Bray said he was a con artist and when he came to this town he had no intention of falling in love .  All his ancestors were also con artists so his whole life he knew nothing but conning people.

Falling in love  with Ira was totally unexpected and by the time he realized it was too late .He had come back to atone his sins and Ira told him  it's too late as she was suffering from an incurable disease and going to die within three months.

Bray was heartbroken and for the first time in his life he shed tears . Ira told as the last leaf in the backyard tree falls the autumn season will end and she will leave this world.

Ira daily looked at the tree from her bedroom window and as each leaf fell her health started deteriorating. Not able to see it Bray stick the fake leaves to the tree and surprisingly Ira's health become stable .
