Chapter 38.
01. The squad of soldiers and Reskeme left the city in haste. Reskeme had immediately come to the realization that riding a horse was not his favourite activity. Carley was leading the group and pushing the horses on a nice trot. Reskeme felt like they were flying and almost fell off every time the horse slightly turned. He was slowly getting better at this while riding thing, The most challenging thing was after an hour Reskemes spells wore off on the horse. Luckily no one was looking back and there was no one on the clear dirt road. Reskeme covertly channelled his mana and wrapped his first layer around himself, he almost fell off and decided he shouldn't try to cast a second layer.
02. Reskeme bounced his butt on the saddle every time the horse took a lumbering step. He didn't understand how anyone enjoying riding these things. Reskeme started watching the squad ahead of him and realized they weren't bouncing like him, they were balancing on the footsteps on each side. Reskeme waited until the squad slowed down and slipped his feet into the slings. The straps seemed a little short he thought but realized he could put all his weight on his feet.
03. Reskeme now only slapped his butt half as much and decided he enjoyed horse riding much more. Brad glanced back and noticed Reskeme was still on his horse, Reskeme glared at the man who made him experience this kindoff torment. If He hadn't found out how to stand up when riding he would still be miserable. Reskeme started steering the is horse a little bit with his reins, The horse really didn't like that and snorted angrily back at him.
04. Reskeme started getting the hang of reins and after another 10 minutes, he no longer needed a lead rope. The horse he was riding wouldn't have needed it anyway as it seemed to just follow the group whether he wanted to or not. Reskeme was happy he was no longer getting led along like a dead weight, he was much more excited to be able to control the horse by pulling on the reins. Reskeme had initially disliked riding a horse, after two hours and a lot of bouncing he was finally starting to like it.
05. Brad slowed down after a while and passed him his naginata, Reskeme was a little uncomfortable but figured out he could rest the butt end of the weapon on the toe of his boot and easily carry the weapon. Reskeme was confused when brad passed back a long leather case with a strap. Two metal spear points poked out of the hard case. Brad said," It's a loan from Katherine she says you will half to pay her back later." Reskeme smiled and used the strap to fasten the spears to his back like he had seen a guard do. Reskeme could tell both he and his horse were much more comfortable after he finally stopped squeezing his knees to stay on. Reskeme made sure to recast his illusions every time they faded and was otherwise extremely bored. He was lucky the escort was not interested in what they already passed and only cared about what was ahead of them.
06. Reskeme and his escort finally stopped for a break 3 hours after they had started, Reskeme waited, he watched how the soldiers got down and followed there lead. Reskeme dismounted the horse and realized with dismay his legs were stiff and sore causing him to waddle around like a duck. He was extremely annoyed and tried not to show his awkward walk, the soldiers all smirked when he walked passed them. Reskeme grumbled to himself and tied the horse to a tree near the other horses. The group had stopped for lunch and a break for the new rider.
07. The forest they were walking through was thick with short trees and dense undergrowth, Reskeme felt he couldn't run through the trees without getting scratched all over. Reskeme couldn't tell what type of trees they were and couldn't see more than 100 steps away. He was sure that anything trying to sneak up on them would easily be able to. Reskeme was given a hard loaf of bread and some dried meat, even though he needed to drink water to wash it down, Reskeme wasn't one to say no to food even if it wasn't very good.
08. Reskeme and his squad remounted their horses and continued the journey down the forest road. Brad grumbled, "I wish we didn't have a bright red beacon for the enemy to see." Carley said," I'm sure the commander will fix the colouring of their uniforms after a few of the messengers get killed." Reskeme looked down and realized he was wearing the brightest clothing of the whole group. Each of the other soldiers was wearing something brown-grey or green to camouflage with the forest. Reskeme smiled deviously, an hour later he felt his illusions break. Reskeme could feel his mana brushing against his skin when it came apart.
09. Reskeme didn't want to be killed for wearing bright colours soo he did the most logical thing, He channelled his mana, changed his skin colour, and for his second layer, he changed the colour of his coat from bright red to dark green. He smirked and thought, I just half to wait until they turn around and notice. He took his mana gauge out from under his shirt and looked at the blue circle. Much to his surprise, the circle was half full, he was pleasantly surprised and hoped some of his mana would come back over the trip.
10. Reskeme was lost in his thoughts and gripping his spear gently when a confused Brad shouted "what the hell!." Reskeme had completely forgotten about his practical joke and was just as confused as everyone else. The entire group turned in their saddles and looked at the green clothing of Reskeme. Carley and Dustin were just as confused as Brad was.
11. Carley said," how in the hell did you change your clothing on the back of the horse,? and where did you get the green uniform?" Reskeme had realized she was talking about his illusion and said," well I have actually been wearing this uniform since we left." The soldiers looked at him then at each other. Reskeme said," don't get soo upset, I am just good at riding in the saddle and changed when you weren't looking." Carley brought an end to his joke when she said," where did you put the other uniform?"
12. Reskeme waved his hand through the air and said," I used magic of course" All the guards looked even more upset, they all hated mages pulling tricks on them and didn't much appreciate funny business behind there backs. Carley said," All right that's enough, Its good you changed your outfit, do try to warn us next time you do that again." Reskeme simply shrugged his shoulders at her, he wasn't going to tell them that, He didn't want them to know his secrets.
13. all the soldiers kept glancing at him for a few more minutes until they decided he wasn't going to fly off before they decided he wasn't up to any more tricks. Travel continued for 3 more hours, causing the group to take another break much to everyone's excitement. Even the hardened soldiers were not immune to riding a horse for 6 hours in one day. Carley had made it clear the only reason they were taking a break was the horses needed to eat and drink for a while. The squad had been following a small trail for an hour before they finally arrived at a fast-flowing river.
14. Reskeme knew there was no way he would be able to swim across that river, Carley pointed to the river and said," this is the Hanava river, and is only passable in a few places for 100s of leagues." Reskeme watched the water flowing passed at terrifying speed, The river was at least 400steps wide in this spot, he found he agreed with her assessment. His squad watched the swift river for a few moments before following the bank up the river.
15. Reskeme enjoyed the late day sun on his face, He loved the feeling of cool air washing away the smell of sweat. He caught the faint sound of groaning and the rattle of a cart, The squad slowed and moved to the side of the path. A cart escorted by two soldiers and pulled by two horses was coming down the path and was the reason for the noise. Reskeme noticed the grim faces on the soldiers escorting him, He found out a few moments later what had them in a bad mood. The cart was full of soldiers, they were missing limbs or lying on their backs unable to move. Each soldier was wrapped in bandages and had a look of horror or fear on their faces.
16. Reskeme couldn't look them in the eye and felt his stomach rebelling in protest at the site of half a dozen men and women missing limbs, while covered in blood-soaked bandages. Reskeme stared at his saddle horn unable to bring himself to look at the faces of the soldiers who might not return to the fight, or in some cases might not survive at all. The squad continued through the forest now much more alert, they were also in a much more grumpy mood.
17.Reskeme was starting to think his butt would never stop aching, no matter how much he switched positions and changed his stance he still felt a throbbing on the insides of his legs. Reskeme ended up trying to ignore the pain and focusing on his surroundings trying to imitate the soldiers. The sunset causing the riders to slow their pace and continue at a slow walk instead of a quick walk. Reskeme asked, "why don't we use a torch?" Carley answered," why don't we tell the entire enemy army exactly where to find us?"
18. Carley said," and besides the moons usually make it bright enough to see the path." Reskeme looked up into the sky noticing hundreds of stars and a moon with a slight tinge of blue on it." Reskeme wasn't sure how well the soldiers could see but he could recognize the outlines of trees and the shapes of bushes in the darkness. Reskeme noticed a small critter in the darkness and said quietly, I see something in that bush on brads left. Carley turned to him, She said," I can't see anything more than a dark outline of a bush, how in the hell can you see something in this kind of dark.?"
19. Reskeme grumbled, he said," I use magic of course." The soldiers grumbled to themselves and continued on their slow walk. Reskeme was only trying to help get some fresh travel food only to realize the soldiers couldn't see very well when it was this dark out. If He was being honest reskeme didn't envy the guards. Reskeme discovered over the next 3 hours he enjoyed travelling at night, for one thing, the sound of insects chirping and birds calling was relaxing. He also didn't need to recast his spells every couple of hours and was able to just ride along watching for small animals.
20. A patrol of Soldiers carrying torches rounded a bend and startled the hell out of Reskeme and the squad of guards. Reskeme was lucky he remembered to recast his spells when the guards came into sight, That would have been bad he thought. Carley said," we already passed the watch, these are the guards that are coming to see who we are. Reskeme said," we passed soldiers hiding already?" Carley said," yes there are outposts hiding in the trees that are there to warn of any of the enemies."
21. Reskeme watched the Sergent hail the guards and walk forward before speaking with the leader and waving him and the rest of the squad forward. They passed the group who continued their march silently into the forest. Reskeme and his group were once again in darkness, they rounded a bend and came to a large clearing of the forest with a large torch covered fortress in the middle. The group was spotted almost immediately by the guards on the walls and were yelled at by some angry guy. Reskeme was surprised when Carley yelled," we are here with a message from the city!"
