Chapter 36.
01. Reskeme stared in confusion, Kellar was drawing on a piece of paper and pointing emphatically at each curve of his drawing. Reskeme had initially been excited when Kellar had said he would teach him the basics of runecraft. Kellar was looking a little more frustrated than at the beginning, The master mage first showed him a complex set of squiggly lines all grouped together in a difficult pattern. Kellar changed his lesson After reskemes head started smoking from trying to solve the Rune. Reskeme was sitting on the ground looking at the flat piece of wood Kellar was drawing on.
02. Kellar cleared his throat and said," Alright since you don't know any runes we will start with a basic mana transfer rune." Kellar continued the lecture by pointing at the drawing, He said, In order to cast a spell on a weapon like your polearm and throw it you must draw the rune that corresponds with your mana. Reskeme perked up when kellar said that, Reskeme said," can I start my weapon on fire and throw it?."
03. Kellar sighed and said," Yes! Yes, you can throw the weapon when it is on fire, Seeing Reskemes daydreaming face Kellar said loudly," Hey! pay attention, I'm only teaching you one of these damn runes soo you better remember it." Reskeme finally stopped his slacking off and focused on the deadly mage, He watched Kellar draw a rune that didn't seem to make sense, The rune was simply a line that flowed in an odd firey pattern with a single line before connecting in an odd circle. Reskeme looked again and realized the runes looked like the outline of a flame now that he thought of it.
04. Reskeme was happy and blurted out, "It's the image of a fire, "Kellar sighed with relief at Reskemes comment, and seemed a little excited. He pointed at Reskemes weapon and said," now draw that rune on your weapon with your fire." Reskeme refused right away, and said, " there is no way in hell I'm breaking my weapon when I don't know what I'm doing." Kellar laughed excitedly and pulled out a knife with a thick flat blade.
05. Reskeme realized it had been Kellars' plan all along to give him the knife and he was testing to see If Reskeme was indeed a moron. Kellar said," be careful, channel only a small amount of mana, and draw this rune as small as you can with your flame mana." Reskeme took the knife in his hand and eyed the Basic rune Kellar had drawn. Reskeme channelled his mana and visualized the rune onto the weapon, This was followed by his mana slowing following the line and creating a rune similar to the one Kellar had shown him.
06. Kellar said, "Now the fun part, channel some mana into the rune and we will see if you did it correctly." Reskeme had done many stupid things over the last week and decided he wouldn't do what Kellar was asking. Reskeme Said, "No, putting fire mana into the rune could break the metal," Reskeme remembered seeing his flames tear through armour like they were nothing. Kellar smiled and said," I'm glad you didn't try to power a rune without checking it first, the last trainee needed a week to recover from the wounds the rune gave him."
07. Reskeme stammered and said," why in the hell would you let me do something so dangerous if you knew I would get hurt." Kellar said," We are in the army, Letting idiots become mages is not what we do." Kellar said, "Mana is extremely dangerous and runes are no exception, you have escaped injury this time because you were smart enough to know it was dangerous." Kellar stared at the boy intensely, He said," on the battlefield, there is no one to tell you something is dangerous or not, our job is dangerous, if you cant spot a bad situation this early on then you will be dead in your first battle."
08. Reskeme was starting to realize he was in a fight to stay in one piece even while he was training, everything Kellar had taught him had been dangerous. Reskeme asked, "what do I do to make sure the rune will work properly?." Kellar smiled and said," simply channel a very small of mana along with the rune, If the mana doesn't break after you fill the rune you will know immediately if you made the rune correctly. A damaged rune will cause the spell to immediately break apart, a complete rune will lightly glow whatever colour of mana you are currently channelling."
09. Reskeme nervously looked at his new rune, glancing back and forth from his rune to the one Kellar had drawn. His was slightly off, He wasn't sure why but his rune wasn't a perfect copy. Reskeme wasn't feeling well, his mana channels still felt on fire and he wasn't excited about powering the rune. Reskemes mana gauge showed he had a small amount of blue, Kellar had pointed it out when reskeme appeared to be debating on whether or not he should proceed. Reskeme slowly channelled his mana, He immediately felt pain in his veins, Reskeme used a small amount of mana to power the rune that was the size of the tip of his thumb. The rune flared for a moment and held a steady green light.
10. Kellar watched the rune activate and remain active, He said," Took you long enough a basic rune-like that should only take a fraction of that time." Reskeme looked a little bit sheepish and apologized. Kellar passed Reskeme the page for later reference and turned to Reskeme with a huge grin on his face. He said, "now for some fun, Go on channel mana through the rune to start your weapon on fire." Reskeme eyed the rune that was lightly glowing green, He checked his mana gauge making sure he had a little blue. The mana gauge showed only a small amount of blue on the bottom of the small circle, Reskeme channelled his mana causing the remainder of him mana to empty from his gauge before he channelled the last of his mana and pushed it through the rune.
11. A small amount of fire leaked from his rune and slowly wrapped around a thumb-sized portion of the entire blade. The fire looked like the blade had a glowing green ring on it about halfway down the blade. Reskeme came to the realization he needed to draw more runes down the blade. Reskeme Immidatly channelled and drew a tiny rune beside his other one with a small thread of mana.
12. Kellar immediately ran forward with blinding speed and grabbed the handle of the dagger, he pushed reskeme back and threw the dagger hard across the room. Kellar had reacted in time and saved his students' life, The damned genius had just done something that most students had to be drilled and study for weeks to learn. The dagger spun through the air and just as Kellar thought would happen a pop and a whoosh as a ball of fire erupted from the knife bursting to flame in a whomp.
13. Reskeme said, "What the hell was that, did I do it wrong?" In an angry tone, Kellar said," Make sure the next time you add a rune that the first one isn't active or the second rune will break your first spell and cause something terrible in this case deadly." Reskeme knew he wouldn't be harmed by his own fire but Kellar didn't need to know that. Kellar said," Next time you add multiple runes to a weapon don't power the runes until you have all of them on your weapon." Kellar said," you had a good idea, However Runes need to be powered all at the same time or they will tear each other apart."
14. Kellar said," Next time I won't be there to save you, so don't be an idiot and activate any runes on the same weapon without activating others at the same time. " Reskeme smiled and nodded his head, he was exhausted and was a little shaken after Kellar had thrown the knife. Reskeme at least had his flame rune in his pocket on his shirt and was excited to see if he could do runes along his entire blade of his naginata. If Kellar heard his thoughts he would have thought the boy was crazy to channel that much mana into this basic of a metal.
15. Kellar smiled to Reskeme and said," you seem exhausted and you really shouldn't channel any more mana, Stay here in the barracks soo I can keep an eye on you," Kellar said, "If you channel mana I will kick your ass." Reskeme looked at the mage, based on his serious expression Reskeme decided he wasn't lying. Katherine said," don't worry Reskeme I will have a letter ready for you to deliver tomorrow." Reskeme was feeling light-headed and felt chills running down his spine, he was looking forward to the simple task of delivering a message the next day. Reskeme slowly stood and walked towards the exit.
16. Katherine said, "follow me I have an on-duty sergeants single room for you to stay in to recover your strength and mana. Reskeme was nervously eyeing the mage who was eyeing the burned stump in the corner suspiciously. Reskeme dimly noticed the barrier blocking the door was gone. He followed Katherine out of the training yard and into a side room, they passed undecorated walls and doors before arriving at a door that was just as plain as the rest. Reskeme was pleased that at least the garrison was more focused on getting stronger as less on appearance. He opened the door to the room and waved goodbye before closing and locking the door behind him. Reskeme was pleased that the door had a lock, He was sure the mage would check up on him and he really didn't want the man discovering what he had to hide. Reskeme looked over the room, It had a clean small bed slightly raised off the ground with nothing else other than a small chest at the end. Reskeme knew he shouldn't be tired but after channelling so much mana at once he felt like he could sleep for two days.
17. Reskeme leaned his naginata against the wall and stretched a few times before tiredly taking off his boots and climbing into the small bed. He closed his eyes and smiled at his good fortune, A master mage and a weapon master was good for him. His thoughts slowly drifted off and he faintly heard the stomping and clattering of armour from a nearby practice yard, He didn't have time to wonder what the faint stomping and ringing was, He would have been much more nervous for the next day if he knew it was of a squad practicing their march, preparing for the following day.
You can probably all tell what might be coming next Hope you are just as excited as me.
