Aaron summoned a gust of wind and blew an entire row of soldiers off the mountainside. He raced towards the opening, his sword flashing, and I followed closely behind. More soldiers replaced those that fell, while archers stood in the distance and shot volleys of arrows at us. Aaron often swept them away with gusts of wind, but he couldn't depend on his powers forever.
"New orders from Lord Victor!" A messenger rushed towards the group of soldiers, shouting. "If you can't capture the two chosen ones, kill them! Let them escape, and all of you will face Lord Victor's wrath!"
"That's not good," Aaron muttered under his breath as he sent several other soldiers flailing off the side of the mountain. "Kath, I'll clear the way for an opening, and then we're going to make a run for it, okay?"
"I got your back. Go for it." I replied, swinging my swords to slash at any soldiers nearby. With a shout, Aaron blasted the charging soldiers back, leaving a gap in the circle of soldiers that were beginning to surround us.
"Let's go!" Aaron charged out, sending gusts of wind to prevent anyone from stopping us. I followed behind, decapitating any quick-footed soldiers that managed to catch up to us.
The soldiers didn't give up this time. With orders from Lord Victor to either catch us or face Lord Victor, they put forth every effort into the chase. Arrows whizzed by us, sinking into the ground and bouncing off of rocks. Aaron maintained a windy front behind us so that the arrows wouldn't hit us, but he couldn't concentrate fully while running for his life. Soon, arrows were piercing through our wind shield.
The mountain path suddenly wound around a corner. I sped ahead with a burst of energy, telling myself that I'll be able to use the corner as a temporary shield against the arrows behind us. Aaron lagged behind a few steps, turning to use his wind powers to blast anyone close to us off the mountain.
Just as I made it around the corner safely, I heard Aaron's pained shout behind me. "Argh!"
I spun around in time to see him fall back, an arrow protruding from his chest. "No! Aaron!"
"I'm fine! Just leave me, Kath, and keep running! I'll delay them!" Despite the blood already trickling from the wound, Aaron struggled to crawl back up to his feet, his sword still in his hand.
"No way. We're in this together!" I rushed to his aid, pulling him to his feet and letting him lean on me for support. Thankfully, the arrow had missed all vital organs and pierced through Aaron's right pectoral muscle instead. "There are only two of us left. We either live together or die together!"
The soldiers came closer, but less hurriedly after seeing that Aaron was wounded. They formed an arc and tried to surround us again, but I didn't let them surround us on all four sides. Aaron was able to stand by himself, but his right arm was now rendered almost useless. Whenever he moved his arm, the arrow wound would hurt, and more blood would trickle out. He stuck his sword back in its scabbard and resorted to using his wind powers instead.
As the soldiers advanced and tried to push us against the rocky mountain wall, Aaron and I backed away and tried our best to keep moving down the mountain path. We needed to run, but I wasn't sure if we could anymore. Not only were we tired from all the running before, but Aaron was now wounded. But I refused to give up. I will not be captured and taken back to Lord Victor, where a fate worse than death awaited us. I will not allow Aaron and myself to fall back into the hands of Lord Victor.
"Do you think we can make a run for it?" Aaron asked quietly. I eyed the group of soldiers in front of us who were still advancing.
"If we can push them back momentarily, yes," I replied. "Can you use your wind power to blow them back?"
"I can try, but we'll need to get a bit closer. Why don't we charge at them and take them by surprise? It'll be that last thing they expect we'd do." Aaron suggested.
I nodded. "Alright. On the count of three—one, two, three!"
Brandishing my swords, I sprinted towards the approaching soldiers, who halted in surprise. Before they could react, I knocked several of their comrades down and wounded a few others. Aaron was right behind me, his arms stretched out and summoning the wind.
A gale answered his call and swept down on the soldiers. It was the strongest wind I'd ever felt Aaron create. Before us, the soldiers were blasted back and fell into heaps on top of each other. Unfortunately, since Aaron was behind me, the wind caught me too. I felt myself being lifted up from the ground against my will and thrown in the direction of the fallen soldiers.
"Aaron! Stop!" I shouted, flailing my arms. His eyes widened, and he stopped the wind, dropping me onto the floor in the midst of the soldiers. Some were quick to jump to their feet, grab their weapons, and lunge at me. I swung my swords, keeping them at bay while trying to fight a way out.
More and more soldiers stood up, brushed the dirt from their clothes, and picked up their scattered weapons. I couldn't fight all of them at once. Spying an opening between two soldiers, I slashed at the people in front of me and darted towards the gap.
But what I didn't see was that there were several other soldiers behind those two, who just happened to stand up right when I tried to run through. Their swords and spears stabbed out, aimed straight at me. With a painful cry, I felt a slash on my left arm and another on my abdomen, right on my unhealed wound. Other cuts followed, and the pain stacked up on each another. I stumbled, lashing out blindly as the weapons came down on me.
"Kath!" I heard Aaron shout. But he was too far away.
Bad news everyone: I'm getting extremely busy so I'm afraid I have to change the upload schedule to every other day. My sincerest apologies T.T
