An ebony wand is any wand that is crafted out of wood from an ebony tree. More specifically, an ebony wand is any wand that has an ebony shaft, an ebony handle, or both.

Ebony Trees

Ebony trees, which belong to the genus Diospyros, are characterized by their very dark brown to jet black wood. In addition to its unusual color, ebony has been prized since ancient times for its extreme hardness and density (ebony wood will sink in water).

Numerous ebony species are broadly distributed in warm tropic rainforests, primarily in eastern Africa, India, Ceylon, and Indonesia. Two species of ebony are used in wand making:
