Chapitre 20: Traitors, Part Four

"..." "..." "No" "Look it's not as bad as you think, and it will allow you to use my abilities."

Alex looked at him, "How would drinking blood help me." Alex took the vile, "Simple, you would become my tether, this allows you to tap into my magic. Only members of the same family can do this." Alex shook his head, "...It'll help Rose?" He nodded, "It will allow you to tap into my magic, including my High detoxification spell."

Alex sighed and uncorked it and held it to his lips and then swallowed the content's. It tasted horrible, like watered down wine with an iron aftertaste. He winced and coughed as it burned going down. Urzen stared at him, "Do you feel normal, any weird feelings." Alex coughed and rubbed his throat, "It burns worse than hard liquor, and… I can't smell anything." He laughed, "That's good, last time I did this it didn't turn out well."

Alex rubbed his chest as he felt something begin to well up inside him. His entire body began to burn. "Burnings normal, that's the magical energy flowing into you. Don't fight it, let it flow." As Alex relaxed the burning soothed into a warm feeling, as if he was drinking a smooth whisky from the bottle without stopping.

After a while the burning had stopped and he felt that his entire body was energized and stout. "That was unpleasant," Alex remarked as Urzen smiled at his success. "They called me a madman for thinking it possible, but even mad men make progress." He pulled out two objects from nowhere and handed them to Alex. "...You will need these. Something tells me you are in for a very long road."

One object was a large bluish green gem and the other was a thick and leather bound journal. Alex took both objects, "What are these." "The notebook is a collection of my entire knowledge of spells, and the other… is a surprise. You could call them a birthday present from me."

It had never crossed his mind, but his birthday was coming up. Alex put the gem in a deep pocket and secured it shut and then flipped through the pages of the book. He stopped on a page randomly and found the spell he was looking for. It surprised him at first, but it was covered up by thankfulness.

The ghostly man smiled warmly but he was interrupted by loud banging, "By order of the guard open up!" They had found him. The door instantly locked as Urzen waved his fingers, "They do know how to ruin things don't they." They began to beat on the door in hopes of breaking it down, but the door held true to its purpose.

Alex looked around for an exit but soon realized he was stuck. Urzen floated over to a torch and pulled it down. The walls clicked like mechanical clockwork before parting in the middle slowly, "This passage will allow you to escape, follow it all the way down. It was truly enjoyable to finally talk with you."

Alex looked at the man's pale figure and for the first time in forever felt accepted by family. "Thank you, grandfather." He then ran though the opening regretting he had so little time. The clicking started again and the wall sealed behind him leaving him in a dark passageway.

Urzen pushed the torch back in its place right before the door was forced open with an explotian. Out of the smoke a man not too dissimilar to himself walked through and looked around. "Well, if it's not my dear son." The man looked at him, "...Who was here?" Urzen narrowed his eyes, "Don't you recognise me, surely you would want to say hello, it's been so long."

The man scowled in disgust, "... If you do not answer me then I have no further questions." Urzen floated around him, "Oh, who would you think is down here." The man growled, "I don't have time for the riddles of the dead." He turned and walked through the busted door with his guards, "What has been done to you?"

The man stopped, but only answered with one word, "Reality." He walked off down the hall followed by his guards. Urzen watched as each torch was snuffed out one by one. Urzen sighed as he looked at the secret passage and sighed, "Something bad's about to happen, and I hope you're ready. I've done my part." He dissipated back to the shadows with a smile on his face.

The passage was dark and narrow, but not impassable. He held a small ball of light in his hands that he created with little effort. After what felt like an age he came to the end of the passage and stood in front of two large stone doors. He struggled to open the door but soon the rays of the early morning sun had pierced the slit and he slipped out.

The sun was just about to peak over the sea as he came out of a stone building in the middle of the city graveyard. The graveyard felt like a bad omen as panic gripped him. He shoved the door back and began running. He wasn't going to let someone be taken away again, he swore that to himself as he ran the spell through his head.

It was easy enough to sneak around the patroles, many of them were actually asleep standing up. It took him only a short run to get back to the door of the hideout. He copied Turner's knock and the man from before opened the door, "It's you, good. Come inside quickly."

Alex didn't like the look on the man's face and he ran around him to Jasmine's room. John was standing outside, "Alex thank the gods you made it, Rose is looking rough." He barged in.

Jasmine was sitting over Rose seemingly unmoved from when he left. Lance was sitting next to her and Roswald was wiping sweat from Roses brow. Jasmine looked over her shoulder and Alex could see a line of blood below her nose, "A-Alex! I-I thought w-we-l-lost you." She fell down and Lance caught her and laid her down away from the bed.

Alex could see the black lines had spread. Lines ran down her arms and up her face, but the ones on her chest were the worst looking ones. Alex followed the instructions labeled in the book and put his index and middle finger on her chest and began to infuse his magic into her.

He was going to have to single out all traces of the magic in her system and cure it little by little. He closed his eyes and allowed himself to see the magic. He could make out the lines and started there. He signed the appropriate sign with his free hand and infused the spell.

John could see the lines begin to disappear from her face, "Alex it's working." Alex's ear began to ring and bleed and he fell to one knee. "Alex!" John took his shoulder, but Alex didn't stop. It wasn't soon until the poison started to overpower and fight him. Blacklines began forming on his lips and eyes as his magic was being sucked out .

"I-Im not going to have enough magic-" Alex gritted his teeth, his grandfather hadn't mentioned this. His whole body began aching, particularly his scars. John placed a hand on his shoulder and began to pour his own magic into Alex, "Just a little bit longer." Lance did the same, "Come on, you aren't going to let a little magic defeat you now."

Alex looked at them and felt their magic flow into him and nodded, "RIght, everything you got." He forced the magic into the poison and it began to diminish. It was taking everything to keep the spell under control, it was much more complex then he was used too.  He felt his blood chill as John fell down next to him, his magic spent.

Lance tightened his grip, "I'm near empty, i'll give you the rest. It's on you now." He felt a wave of magic and Lance fell as well. Alex gritted his teeth as he poured the rest into the spell. He began to see stars as he reached his limit, he was going to fail. He was about to black out when he felt the area around him become enveloped in magic and a man appeared across the room dressed in black.

Alex winced as he felt his magic bottom out and coughed blood. The man looked at him with deep red eyes, "You are nearly at your end, why do you fight fate?" Alex eyed the man, he was not normal. "You are fighting a losing battle, she will die." Alex didn't listen and continued to pour the little magic he had left into Rose. "No… I won't let it happen."

The man kneeled next to him, "Why do you fight fate, it's been written that she died this day. The stars do not lie." Alex gritted his teeth and he swallowed his own blood, "I can't… not again." The man smiled, "So you have chosen then, to fight that thing which controls this world." "Yes, I have too."

"Then I will ask you, will you accept the power I offer?" Alex was out, completely. He looked at the man, this was no place to be making deals with unknown outcomes, but he needed whatever he had. Even if it was his soul, he would save Rose no matter the consequence. Alex nodded and the man cupped his left eye with his hand.

"That is the contract, may you find that which you seek." Alex felt a huge flow of magic invade his body and it was all he could do to keep from yelling in pain. The man disappeared and he flowed the magic into Rose and with that single push a redlight flooded the room and the poison was eradicated.

Alex released the magic and breathed heavily while inspecting Rose, the lines were gone. She was safe. Alex took her hand as the stress faded and his worry cleared. Rose opened her deep brown eyes and looked around before settling on him, "Al… Alex."

He had already passed out before she could say anything else.
