For those soldiers who came into the Southwestern Ocean, this was their first time here, so most of them felt fear of the unknown, and this made them easy prey for the blobfish. 

And over the next few days, despite being more careful, many more soldiers died as they got deeper and deeper into the Southwestern Ocean. The closer they got to the deepest part of the ocean, the more terrifying the creatures that they had to face.
