While thinking about it she became dazed and Wen Delun poked her head to snap out of it. "Stop dreaming with open eyes and concentrate on lessons."
Shu Ya pouted. "I don't know much about our country laws. Tell me, what is the point of me learning it if I can't use it?"
Looking at his perplexed expression the things in this country might not be as bad as from her storybooks. "Please tell me if there is..."
He realized she really didn't know. "Your mother herself was famous healer, we have two female ministers in government and three female generals in the army. It is not like olden times where women had no chance. Your father is weird. Does he belong to those stupid people that take females as useless beings?"
He could see her pressed lips and knew that he hit the truth. "Wah... no wonder you are so dead set to live away from everyone. Just that you know, not everyone is like Kang and Bai family. Our Emperor has a great mind and his children are amazing as well. He married only his Empress and has three kids with her. A son and two daughters."
She could see a huge smile on his face as he spoke. "But because that, he changed his laws. Any of them can become the next ruler. Even his daughters. Only in their case, their husbands have to give up their family name and have to marry into his family. Like that there won't be troublesome people and situations. Changing the law he made sure that females can join schools and army as well."
Shu Ya had many questions but she chose a simple one. "Did something change since then?"
Wen Delun smiled brightly. "Of course. Our new Emperor became the son as the girls gave up. They found the pressure too bothersome. But the law is still there. So just in case, new Emperor has only daughters they can still inherit the throne."
Shu Ya nodded. "Actually, that law is not bad as his bloodline would directly continue. There will be fewer problems as well. But tell me, he has no concubines. My father..."
Wen Delun rolled his eyes. "Problem is that it's not forbidden. But its looked down upon people that still do that. Lower nobles, some wealthy people and such, do such stuff. But, higher nobility doesn't do that anymore."
"Oh..." So that man just did that what no normal person in higher nobility would do.
The truth to be told, she could see even in Bai family that they all had just one wife and no side women. Maybe this world is not that bad. But how can she be sure that the man she marries won't take other women? She was already cheated once, to live like that again, she is unwilling.
"I am learning for my own sake. The country should be taken care of by the Emperor and his ministers. I'll just learn as I hate being used by corrupt officials. Can you maybe find me law books, healing books and anything that is connected to those two things? I know you have your own goals and you won't be able to stay by my side for too long. But if I get books, I think its enough as well." Shu Ya wanted actually to use him to teach her close servants how to read and write. At least some basic things.
Wen Delun sighed. He really must leave in spring so he accepted her request. "I have friends in the city. I'll ask them to copy all needed books for you. I'll teach you some harder signs that are not used often. But first, you will write all signs you already know. Like that, I will know where to start."
When Mingli entered the room he saw a bunch of papers filled with rows and rows of signs while she wrote more and more.
Wen Delun stated at the signs with amazement. "Such clean lines, such a soft touch..."
Shu Ya smiled. When she attended the school her favourite thing was to learn as much as she could. Calligraphy was her favourite on end.
Even tho she was not good in school, but some things were still interesting. Unfortunately, her past life was...
She snapped out daze and concentrated in writing all the signs she learned and knew. But after while her arm started hurting. She looked at Wen Delun with a pout. "I'll write further later. My arm hurts."
Wen Delun just nodded and picked up the papers that were everywhere. "These, I will look trough. I never saw any woman writing so vigorously but at the same time so elegant. You can continue tomorrow."
Shu Ya remembered that she will get guests the next day she sighed. "I'll just write more when I feel like. That is already five hundred signs. I know around five thousand."
He stated at her with open mouth while she shook her hand. "F...five thousand?"
Shu Ya let Louli massage her hand while smiling. "I know it's not enough, but I was interested in calligraphy since was a very little child. And I'm kind of smart and valuable." She smiled brightly at him but he just dazedly looked at the written papers.
He just took papers and with a wave of hand left while Shu Ya shook her head. Her mouth is faster than her brain. How could she tell him she knew that much.
She should have said one thousand or two... But she suddenly felt proud and wanted to boast about it. At least once she wanted to be proud of herself.
Hualing nodded. ''Of course, is our miss smart and valuable. What child can hold with her tiny hands such big household, outside servants, people that will be seasonal workers as well and still not break? When I think about it I get dizzy. Nobility is something really you are born with.''
Shu Ya rolled her eyes. ''Nobility has nothing do with it. Even if I was born penniless I would have been able to earn money to survive just as good. Hualing, your boys are smart. If they learn well I will open restaurants for them and then they can become rich and important people. Then you can finally become a lazy woman and rest.''
Hualing shook her head. ''Miss, what should I do alone at home? When I am around you I always learn more things. And if I live alone I'd have to cook by myself. Sigh.''
Wen Delun started laughing. ''Boys are in a good age to get married. Once you have three more people helping you and grandchildren around your feet, wouldn't that be fine?''
Hualing froze as she realized his words. She completely forgot that point...
