The freezing atmosphere had made it extremely hard to get up from the soft bed where Joy had been sleeping. Her grandmother had changed her sheets while she was away- Josephine had taken away her green linens and replaced it with soft pink ones. She had also replaced the curtains in her room and cleaned her precious books. Joy's room was too cozy that she doesn't want to leave. But she knows that she can't stay because she needs to go to school and wait for missions.
"Oh no-"
Joy was suddenly reminded of her unfinished mission and that made her subconsciously get up from her bed and look at her necklace. The hands of the clock was still nowhere to be found- and that implies that she have no mission for today. She sighed in relief and held the necklace dear to her- near her heart. She stood up and prepared to go to school - then went down to eat her breakfast. As usual, a warm smile had greeted her- and Ray was also awake and ran towards her.
"Good mowning!" Ray's tone was that of a kid because he was born and destined to have special needs. This made Joy restless and made her dream to become a special education teacher to help people like her brother. She caressed Ray's hair and looked at his silver eyes- they are so innocent and pure- but how can this innocence and pureness last for a life time? '
' Why does he have to suffer like this? Why does he have to be like this? My little brother is suffering. Everyday is an obstacle to him. People often looked at him like there is something wrong with him - and clearly, that is obvious, but do they have to smash it in our faces?' Joy thought to herself.
"You are choking him." Her grandmother had spoken and her voice seemed to have woken her up. She had been hugging her brother very tightly- like he was going to go somewhere. Joy looked up to her grandmother who was smiling so hard but tears started to stream down her cheeks. Josephine hurried and erased them. She gave her a warm smile and hugged the both of them- Joy and Ray- with so much love that made Joy cry even more. "You should eat now. You are going to be late."
"Na.. Nana? Wem cam I go to s-schoow?" Ray asked with sad eyes. Joy and Josephine looked at each other- they both knew why he don't go to school- it's because of the damn bullies that physically harmed her brother. Ray can't be mixed into the special class because there are more serious cases than him- he is just a late bloomer with an IQ for a kid- even the teachers had suggested to mix him into the normal classes. However, the kids there had been terrible. Ray never went home without bruises or ink on his arms or face- and the worst is the bruise on his eyes- the kids never understood the notion of different. They are worse than animals. They don't have a heart - and a sense of humanity.
Josephine approached him and sang a sweet lullaby that echoed on their hearts. Since Joy was a kid, she had already been singing that and it became the anthem of her entirety. Calmness had brushed through her spirit as Josephine hummed and comforted them. Ray wasn't so sad anymore because Josephine cradled him like a treasure. It was true that they had Josephine treat them like hopes- she was named Hope Joy by her grandmother- and Jin Ray- a ray of sunshine.
"Hey you should eat up now. Or do you want me to spoon-feed you?" Josephine said as she wiped her tears away. Joy was also crying but she stopped because as the embodiment of hope for her beloved grandmother, she can't show sadness. Sometimes, people really have to sacrifice to make the people they love happy as can be. She ate up and finished quickly and when she was about to clean her dishes, Josephine shooed her away because she didn't want her to be late. Joy went back to her room and took her bag and left after kissing her brother and grandma. Light had already been waiting on their gate with his thick jacket- but without a scarf. Joy had figured this one out and took out a black scarf from her bag. She had been knitting it for about a week now because she knew that Light does not have any.
"Why are you giving this to me?" Light asked without looking. Joy wasn't looking at him as well because of embarrassment but if she looked, she'd see Light blushing. Light finally looked at the black scarf but he was surprised to see Cammy's head pop out from it- he nearly smashed it down. Joy wasn't looking and did not notice it, but when Light took it, a wide smile had taken over her face.
"Th-thank you." Light said and looked away as he wore it. Joy looked at him and she felt her face become hot because Light really looked cool with the scarf he was wearing.
"Come on, we're going to be late!" Cammy said, as if he was going to have a counted attendance even if he came. Joy still don't know why Cammy faded yesterday, but she seemed to not think about it anymore because Cammy is fine now.
"Joy! Light!" A voice from the back clamored on their ears. They both looked back and saw Nathan on his bike. He paddled fast and went to them. "Good morning!"
Joy smiled at him and greeted him too. Light also greeted him but he did not smile. He was really cold towards everyone.
"Good morning Nathan!" Cammy shouted. Joy and Light stopped walking but Nathan felt chills on his back where Cammy was. Cammy just let them do their thing and went to the gate. He went in line like he usually does, but he realized that he was already gone from this world and went to them again.
"Oh," Nathan said suddenly. "That Nick had me defeated yesterday. You too Light, you have defeated me."
"Oh, that. Yeah." Light said.
"Don't worry, it's just one mistake. We're tied at number 2." Joy smiled at him and that made him blush so hard that Joy thought he was losing his sanity because of the coldness.
Joy looked at Light and wondered how one person could be so wonderfully beautiful- his eyes were glowing and his silver hair was swaying with the wind. His face is pointed and his lips were thin and naturally pink. Light looked at her and smiled- as Joy tried so hard not to jump for joy. However, the moment was interrupted because their necklaces glowed at the same time, and when they looked at it, they saw Fallon. Light and Joy looked at each other and gave worried signs. It must have been the result of the test yesterday when she tied up with Joy and the others. They all knew how much Fallon wanted to become number 1 but Nick and Light took the cake all by themselves and marked the commoners without a single mistake. However, the bell rang and they all ran towards the school where the students gathered for the flag-raising ceremony. Nick and Mari were already there, waving at them. Fallon was there too but her presence really gave an awful aura because her sadness could be felt by anyone who tries to look at her.
"Why were you late?" Nick asked. He looked happy with his red scarf hanging around his neck. "How do I look?"
"You look like yourself." Light said and hurried towards the line. Nick just glared at him, but they weren't fighting because they are used to each other being hot and cold. They probably treat each other as siblings but refuse to admit it because of their pride.
" Nice scarf! It looks good on you!" Joy said and Nick smiled so wide because someone had given it to him.
"It's from Mari. That sweet woman of mine!" Nick said and looked at Mari who looked super embarrassed.
"Oh, that reminds me." Joy took out a huge orange plastic from her bag. It contained soft things. "Here. Your favorite color, yellow." Joy told Mari and handed her the knitted scarf. She took out an aquamarine scarf and gave it to Nathan who blushed terribly. "It's your favorite color." she took another one - a black and white one and gave it to Nick. He was delighted but she looked at Joy apologetically.
"This is amazing Hope but my Mark's creation was-"
"Come on, I know that, right Mari?" Joy told Mari who was putting in her yellow scarf. She loved the texture of it and hugged the hanging parts of it.
"Y-yeah." Mari said and looked at Light who seemed disappointed. "What's wrong?"
"N-nothing." Light said. He was disappointed because he thought that he was the only one who got a scarf from Joy, but he was mistaken. He didn't understand why he was feeling down when he should be thankful. He took the scarf off because he felt like sulking but he saw a beautiful and intricate embroidery of the sun and moon at the edge of the scarf. It reminded him of Joy and himself- with their eyes that looked like the heavenly bodies- meant to be away.
Fallon looked at Light. She had been hiding something at the bag too because she was late but the scarf that hanged into his neck made him happy and she thought that it was pointless now if she gave it to him. Fallon did not notice that Light was also looking at her- wondering why she seemed down. She just paid attention to the ceremony and left afterwards.
"Light.. What do I do?" Joy asked him. "She hates me."
"She hates everyone." Light replied as his gaze followed Fallon.
"Have another mission again?" Nick asked from the back. Nathan was beside him and they both looked serious.
"Am I dreaming or what- these guys look serious for one." Cammy said and studied them. "I should get going to my chair."
"Just tell us if we can be of help, okay?" Nathan said and tapped their shoulders as they headed onto their classroom.
Having many people help them in their mission is indeed reassuring, but the dangers that might come with it was scary that even thinking about it caused Light to slightly tremble. Cammy had not faded even once in his memory and that assured him but he can't let his guard down because Cammy acts like a living being.
