"Alright, lets get them back to the packhouse." Ben said. He tossed casually over his shoulder, "You, Haruka, grab a box or two."
"But I'm a healer wolf." Haruka protested.
Ben stacked three large boxes and lifted them, "So pick the lighter boxes."
He moved towards the door grumbling to the boxes piled up taller than himself, "They sure don't make healers like they used to."
Seriously, Ben was going to grow up to become a grouchy old man one day!
Haruka looked extremely conflicted, "Are you sure we should be doing this?"
Which would have been a good question to ask… like when we were still outside the shed, but I suppose Haruka wasn't expecting this turn of events at all.
"Are you two really exchange students?" Haruka was starting to get suspicious. What kind of exchange students would beeline straight to an abandoned hut, find a stash of preserved books and old digital storage, and immediately start to transport it out?
But like I said, it was too late. I grinned at him, "Didn't your mum every tell you not to follow strangers into the woods?"
Haruka looked really worried now. I tried to calm him down, "Don't worry, we aren't bad guys. We're friends right? Just grab a box and come along."
"That'll make me an accomplice!" The way Haruka said it, it was like we were asking him to rob a bank with us or something.
I shrugged, "No, it'll make you our partner."
"In crime!" Haruka cried out. I laughed. He's so funny. Even if he thought so, shouldn't he keep that to himself? What if we really were bad guys?
{So fun!} Boo had come out to play. Boo always liked to mess with powerful wolves - even innocent healer ones from the future.
Ben made an impatient chuffing sound and proceeded to ignore the other guy's dilemma, "Stop fooling around and get the door Sam."
I quickly grabbed the nearest box and rushed to help Ben with the door… only to realize that if I were carrying a box, I wouldn't be able to open the door. Opps.
"Sam!" Ben complained.
"Okay, okay!" I put the box down. Geesh, what kind of beta yelled at their alpha like that?
"I don't even think we are supposed to be here." Haruka worried. I guess he figured out that we weren't bad guys or anything. Maybe he thought we were delinquents. Haha.
{Wolves approaching.}
I stopped my hand at the door at Boo's warning to sense it. Yeah, there were a few strong wolves heading here very quickly.
Ben misinterpreted my hand paused on the door, "Sam, are you f***ing me?"
Which was pretty much the last straw, I snapped back, "If I were, you would know, Beta."
And then I slapped both hands over my mouth and shook my head, "That was Boo, not me."
Ben's response was to laugh, "Whatever, Alpha. Just get the door."
"Don't. Someone's coming!" Haruka hissed. I guess he sensed the approaching wolves too. He looked around desperately, "Maybe we could hide, or maybe they're just passing by…"
Ben looked to me, "Our wolves or something else?"
"Ours I think…" I tried to sense them again, "They're coming from the packhouse."
"Oh good." Ben put down the boxes, "It'll be faster with more people."
And then he opened the door, I think he saw the warriors in the distance, he yelled, "Hey! You guys! Come over here!"
"Oh… fudge." Haruka said. He looked to me, "Okay, it's okay. Just stay calm."
Was he comforting himself?
"Sam, just stay behind me and let me do the talking, alright?" Haruka said.
Wait, he was comforting me?
"You're gonna help us?" This surprised me, "I thought you didn't want to become our accomplice?"
Haruka looked resigned. When he made that expression, he looked uncannily like Hayao giving a soliloquy.
"I don't know what you two are up to, and it might sound weird to you, but even though it's the first time we've met, my wolf feels somewhat connected to the both of you." Haruka said. He gave a wry smile, "Nothing creepy, just a familiar feeling."
"Maybe we're relatives. It wouldn't be farfetched. I do have relatives here." Haruka postulated. He pointed to Ben, "Come to think of it, Ben's like the exact replica of my cousin."
"Do you mean his looks or his bad attitude?" I asked back.
Haruka laughed, "Both."
"No flirting." Ben came back to us. To me he smirked, "He's too young for you Sam."
Haha. Very funny. I crossed my arms and flared a bit.
"Where are the warriors?" Haruka was more concerned with what he felt was our impending trouble.
"They mindlinked their beta and were told to return to the packhouse." Ben shrugged, "Now we have to wait for their beta to come personally. Damn waste of time."
"Oh. Did they say which Beta?" Haruka asked suddenly hopeful, "Maybe its my cousin. It'll be much easier to explain everything if it's Luc."
I didn't feel so sure. If his cousin was truly the exact replica of Ben, wouldn't things be worse for us, not better?
Too late! The door opened and Ben came in. I mean, it couldn't have been Ben, but he really looked like a taller, broader, grown up version of Ben.
"Oh look, Ben!" I pointed quite without meaning to, "I think I found your descendent."
"Hi, Luc." True to his word, Haruka stepped up in front of me, "Haha, you'd never believe what happened."
Luc crossed his arms, "You met a couple of time travelers and followed them into the woods?"
Haruka opened his mouth, and then shut it again. I don't think that was what he was planning to say at all.
To us, or rather to Ben, Luc was stern, "I'm sure you saw the sign to ring the doorbell. What the hell. The only time traveler who didn't follow instructions and it had to be my descendent."
To which Ben smirked, "You mean your ancestor."
Oh… who knew? Generations after us, and we were still fixing our timeline. Lol.
"I'm Sam!" I announced, "I'm sure you've read all about me in your history books!"
I was that sure. I mean, wasn't I the founder of Moon Bell? Heck, they should dedicate a whole chapter to me! (And the founding of Moon Bell through the uniting of the Green Packlands.)
Luc raised a brow and considered this, "Not that I don't believe you, Alpha, but you're a lot younger than I expected."
I pouted, "That's because I just shifted this year!"
Luc turned his attention to Ben, "And you're Beta Ben then."
So he did read about us! We must be legends or something by now!
If Luc was impressed, he didn't show it. Instead, he nodded towards the boxes, "I guess you're here for this. We've been storing these for ages. Dad said that if you don't show up by the time I retire, I should just burn them."
Ben growled, "Do that, and I won't ever have pups."
Yes Luc, your ancestor was vengeful like that.
Luc just shrugged, "Whatever. The warriors have reported outside. Help me take the boxes out. This shed is out of bounds to them."
Yes Ben, generations down the road, your descendants would have inherited all your attitude problems.
Anyway, we moved the boxes. Actually, just Luc, Haruka, and Ben. Now that Haruka realized that we weren't bad guys or delinquents, just time travelers, he was back to his usual cheerful and helpful self.
When I picked up a box, Haruka took it from me, "Beautiful princesses shouldn't do rough work."
"She's too old for you!" Ben yelled from across the shed where he was getting more boxes.
Haruka and I laughed.
"He's really protective of you." Haruka told me.
Was he? I considered this and shrugged it off, "Ben's my beta… but yeah, I guess he's also like a brother to me, so we watch out for each other."
"No, I mean…" Haruka hesitated.
"What?" I asked.
Haruka shook his head, "It's nothing. Probably hasn't happened yet. You're still really young. Maybe it's better I don't say it."
I don't need to hear something like that from one of Ben's highschool relative from the distant future!
"Say it!" I alpha commanded, flaring hair and all.
"Hahaha." Haruka laughed uncomfortable, "It's nothing serious, just that you're gonna have a lot of lovers."
Wait, what? WHO WROTE THAT IN THE HISTORY BOOKS? O.O WHO? LET ME GO BACK IN TIME AND WRANGLE HIM!
"At least a dozen!" Luc called back cheerily, "But some historians believed it was more than that."
Grrr…the historians must have been descendants of LNC journalists.
"Shut up." Ben snapped. Luc laughed.
"But now that I've met you, I can see how that happened." Haruka confessed, "It's absolutely true, the moment our eyes met, my heart was swayed."
"Stop swaying and carry some boxes." Ben ordered.
Luc shrugged, "Ruka, don't say anymore. It's best not to mess with the past."
Oh really? But it was okay to tell me how many lovers I purportedly had?
And why were you entertaining time-travelers, huh? You even had a receiving room and doorbell!
Sigh, the future was a crazy place… which wasn't surprising given how my life had been playing out. In many ways, it wasn't all that different - nobody was wearing space suits and everything - even the crazies - were strangely normal, but it was also completely different.
Maybe that was what Haruka meant. My wolf just had a familiar feeling… as if I just returned home after a very long time away.
