I couldn't believe it. I'd been such an idiot. I dove for where I'd last seen Alice, the darkness swallowing everything. I crashed into someone, heard her grunt in protest, knew it was her, carried her to the ground.

"Fee, stop!" She struggled. "Get off me!"

No way was I letting her up. "Why? Why did you kill them, Alice?"

I can only imagine how ridiculous I looked, crouching over the young woman, her glasses askew from my tackle, when the lights came back on. Except, of course, no one was laughing because the figure in the doorway holding the gun on us kind of killed the humor of the moment.

"She didn't," Amos said, voice quiet and tired. "I did."

Wait, what? Alice pushed me off slowly and we both rose, though the gun followed our movements, Emelia rising to stand between us. I was now two people from my phone and in a whole lot of trouble.
