Chapitre 46: A Young Master's Inevitable Life

After turning five years old, it became apparent that Carlos was beginning to develop slower than his peers.

He couldn't take in new vocabulary as well as other kids. His logical skills were lacking.

In truth, from the start, his prowess had been overestimated. The only things that Carlos did to receive the title "genius" were crawling and speaking at a younger age than other children.

But these things weren't special. Every toddler knew how to crawl, which one didn't?

As for the speaking part, Carlos had been placed into so many speech and pronunciation classes as a young child that it would instead seem weird if he didn't know how to talk.

And so it came off as a huge disappointment to the common folk. The Rochester family had always been known for their almost noble lineage. They had birthed multiple brilliant military generals, politicians, and businessmen. To think that the sole heir of the family to be a normal person, without any outstanding specialties!

Everyone had secretly come to the conclusion that the Rochester name would be blemished, or the prestige would at least dip, with Carlos as the future master.

Mind you, all of these speculations and judgments arrived at Carlos' front door when he was under 10 years of age.

No one thought about the fact that that the child was still young, and his future could still be easily molded.

Nor did anyone think about how their malicious thoughts would affect the young child.

It wasn't as if the Rochester family was oblivious to the whispers that occurred around them. But they couldn't do anything about it. There weren't any actual people that publicly slandered the young master; who had the courage?

His father had just told the entire family to ignore the whispers. But Carlos could never completely shut them out.

He was only 6. What did he do to deserve such insults?

Even though he rarely showed such negative thoughts on his face, he had begun to harbor that wish where he wanted to be reborn as a normal person.

However, as a master of reading emotions, his father noticed with a start that there was something wrong with Carlos.

He immediately stopped almost all of his son's extracurricular activities and cut him off from the outside world.

The only place that Carlos went to besides his home was his school, a place that Mr. Rochester made sure didn't have a speck of profanity.

Over the two years that he was shut in, the child had recovered completely from his childhood traumas and had become a bubbly, adorable child.

Because he was so sheltered, Carlos never learned how to hide his thoughts and emotions. Though it improved his mental health, this also made him terribly naïve and, to be frank, stupid.

It was only recently that the young master of the Rochester family had been released, out of concern for his future in the outside world.

It had come to Mr. Rochester's attention that his son's intellectual ability was growing much slower than his peers of the same age.

The situation wasn't the same when Carlos was still a toddler; that was still all right. But now, the slow growth was alarming.

Psychologists had told him that as of now, there have been no specific cognitive disabilities spotted within the child. They suggested Mr. Rochester to expose his son to the outside world a bit more, to give him more colorful experiences and make contact with more people.

But one of the first steps that the father took to expose his child to the outside world seemed to have utterly failed.

"I want to be born as a person that is not the heir of the Rochester family," Carlos whispered again.

Looking at her master's expression, Fei knew that she had stepped onto a landmine once again.

She needed to think fast and change the topic again!

"It is almost Thanksgiving. There are just two more days left," she blurted out.

Carlos looked at his bodyguard, clearly confused. "What?" Thanksgiving?

"Thanksgiving began as a day of giving thanks and sacrifice for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year almost a thousand years ago." Fei looked at her master. "Is there anything that you are thankful for, Master?"

The child widened his eyes. He has never heard of such a day or event. This day originated almost 1000 years ago? T-That's really ancient!

But "blessing of the harvest", what is that? Why do we need to be thankful? He vocalized his doubts.

"Harvest as a noun means the time of year when crops are ripe and ready to be gathered. Harvesting is the process of gathering a ripe crop from the fields. The completion of harvesting marks the end of the growing season, or the growing cycle for a particular crop, and the social importance of this event makes it the focus of seasonal celebrations such as harvest festivals, found in many religions."

"O-Okay, stop. Stop! I get it…" Carlos scratched his head. "Um… What was your other question again? Something about being thankful?"

Fei nodded. "Is there anything that you are thankful for, Master?"

Her master drooped his head down in thought. Thankful, huh? "Fei, what are you thankful for?"

He looked up to see her reaction.

"I am thankful for having the opportunity to be your bodyguard and having you as my master," the loyal bodyguard said unhesitantly. It was almost as if she had been waiting to hear that question, and had especially prepared an answer beforehand.

Carlos' face flushed, and he opened his mouth but couldn't manage to say a thing, facing Fei's expectant stare.

Finally, he said in a hushed whisper, "Thank you. I'm thankful for having you as my bodyguard and my friend too, Fei." He fidgeted, with his fingers twirling a lock of golden hair.

The mutant who was intently observing his every move beamed, pleased at herself for successfully comforting her master.

Suddenly, Carlos lunged at Fei and threw his arms around her waist.

Damnit, he thought to himself. Why am I so short?

His arms could not reach her shoulders.

However, he soon immersed himself in the hug.

Fei is warmer than I thought she would be.

The child smiled.
