Chapter 71 (Reskeme Pov)
Reskeme groaned the odd rocking side to side was making him feel sick, he kept his eyes closed and massaged his temples, his head felt heavy while throbbing madly. He took in several deep breaths before getting the courage to open his eyes, his body jerked widely and his head bounced off the wooden floor. groaning he sat up feeling nauseous, his throat felt dry and he had to smack his lips several times in a futile attempt to remove the foul taste of bile from his mouth.
the wooden box kept on swaying, staggering to the edge he leaned over the side of the box and vomited onto the ground. The reason for his torment appeared to be the wheels beneath him travelling along the bumpy road. Reskeme glanced to the front of the cart, he would find who his torturers were and seen the back two people. one was a woman her hair short she was dressed in a drab brown cloak while the other was slightly wider around the shoulder.
All around him in the cart were wooden crates stamped with various symbols, he realized he must be in the army rations cart. Reskeme Croaked "where is some water?" The woman turned around, she smiled, although she was missing eyebrows and had a cut above one eyebrow it was definitely Carley.
She tossed him something and he reached up to grab the object, the leather pouch approached him much too quickly, the water skin smacked him in the face. Reskeme yelped more from surprise than pain, he grasped the leather container and drained half of the warm liquid in one go. His second drink made him choke but the soothing liquid was good as it wet his sore throat.
Reskeme slowly lay back down, he stares up into the sky just now noticing the noonday sun. over the sound of the cart he caught the sound of boots on stone and the sounds of moaning. Feeling secure in the company of his squad and damned exhausted he drifted back to sleep fading into the sweet embrace of dreams.
He woke up shaking and screamed, Carley, said," are you alright?" Reskeme said," Sorry i had a nightmare, there was soo much fire and burning bodies, the fear i can feel it i can still feel their pain and suffering when the flame took their lives!"
Carley said," I think the Darva killed more than we did." Reskeme said," but we won the fight." Carley turned to him her face a blank mask she said," look ahead of us." slowly clambering to his knees reskeme stared over the heads of the marching soldiers.
his heart skipped a beat, the fortress walls crumbled exposing the broken inner buildings, reskeme swayed feeling another wave of dizziness he wondered what had happened to his familiar. He doubted the sneaky demon was dead but he couldn't be sure, reskemes head throbbed, he gritted his teeth bracing himself on the cart wall. Staring at the fort he was shocked at the sheer amount of smoke, he couldn't believe everything was gone, well mostly gone.
THe cart shook as it trundled forwards uncaring of the death, Reskeme wondered if they had won, the long twisting line of soldiers in front of him passed near the fortress towards The city of Drent. Reskeme turned around and caught sight of the second cart behind them. Alongside the cart soldiers walked or in some cases leaned on each other.
White cloth wrappings covered their arms and legs, he caught sight of a man tied to a saddle riding behind him, the man's chest was wrapped in bandages with red stains on the front.
Reskeme said," Why don't we stop and let the healer mage heal the injured?" Carley said," the damned Darva killed him last night, our only healer mage and he was killed," Dusty said," may they rest in the clan house of lytheria goddess of war." Reskeme opened his mouth to speak, he felt a coldness spreading down his back.
Sighing he decided it was for the best, praying to the gods was probably a bad thing for him, holy inquisition would surely punish him for blasphemy. After all, no god would want a foul demon to pray to them. Reskeme felt bile and staggered to the side, his body rebelled and he collapsed to the carriage.
Reskeme said," Carley what is wrong with me I feel weak?" Carley said," Master Kellar told me you have backlash," Reskeme said," what is backlash?" Carley's face turned pensive she said," well he said something about you not using magic for two or three weeks."
Reskeme felt for his mana, the slight trickle of mana entering his body made him thrash around wildly as his body convulsed. Reskeme screamed and wrapped his hands around his knees, the trickle of mana left his body and he shuddered as he rocked side to side. he felt a strong hand on his shoulder gently shaking him,
Carley said," It will be alright, if you do not use your magic for a few weeks you will be back to your normal idiotic self." Reskeme said," I can't say you are wrong, using mana to see what would happen does make me an idiot." Dusty said," I agree, you could be the town idiot, they might even pay you for it." Reskeme said," thanks Dusty you are very helpful." Carley laughed turning back to the oxen pulling the cart.
Reskeme felt woozy as he dangled over the edge of the cart, every bump made his stomach turn and bile rise in his throat. After finishing most of the water skin and covering the ground in some awful he began feeling much better.
reskeme turned over and searched the cart for his weapons he found his knives in the leather case next to him and the case containing only two remaining Darvan javelins.
Pushing aside boxes and rattling sacs reskeme dug through the stacked items in the cart, He said: where is my Naginata?" Carley said," oh that piece of junk, I left it in the dirt, the blade was bent and chipped not to mention the shaft looked like you stuck it in a fire." Reskeme said," that cost me 15 silver, how on Laurentia am I going to get that kind of money again." Carley said," only 15 silver? you can pay upwards of 20 gold on a master weapon.
Reskeme choked, he felt like he was going to pass out, maybe the absurd price or the burning fort to their left who could say. Dusty said," I heard the lord Harish has a sword that cost him 10 gold, he liked it soo much he bought two of them." Reskeme said, " Two? that means he spent enough gold to feed me for the rest of my life on two pieces of metal." Carley laughed, She said," It figures you only think in values of food." Dusty said," if I had twenty gold I would be able to leave the army, this war would be the least of my concerns. "
Reskeme sat down afraid he might fall, a tree branch past over the cart as they entered the forest along the trail towards Drent. Reskeme said," well I just think putting gold and silver on weapons and clothes to be stupid, just think bread every day, and if I was lucky sweet cakes the ones with frosting and maybe chocolate.
Reskeme felt hunger rising in his chest, the stench of the fortress was behind them as the cart bumped and rattled along the dirt path. He ignored Carley's grin, just because she liked to eat bland tasteless army food didn't mean he had to enjoy it. The army followed the trail down the river and reached the crossroads to Drent.
Much to Reskemes dismay, the army kept along the path towards the Hernair waterfall Garrison, Carley pulled the wagon to a halt and handed the reins to a stern soldier with half of his sleeve missing. Reskeme picked his javelins from the cart and slung them over his shoulders, he strapped his knives to his side and gently lowered himself to the dirt as the world swaying around him.
Carley said," let us go, the walk back is going to take us the rest of the day, we need to report this to lord Harish." Reskeme said," what about the army?" Dusty replied," the commander sent scouts ahead of us but we are the backup scouts sent to make sure the message makes it, no telling if there will be Darva hunting along the roads." Reskeme cursed, he said," and here I was hoping for a nice comfortable ride back to the safety of the city." Dusty smiled he pulled tightly on his pack and started walking down the path.
Carley passed reskeme a heavy leather satchel before she turned and followed after him leaving Reskeme behind. Cursing his bad luck reskeme stumbled after them his aching muscles groaning as they warmed up to the exercise.
