"Hey, you. You're finally awake."
"You were trying to cross the border of minds. Right?"
"Walked right into that memory fragment. Same as me."
'????'
Adam heard a voice as he woke up. It was talking about the experience he just went through.
'What the hell?'
"We're all brothers and sisters in the world."
The voice rang in his head but he didn't know where it came from. He looked around himself and saw that everyone around him was sound asleep.
'Brian, Lilith, Mom, Dad, and ...'
Adam looked at Eve, who was sleeping by his bedside together with Lilith.
'What was her name again?'
Her name slipped his mind. He was still groggy from the dreamscape that he just woke up from.
"Remember to reach out. We are here for you."
The voice spoke once more.
'Again. Where is that voice coming from.'
Adam looked around once more. He had experienced this before but he just could not remember. It was when he was just born, a voice celebrated his birth and gave him Gaia Essence.
Adam looked at the only entity that was looking at him. It was Talyn, his albino marten.
'Talyn?'
Talyn's eyes were glowing in a dull blue light. This was a familiar scene for Adam who experienced the blue light a couple of times.
"What do you mean?" Adam asked. He wasn't sure whether to ask Talyn but she was the only conscious entity in the vicinity.
Talyn continued looking at Adam without moving. Her glowing eyes grew dimmer and dimmer but she still hasn't said anything. She closed her eyes and rested her head on Adam's chest.
Adam felt dejected that the voice never replied. The silence signified that he had to find the way by himself. The problem was that Adam did not know what to work with.
'I guess I'll have to work harder now. Huh.'
Adam caressed Talyn's fur. It was soft and silky as she was groomed very frequently.
'It's a good thing Talyn did not awaken her instincts as a marten.'
Martens are arboreal creatures. They liked being in highly elevated places. Martens are nocturnal and had rabies.
Talyn was a domesticated marten. She was vaccinated to prevent rabies and never interacted with any other marten either. Therefore, she grew up just like a housecat.
'7 years.'
Adam continued stroking her fur. He was feeling the consequences of time, but not on himself. He was attached to his marten, which already expended more than half of her lifespan.
'Well. What do I do now?'
Adam knew that he woke up in the middle of the night. It was evident as everyone was asleep within the room. He wanted to get up from his bed but his marten was sleeping soundly on top of his chest.
'I can't move.'
So Adam, who wanted to stretch his body, just lied down while being absolutely still. To his mistake, Talyn was awake. She was just feeling good about the head pats and strokes so she kept her eyes closed.
After a few hours, Adam had to move. He was feeling the effect of metabolism. He needed to poop and piss. He also needed to drink some water.
'Sorry, Talyn.'
He stood up and placed Talyn softly on the bed. She opened her eyes and looked at Adam.
'Ah. She woke up.'
Talyn looked at Adam with her silver eyes before closing them again.
Adam relieved himself in a comfort room without making a disturbance. He didn't want to wake anyone up because he knew that everyone was tired.
As soon as he finished his business, Adam walked outside of his patient room. He wanted to see the extent of the Folinr's raid and the amount of damage they dealt.
While he was walking towards the first hole, he was feeling weird. He could not find any traces of battle at all. The floor he was walking on was clean, there were no damages and everything was in order.
'Something is not right.'
When he reached the first hole, what he saw was not a covered wall. What he saw was a massive excavation. The cavern where he almost died was now just a giant hole that was in development. There were handy robots that did almost all of the work and the men were just managing the bots.
'Grandpa made proper use of the raid.'
He was surprised because of the sudden change. He remembered that this was the common area, where he interacted with people his age. However, it was currently a construction site and Adam felt weird about that.
'How long was I out? It should have only been a few days right?'
He was speculating. He could understand why the construction was already at this stage because the bots were very efficient. However, what Adam did not know was that the construction of the common area was delayed.
Everything else was a priority. The lodgings, the cafeteria, and especially the garden which was the source of oxygen within the Vault.
Adam walked towards the garden. He didn't want fresh air, he just wanted to relax and see some greenery for a bit. He was feeling iffy, he wanted to get rid of the uncertainty but his mind plagues with it.
"Whew."
Once Adam arrived at the garden, he took a seat under a tree that had branches cut off. They were removed because of the damage the branches suffered.
Adam began contemplating. He couldn't get his mind off the dream he just had. It was a surreal dream, with the events within the dream being a place he was familiar with.
'And that carving. I wonder what that meant.'
He thought about the carving. He remembered from the distant past, there were several carvings on the tree of knowledge. They existed before Adam was created.
'Wait.'
"Status!"

'!?'
Adam found a few different things about his status.
'Gift Lv 4?'
His Gift was the ability to devour. He didn't know how to properly activate his Gift but it was now level 4, and that fact baffled Adam very much.
'What the hell happened?'
As he was confused about the changes of his Gift that he never knew how to activate, he continued reading through his status.
'I can understand why the ears are now assimilated.'
He knew the exact moment when his ears evolved. It was when he ate a portion of the Folinr's leader's body. During that time, he did not have the chance to check the upgrade so now was the best time for him.
Adam's ears did not morph. However, his hearing still improved. He activated the power of his ears but it did not change its appearance. But that was not the main point of the upgrade.
'Ugh'
Adam's head was filled with sound. He was not used to the volume that his new ears could detect. The unfamiliarity hurt Adam temporarily but it was not a matter to be scared of.
"Better turn it off for now." Adam said to himself softly.
Adam heard his voice and it felt like he was shouting directly into his own ears. After toggling his ears back to normal, he was relieved that the sound no longer drowned him out.
'What's next? The Observer of Chronicles?'
This was a title that he achieved from observing the distant pasts from a Folinr's memory. Adam did not know about the meaning of observing the memory and was still baffled.
'I wonder. Is it the dream?'
Adam was not aware that he was browsing a memory instead of dreaming. It was the reason why he couldn't do what he intended at the last moment. The past was already set in stone, he could not change anything.
'Lastly, memory 20% + ??. What the hell is even that?'
Adam took his sweet time thinking but he couldn't make heads or tails about his memory's situation. Without any result, Adam decided to walk back to his room.
'Now that I think about it. I'm not hungry at all. It should have been a few days since I last ate.'
He was also not aware that he ate several Folinr. His body was no longer controlled by himself at that point but by something else. It was an entity that was different from Adam. It was vile and cruel.
'Oh! I'm not supposed to be here.'
Unknowingly, Adam forgot that he wasn't supposed to go back to his room but to his patient's room.
Once he arrived in the room he was unconscious in, he opened the door. To his surprise, he saw two sets of eyes staring directly at him. He had to look down first though. The small person he saw hugged him soon after.
"Hmmm?"
"Adam!"
Eve's voice echoed within the room, waking everyone up.
"Did I miss something?"
Adam said with confusion.
