Aguirre and Jonas snooze by the glow of the sensors on their tripods. A few feet away is a little tent in which their professor-friend twitches and gibbers in his sleep.

Jonas wakes to an odd sound, a strange merging of a whistle and a click. It sounds like toneless air passing between a couple of bony projections.

Jonas throws off the flap of his sleeping bag and kicks Aguirre's concealed foot. He, too, surges to wakefulness.

A shadow-form stands above them.

Jonas looks to the sensors surrounding their camp, at first suspecting an intruder. Then he realizes that this is the professor, who has been with them inside the protective ring.
