Chapitre 12: Hotel Security

The rest of the security consultation and the bulletproof glass consultation went fairly well. The security system would be ready to install in two days but the glass wouldn't be ready for a week because they would have to have the right dimensions to redo all the windows in the house plus the sliding glass door that led into the backyard.

Six was in for some more sleepless nights. The hitmen who were sent yesterday had surely been noticed as missing by now. Reinforcements would likely be here in the next day or two.

They would probably send greater numbers this time. He had to be sure to carry multiple different types of weapons at all times.

He did manage to snag a standard-issue utility belt that was capable of holding every weapon an agent could conceivably use outside of a too-large sniper rifle. If he wore it under his hoodie it should be fine.

This one was a zip up rather than a pullover so it would be faster to get in and out of when necessary. And it would be necessary.

The big brass didn't give up on hit requests. The Agency was the best on the east coast with a near-perfect track record. They would keep coming after Claire until she was dead.

Six had no doubt they wanted him dead too at this point for daring to defy them. Being an agent was risky business but someone killing so many of his own within a single organization was unprecedented.

He had broken the code for a total stranger. Even he couldn't justify his actions. But what was done was done; he had devoted himself to keeping Claire safe until he understood her life and was able to forge one of his own.

He truly had been wasting away with boredom back at headquarters. Getting out permanently seemed preferable to accepting retraining at this point.

"I think we need to stay somewhere more secure for the time being," Six said grimly. "I really can't condone staying here until the bulletproof glass is ready to be installed. We can come back for the security system installation but I would feel more at ease if we went somewhere else to sleep."

Claire sighed. "I thought you might say something like that so I already booked an Air BnB. It won't be available until tomorrow though. Can you manage here tonight?"

She was surprisingly proactive. Perhaps she valued her life more than her carelessness let on.

Six was reluctant because there was a good chance they would try and strike tonight. "There has to be somewhere we can go tonight that doesn't require any advance notice."

"No advance notice and accepts pets? Because I'm not leaving Daisy behind at the mercy of killers," Claire replied firmly. "I'm not going unless she goes too; she's all the family I have left."

He might not understand the concept of family but it was fairly obvious that she was attached to her cat. They were rarely separated when at home. He could tell that she would dig her heels in about this.

"Keep looking then," Six said reluctantly. "But if you can't find anything, I'm going to force you to come with me anyway."

Claire scowled at him and continued her search. Eventually she found a place that did allow cats and had a room available but it was more expensive than she had hoped with an additional pet fee. She said it should be fine since it was only for one night.

She seemed stressed about it again. All of the upgrades to her house would be expensive and she hadn't gone to work today.

Six did his best to reassure her even though that was far from his strong suit. "This was my idea; I'll pay for it."

"Really?" Claire asked, surprised.

He nodded. "Yes. Go pack everything you will need for the next week. We should head there immediately before the agents have a chance to regroup."

Hotel security was supposed to be pretty good. All he would have to guard against was one window and a door as opposed to the many windows and doors in this house. He wasn't positive of anyone in the Agency's hacking abilities but there was a chance their credit or debit cards could be tracked.

You couldn't reserve a hotel room without one so their hands were tied. Six really wished he had more than one alias now. One nobody else knew about. The problem was that he would need to find the right guy to do it for him and there was no guarantee they wouldn't report it back to the Agency anyway.

Maybe if he went to a different city…they were primarily based out of Boston though they did take requests throughout the east coast. The agents couldn't have eyes on every single forger on the east coast; that was unrealistic.

If he could find one that wasn't affiliated with them, he could create multiple burner aliases. That would be helpful for life on the run.

Six didn't have a name so what did it matter if his fake one kept changing? All that really mattered was staying alive. Kill or be killed. That was an agent's creed.

About an hour later, the three of them (if you counted the cat) loaded up into the car and headed to the hotel. They ordered room service for dinner and streamed a movie on the room's TV.

Claire seemed exhausted and took a long bath before going to bed early, saying she had work in the morning. Six told her to wake him up before she left so he could escort her and be sure there wouldn't be any trouble.

He was fairly confident no one would dare strike during the daytime when the pharmacy was full of employees. That wasn't their MO. As long as he was there to escort her to and from work they should be fine. For now.

Six sighed and leaned back against the pillows. It had been days since he slept in a real bed. This was nice. The mattress here was a lot better than the one back at headquarters too. He could get used to cushy life on the outside as long as people stopped trying to kill him.
