Chapitre 13: A Girl Who Volunteered

There once was a young woman, who cared for the sick and elderly. Her name was Elisabeth. She was kind and gentle but, sometime she could become very strict. At the edge of the forest, there was a palace, inside lived the lord of the land. He was known as a kind ruler and very generous. One day a pandemic hit the land, Elisabeth was one of the first people to help others get better. By the end, she was tending to fifty people on her own. Fifty out of the sixty five people in the town, made it thanks to Elisabeth's help.

A week after a massager came to town. "Our lord has become increasingly ill! If this continues, our lord will die without an heir! He wishes any young woman with medical training to go to his palace; where he will choose one to tend to him!" The massager announced. Many people told Elisabeth to go. Not only because she save fifty of them, but because she doesn't put up thing. After a few days, Elisabeth went to the lord. She knows nothing about him, not even his age. Elisabeth was escorted to the lord, who was pale a very fragile.

The guard helped him sit up. He was no more than thirty, maybe younger. "Are you the new nurse?" The lord asked weakly. "Then, what will you want as payment?" Elisabeth smiled, "My lord, your heath is all I ask. If you must pay me, then give me your table scrapes while I'm here." Hearing her gentle voice relaxed the lord. "You can start work when you please." The lord coughed. Elisabeth started by see how bad it was. The lord was having a hard time breathing, had a faint heartbeat, and was coughing up blood.

She looked at the guard. "Can you help him to the bath?" The guard nodded as he went to help his master. "I don't need a bath." The guard looked at Elisabeth. "My lord, you need to be bathed at least twice a day. Your sheets need to be cleaned once a week, if you're ever going to get better." The lord looked at her. The guard then spoke. "My lord this woman saved fifty people on her own. If you don't listen, you might as well be dead." The lord gave in after that and did as she asked.

As he bathed, Elisabeth cleaned his sheets and hung them out to dry. The lord was taken to the garden after his bath. After he sat down, Elisabeth gave him some tea and porridge that she made. The lord ate it without complaint. After three weeks, the lord was healthy again. As the end of the forth week came, Elisabeth packed her bags. "My lord, with you in good health, I ask to go home." The lord hesitated, wanting her to stay longer. He offered her gold and jewels in vein.

The lord sighed, "Yes, you may go. However, I'd wish you'd stay." "My lord?" "I've grown attached to you over the past few weeks. Why don't you come back and work for me? You'll be able to go home whenever you please! I'll even pay you ten gold! What do you say?" Elisabeth thought about it. "My lord, it is a tempting offer but, what would I be doing? I tend to the elderly in my town. You have plenty of servants to tend to you." The lord thought for a moment, then sighed.

"You are very right. Not even I can think of something." Elisabeth smiled, "If it pleases my lord, I'd like to come back as a guest." The lord perked up, "That would be wonderful! Come to visit whenever you please!" Elisabeth bowed and left for home. As Elisabeth returned, she developed a nasty cough. She knew this would happen. After all she was around fifty people and didn't take care of herself. Then, she went to tend to the lord and still didn't take care of herself.

Elisabeth fell greatly ill. She instead no one tended to her. One of her neighbors began writing letters for her and even reading them to her. After two months, the lord sent a letter to her to invite her to a party he was hosting. "My dearest Elisabeth, how are you fairing? I wish for you to be my guest! As a thank you for your help, I am holding a party in your honor! Please, come for the evening. I wish to ask you something very important. It's on the fifteenth of next month. –Lord Alexander"

After reading the letter, her neighbor looked at her. "Please, decline. Tell him the truth." Elisabeth said in a raspy voice. Her neighbor wrote to the lord as requested. "Dear Lord Alexander, I regret to inform you that Elisabeth will not be able to a tend this event. Fore, she has been sick in bed for two months. She cared for everyone except herself. Elisabeth will be lucky if she's still alive by this time next month. Please, send help. She has refused the help here. –Maximus"

After reading this, Lord Alexander sent for the best doctor around. Then, left for Elisabeth with the doctor. Three days after the letter was reserved, Lord Alexander and the doctor arrived. Maximus let them in and led them to her. Elisabeth was having difficulty breathing. "Can you help her?"Maximus asked. "Let me see." The doctor walked up and checked her. "She's not as bad as she looks. Give her this, one with every meal. With that, whatever was in her system should be gone within a week or two." "Thank you, doc." Lord Alexander said, paying him.

Lord Alexander looked at Elisabeth. Maximus was kneeling at her side muttering something under his breath. Lord Alexander went down stairs and found the kitchen. He looked around but found nothing except some stale bread. "My lord, thank you for helping her." Maximus said. "Don't worry about it. Where is all her food?" "You don't know? Elisabeth use to grow her food. Then gave it away when she left. Everyone here helps with her food now."

"I see." A knock came from the door. "That must be her next meal." Maximus opened the door to find three elderly ladies and a pot of food. "How is she?" One of the ladies asked. "We say the doctor leaving." Said another. "She's going to be fine. Our lord got the medicine for her. She has to take it with every meal." The women sighed and handed him the pot. "Sneak it into her food or she won't take it." Maximus nodded. After Elisabeth ate, Maximus had to leave. "Alright, go ahead and rest.

I'll see you tomorrow." Maximus turned and left. Lord Alexander went after him, confused. "Why are you leaving?" "My lord, I know she's in good hands now. Besides, I have a wife and daughter that need me as well." "I thought-." Maximus looked shocked, "Elisabeth is an orphan that came to the town. Everyone thinks of her as family. We worked hard to raise her. To me, she's my little sister who never asks for help." After explaining Maximus left. Lord Alexander went back upstairs and sat down. "My lord?" Elisabeth called. "Sorry, did I wake you?"

Elisabeth shook her head. "What are you doing here?" "I'm her to take care of you." Elisabeth smiled. For the next two weeks, Lord Alexander took care of Elisabeth. He did for her what she did for him. Once she was better, Alexander was even surer of what he wanted. "Elisabeth, do you wish to come to that party?" "I'm not much on big events. Didn't you want to ask me something?" Lord Alexander smiled. "Yes, I wanted to ask you if you would be my wife." Lord Alexander said getting on one knee and pulled out a ring.

Elisabeth was speechless and began tearing up. "Yes, I would love to be your wife." Alexander kissed Elisabeth. After, they went through town and told everyone. The man hugged and congratulated them. The woman began to sear tears of joy. The elderly and children asked about future visits. One elderly couple asked about future children. Elisabeth introduced them as her father and mother. Since they found her and brought her back. After the wedding, the two had six children, three sons and three daughters. The two lived as happily as two doves.
