Chapter 67
Reskeme trudged after Kellar the man's pace quickly leaving reskeme far behind him, the clank of feet filled the night, the river protected them on the left, the trees stood ominously on the right. A howl pierced the night sky, he felt his shoulders tense, Reskeme only hoped the wind was making soo much noise. Yawning he did his best to stay moving forwards, his legs burned and he was wobbly on his feet.
He felt the deep thrum of a howl, the sound felt like the Darva was right next to him the deep howl chilling him to his core. The sheer hate and rage he could feel from the tree line made him shudder with anger. Reskeme glanced at each of the humans eyeing which one he should kill first, he could smell their sweat and could feel anticipation, gripping his naginata firmly he aimed for the back of a nearby human.
Snarling he pushed it down holding back the hate, frantically he leaned forward to push the cloaked man in front of him. The man stumbled to the side staggering before reskeme could cross the ten steps between them. From the corner of his eye, he caught movent on the tree line as something retreated back to the cover of the forest.
He felt his rage cool, his bubbling hatred fading turning to satisfaction as he watched the human soldier in front of him clutching wildly at the long javelin protruding from his chest. Reskeme shuddered, the emotions began to fade and he felt concerned for the man on the ground. Another soldier ran over crouching next to the man and started digging in his pack.
Reskeme watched for several minutes while the second soldier frantically tried to save their dying comrade. Reskeme waiting over the man watching unable to help, he wondered if this was how he would die, lying in the grass along with strangers walking past. The bustle of footsteps never stopped as tense soldiers only increased their footsteps their rank and file making them strung out in 2 lines.
The man slowed down his flailing, his eyes closed and the man helping him stood shaking his head. Reskeme clenched one hand over his nose, one thing no one told about in the hero tales was the smell of blood and the fact that dead humans smelled awful. The soldiers walking past them all shared grim faces, Reskeme felt his mortality the ease at which they could die was frightening. He searched the soldiers for his squad, when he had stopped they were in sight but now he couldn't see them. Reskeme felt a burst of energy and resolve, with a spring in his step he speed-walked passing the trudging soldiers.
His limbs felt heavy as his short jog drained his burst of energy in only minutes. He couldn't take his eyes off the tree line, the threat of an enemy spear kept him alert. Reskeme felt his eyes drooping and stumbled, his eyes shot open and he slapped himself. The sting of pain on his face shocked him awake but his hazy thoughts soon pushed away drifting him gently away from the pain.
Reskeme felt a burning pain shoot through his cheek and he stumbled to the side, grasping his cheek. His eyes burned watering as he stares at Dustys grinning face, Dusty winked at him, Dusty said," you're welcome, you can thank me later." Reskeme yawned, he said," well you didn't have to hit me soo hard." Reskeme massaged the pain from his cheek.
Reskeme said," where is Carley, " he nearly pissed himself when he felt a hand grab his shoulder. whirling he almost drove his naginata into her chest, Carley crouched low staring at him a big frown on her face. In the darkness, he could see the bags under her eyes. Reskeme scratched the back of his head grinning at her, he felt his face burn from embarrassment.
Reskeme said," sorry Sergent, I was startled, I have been pretty jumpy after watching a man get hit by a javelin ." Carley said," well if a Darvan warrior sneaks up on you and grabs your shoulder maybe you will hit the warrior." Dusty laughed, he said," If he flails around like that against the enemy he is doomed."
He felt his body slowly begin to relax, chuckling reskeme turned back to the march following the line of soldiers to try and escape the enemy trap. Reskeme felt the pull of a mage channelling mana as a light breeze drawing him to the forest ahead. His hazy mind didn't react as a chunk of rock exploded upwards a pillar of stone pushing from the ground sending several soldiers scattering through the air in different directions.
The water behind them splashed wildly and the ground shook, he staggered, Reskeme felt his heart race as the screams of soldiers finally reached his ears. A long blaring horn filled the night signalling an attack. Reskeme crouched frantically searching for cover as he watched the treeline 100 steps away. The soldiers to either side of him formed a hasty line of two soldiers one behind the other preparing for the rush of enemies. Reskeme felt rage and hate the premonition of approaching Darvan warriors as the bushes rustled and Darvan warriors broke into the open.
The warriors rushed across the gap closing the distance with frightening speed to the vile human in seconds. Reskeme glance to either side, the soldiers on each side of him had their backs to the water with weapons were drawn forming a line of spears and swords. Reskeme felt the rush of energy as someone down the line channelled a massive amount of mana.
Reskeme stumbled, off-balance his body swaying from the flow of mana a tugging he couldn't ignore. Bright runes formed on the tree line illuminating the night like a bonfire, a moment later there was a flash as the attack formed over a group of charging Darva. Reskemes ears rang and he blinked his eyes wildly trying to remove the spots as he tried to focus on the carnage.
Rage mounting he took in a deep breath gaging at the stench of burning hair and flesh as he channelled mana, Reskeme reached over his right shoulder drawing one of his 4 javelins. He willed his mana through the rune on the metal point smiling at the swirling green mana as it formed around the sharp steel. Reskeme watched the warriors up and down the line jump or dive low trying to tackle the soldiers or grab their feet.
He glanced to the side and was preparing to throw his spear a Darvan warrior stood on the chest of a human soldier as smoke rose from the destroyed leather chest plate. Reskemes nerves were on end the screams of the dying made his arm shake, he cocked back his arm but was stopped, Carley gripped his arm, she said," save your energy, that is too far to hit with your terrible aim." Reskeme said," why are we soo strung out won't we be easily picked off?" Carley knocked an arrow to her recurve bow, she drew the string taught to her cheek and fired.
Lowering her bow Carley said," the commander kept us spread this so a mage cant wipes out half of us with one attack." Reskeme watched the arrow she fired fly the 100 steps from her to the Darvan warrior atop the dead soldier and strike it in the side causing the warrior to stagger. Reskeme said," nice shot, especially since you can't see well in the dark!" The warrior stumbled but righted itself and bore its teeth showing bloody fangs. Carley said," I got lucky, get that spear ready, my bow cant pierce their armour at this range damn I wish I hand a longbow right now."
The moon shone brightly in the sky the three-quarter crescent giving the humans a slight advantage. Reskeme crouched next to Carley as another horn blasted 3 distinct signals, He asked," what does that mean?" Carley cursed, she turned towards the sound glancing down the line of soldiers." Carley's face turned a lighter shade as she frantically stares at the Darvan warriors harassing the humans and back to the treeline.
The soldiers began to shuffle as two Darva ran from the trees, unlike the Warriors they had bright leather armour studded with metal, the usual warrior's dark fur was replaced by light coloured fur dusted with a shade of grey. One of the Darva leaned its head back and howled, the sonorous note tore through the night causing reskeme to take a step back.
He charged mana into his spear lining up the throw and hurling his javelin with all his might towards the Darva. The 50 steps between them weren't easy but his throw was on target a streak of green blurring through the night sky. The second Darva seen his throw and tilted its head, Reskeme watched in fascination as the air shimmered around the two a layer of blue mana forming as runes appeared in moments.
Reskeme watched in amusement as probably his best throw ever was deflected harmlessly to the side skipping and sparking as it passed by the two Darva. he felt his heart skip a beat when the Darva in a lead bore its teeth, Reskeme had the distinct impression it was smiling at him. He wasn't the only one on the field to notice the new arrivals, an arrow deflected off the blue shield as though a fly were hitting a pane of glass.
Carley said," we need to run, we have no chance of fighting those two mages, if we stay here we will get slaughtered." Reskeme glanced to his right, Dusty drew back his bow again and fired uselessly at the mages again. Dusty said," I agree with the Sergent we are dogfood if we stay here." The Darvan warriors were running back towards the tree line, Reskeme noted a few were limping and some dead lying in the grass unmoving. He glanced to his left, He looked past Carley Farther down the line of soldiers all the Darva were falling back or at least trying to retreat.
The humans mercilessly shot arrows at the retreating warriors. Reskeme felt his blood turn cold down the line three more Darva stood shrouded in mana seeming to wait for their retreating comrades as they stood in front of the grouped humans. Reskeme felt his body tremble as he felt them all begin to channel pulling in a truly absurd amount of power. All the warriors Didn't disappear into the trees The Darva formed a circle around the two separate groups of mages forming a formidable barrier of teeth and claws.
