I really got killed by a newbie!
And worse, the instructor is still alive and mostly well. At this rate, she'll wipe out the entire group of lizards.
Not that it has anything to do with me at this point. I'm engulfed by darkness as I wait to be respawned. Even if I use the ten-second respawn, the time to get back to the battle along with the negative effects would make it a futile effort.
So Navi, mind telling me what's happening?
