( Stuff Lying Around)
In a haze of fatigue, Reskeme stagger away from the large doors into the building. Today was a long day. His stomach rumbled, reminding him of his hunger. One meal a day was standard for him. Reskeme was wondering how in the hell he was going to get the money to feed himself. With his stomach rumbling in pain, Reskeme decided he would get a donation from one of his classmates. After all, it's not like any of them were his friends. First, Reskeme needed to find the food hall for spending the future copper.
Reskeme walk around the main floor of the building. The halls were oddly silent. Reskeme assumed it was because they were all in study and training. Now that he thought about it, the mages' class was pretty short. And luckily for him, Reskeme noticed the door as he was walking down the halls. One of the many doors had a sign stating food hall. Reskeme could smell freshly baked bread drifting down the hall, making his mouth water. There was no need to enter however, Reskeme didn't have even a single copper.
Moving back the way he had come, Reskeme had to drag himself away. Food was now his top priority. He should find a door with only a little decoration on it. Surely it was a terrible idea to rob someone who was too much more powerful than him. Reskeme needed to go to the part of the guild building that was the poorest students. This thought made him realize he was one such person. Robbing, um, borrowing from someone in his hall was not the worst idea.
Reskeme moved down the hall with a bounce in his step. The boy made a turn and finally arrived at the hall of the poorer students. Reskeme needed to pick his target. Someone who had a door with some markings. He was concerned that if he chose the door right next to his, Reskeme would be the primary suspect. He didn't want to get caught.
With twenty doors in the hall, it sure was difficult to decide what door would be his first victim. The people of the guild were probably mages. He shuddered, they might have nasty traps on the stuff they wanted to keep. He shuffled restlessly with a shudder at the thought of being turned into a frog or a rat.
Reskeme went towards one of the less shiny doors. Surely beginners of the guild wouldn't be proficient with higher-level magic? One door had a white painted line in the angle of a tent with another tent on the bottom side. And the middle with a slash halfway down, making a diamond pattern that looked similar to a cat-eye. How odd, a thief that was religious? It immediately drew Reskeme to that door.
The symbol of the gods of the Laurentia. Reskeme was hesitant to damage symbols of the gods. Also, he knew he needed to leave nothing to show when he stole something. After checking down both ends of the halls, he checked the door. Luckily the students sometimes forgot to lock doors, Reskeme paused when it was unlocked, surely he would have some trap or other. After this thought, he was cautious. Reskeme opened the door, his shirt almost catching as he slowly stepped aside.
Light from the hall lit the small room, revealing a small wooden trunk. Reskeme ignored the chest as it was definitely locked. And moved to the head of the bed. In Reskemes experience, people kept their valuables next to their head. Reskeme's heart skipped a beat, repeatedly glancing at the door. Breathing deeply, Reskeme ran his hands over the bed feeling for lumps. There, on the end of the bed, was a wool bag full of something soft.
How marvellous, Reskeme thought: This bed, how lucky this boy must be rich. He lay on the bed sighing in wonder. Now sure this person had something valuable in here. He shook the soft bag clink! clink! What was that? One more shake clink! It must be his lucky day. Reskeme found a tiny hole in one side and pulled apart the stitching. Before reaching his hand into the fluffy bag, he felt around until he felt two pieces of metal.
Reskemes heart was pounding, his hand shook as he pulled them out and lifted the two coins to the light.
"Two coppers!" Reskeme mumbled with excitement.
He noticed he made a mistake in his excitement. There was a pile of soft wool on the bed. Reskeme tried gathering it up, but the mess was too obvious. Reskeme cleaned the fluffy white cloth up the best he could before deciding he should turn the blanket over.
Hoping the person who lived here wouldn't notice in the darkroom, Reskeme departed. Checking out the door, one side then the other. To make sure no one was there, Reskeme stepped out before quietly shutting the door. Now was as good of a time as any to get some food, Reskeme thought.
Thanks to the other guild members' donation, Reskeme could eat this week. Now with a spring in his step, he sauntered down the dark corridor towards the food hall. The thought of food made all the stress of stealing and the day's pains seem less. Two minutes and a couple of turns later, he arrived at the food hall. Upon entering, there were tables in rows and a kitchen with a presentation of fresh foods. It had a counter in front to stand behind with pieces of bread and meat that were laid out steaming.
Just looking at the selection of meat and bread made his mouth water, not to mention the smells. Noone was in the hall, but it was clear dinner time was close. Reskeme moved towards the food.
Someone was whistling a tune while baking bread and cooking some meat, their back turned to Reskeme. The Chef turned gaping at him, his eyes bulging. The chef grabbing his butcher knife.
Reskeme swallowed as the man stepped out and yelled, "Back beast, stay away from my food! The Reskeme stumbled back at the sight of the knife. The chef paused, eyeing him up and down.
"Dif you bring money? The food is not free." said the Chef twirling his large knife.
Reskeme breathed deeply and held up a copper to the chef expectantly.
"Can I have bread with meat?" asked Reskeme respectfully.
Seeing the money the chef replied, "Sorry boy, all I can give you is a loaf of bread for the copper, no meat."
Reskeme wiped the drool from his mouth, staring at the bread. Seeing the boys face the chef laughed, "Toss me the coin and ill give you a loaf." said the Chef.
The chef took the coin from Reskeme. Taking some pity, the man got one of the larger loaves, placing it in Reskeme's hands. Reskeme couldn't take his eyes off the large loaf as he went and sat at a table, taking a huge bite. Reskeme moaned, licking his fingers as he chewed the warm bread.
He decided he should ask the man's name.
"What is your name, sir?" asked Reskeme.
Being polite hurt no one, Reskeme thought.
"Aye lad I be Carl what be yer name?" Replied the Chef.
"I'm Reskeme, "
Reskeme licked the flavour of the bread from his fingers, sighing happily.
"Where can I get some water?" asked Reskeme. The Chef pointed to a barrel in the corner with some wooden cups. With water in hand, the boy moved back to his seat. Relaxing taking long drinks of water.
With a smile, the chef went back to work, nodding towards Reskeme. When Reskeme finished eating the delicious bread, he went over and thanked the big burly Chef. Now that he wasn't so focused on the food, he looked over at the big guy. In Reskeme's opinion, the Chef was twice as wide as Terrance and about a head taller. The big man looked like a kart, Carl had a black beard, dark skin and a bright red apron.
Reskeme kinda liked Carl, he was the first person to show him any sort of kindness in this place. Waving goodbye to the Chef Reskeme made his way out of the hall. The Chef may have tried to kill him at first. But that was ok, the food made up for it. Now it was study time, Reskeme thought as he headed back for his sleeping quarters. He wondered if the chef was from the city; he looked like he was from Pentir.
Reskeme grinned, he was full for the first time in weeks, with money in his pockets and a scroll tucked in his belt.
Reskeme checked both sides of the hall before entering his room. He needed to get clean, so grabbing the bowl used for bathing Reskeme left the room. He got some water from the water barrel in the corner before he splashed water on his shirt. He shivered, the cool water covering his body. Reskeme wasn't feeling social and didn't want to bump into any of the other students in the guild. He took his cleaning rag, ringed it out before dipping it in the water. Reskeme winced, running the cool towel over his neck with a sigh.
His sweat and grime of the day truly smelled awful. He was shaking from the cold water, but now he felt clean. Reskeme rinsed out his rag before returning to the room and locking the door. Finally, clean Reskeme pulled out the scroll of the elements and opened it.
Scroll of the Elements
It has often been said, in the world, there are 5 basic elements and 4 soul magics. Most agree that Green magic or life magic is a combination of multiple elements. Because of the external nature of life magic, we associate it with the basic elements. There are arguments by professors of the academies of Laurentia, who shout furiously to anyone who will listen about how life magic is more soul magic than being one of the basic elements.
The element of life associated with green.
Fuses flesh together and returns the body back to health and is thus a part of the body. While others say, we often project life magic to make plants and animals grow. Reskeme really did not care what the stupid professors thought. ' all he cared about is how the magic works. Reskeme skipped passed a few more diagrams. One professor was more right than another because he had higher reviews on his articles. With a long drawn-out sigh, Reskeme tried to get himself more comfortable on the floor and kept reading.
The element fire associated with red.
Fires primary use is attack magic. Fire is useful for some defence magic. However, most hotheads don't see its potential and use it to burn people and monsters. Without ever trying to master the element to its full offensive and defensive potential. Fire has two major weaknesses: water magic and earth magic, while it is strongest against life magic. Note that wind magic amplifies fire to its fullest. This combination of wind and fire grants some of the most intense attacks available for basic elements.
We associate the element of Earth with the colour brown.
Earth magic users are the strongest in defensive magic, limited only by their creativity. We do not limit mages of the earth to defence. Many can create dense rock, while the biggest counter of earth magic is water magic.
We associate the magic of wind with the colour grey.
The winds are good for both offence and defence spells, usually depending on the caster to what will be stronger. Wind magic is weak against earth, having trouble breaching the tough defences of an earth mage.
We associate the magic of water with blue,
Water magic is good for both offensive and defensive spells. We recommend water magic to go into healing as water mages. Doing combined spells with life mages can create healing unlike anything else. Mages with both affinities are sought after and sponsored by nobles and royals alike.
At this point he was getting excited. Magic sure was interesting even if it was boring to read, 'these professors really need to make it more interesting.
Note that, all 5 main elements can be amplified with a focus. Doing so enhances whatever aspect the focus represents. Reskeme was wondering what the hell and focus was? maybe Rufus would know.
Soul mages have a unique ability to summon a familiar. Unlike other regular beast tamers, the beast is their other half, this beast is unique to the summoner. If the familiar dies, that severely weakens the caster as the death of the familiar takes half of their soul?
At this, Reskeme grasped to the scroll tightly. That meant he could have a companion for life. Reskeme was wary of using that kind of magic The downside of the familiar dying was bad, Reskeme couldn't even guess what kind of beast his familiar would be.
The four main soul magics are body, soul, and mind. Note, That Destiny is only listed because I'm required to write it. Any Respectable mage knows that Destiny magic is a myth. Many branches of the soul magics are available for purchase. We suggest "The Soul Magics first addition, for beginners. If your are more advanced buy the later additions." by Master Mage Laurin, a well-known scholar and Professor of the academy of Laurentia. If you are looking to purchase The Soul magics Scroll check Drents local magic shops. Reskeme threw the scroll at the wall in disgust. Why was everyone out to take all his money? How did this damn scroll even help him?
