Chapitre 218: Soulmate (1'917 Words)
Sitting on the ground which was part of the white void Mikael had found himself in after his unfortunate passing through a flattened skull on the street, he expectantly looks up at the old man with short white hair and carefully trimmed beard that stood before him.
This old man was in turn suspiciously eyeing the average looking figure of Mikael while squinting his eyes as if trying to peel him with only his eyes.
This continued to the point where Mikael could no longer endure it, the look together with the awkward silence made this experience very uncomfortable.
"Ehm…Sir? Can you please explain what is going on right now?" Unsure as to how to react in this situation Mikael just opted for being formal in his approach.
His words seem to have brought the old man out of his trance of eyeing Mikael as he rapidly blinks as if startled.
"Eh? Ah! Right, right. Sorry for that kid but you're the second one to have been chosen for this mission by the fates. The first one… was a bit of a problem and you in fact were chosen in order to take care of this problem. I just tried to make sure you would indeed fit the bill and not make things worse than they already are." Quick to regain his wits the old man recomposes himself and starts explaining.
"The mission you were chosen for is to go to different worlds and clean out the reincarnators that are or will wreak havoc there with their idiotic wishes in order to recreate some of the balance in this part of the multiverse." As he spoke bubbles showcasing some rather grotesque or simply depraved scenes caused by presumably reincarnators showed up before bursting again.
Raising his hand in question Mikael starts speaking after receiving a nod from the old man.
"If you don't mind me asking but why me and what about this other one that got chosen before me?" Seemingly hitting a sore spot the old mans expression turned quite ugly almost immediately.
"Well… you were chosen to in order to solve a problem that concerns the first person to be chosen for this mission. That person goes by the name Noel and SHE, was chosen because the fates have predicted that she would showcase an unparalleled success rate in this mission…but sadly there is a major problem with her." A shiver caused the old man to pause as his eye's lost focus for a moment as if recalling something.
Mikael patiently waits for the old man to recover and continue his explanation.
After a moment the old man snaps out of it and once again starts speaking, but this time with a slight undertone of fear.
"She, Noel, is a descendent of a transcendent being. This alone wouldn't be much of a problem as there are billions of them out there, but she somehow managed to draw upon her roots causing her to awaken her inheritance." At this point he almost started to sweat.
Looking at the clueless expression of curiosity on Mikael's face the old man's expression soured even more.
"A transcendent being is something that stands on top of the roof power wise, and now that she got her access to her inheritance, she practically has the potential to become something stronger than my fu*king boss! WHO IS THE GOD DAMN FATE OF THE MULTIVERSE!!!" Finally losing his grip the old man screamed the last part.
Even if Mikael couldn't really grasp just what kind of being something on the transcendent level is, the reaction of the old man was enough to make it clear that it was nothing to scoff at.
After his outburst the old man just stood there lost in thoughts and slightly panting form the emotional turmoil he just experienced.
"Ehm, if she is such a scary person then why give her the mission and what could I possibly do to solve this problem, I'm just a normal human after all." Having waited for what he thought was long enough so that the old man could calm down again Mikael expresses his thoughts on the matter he just learnt.
Immediate after he finished speaking the old man's expression shifted to one of glee and relive.
"She was chosen by the fates, I can't change that, I after all work for it unlike those clowns you should know as ROB's that are the source of this mess with reincarnators wreaking havoc. And as for what you can do… lets say it like this…" A sly grin appears on the old mans face as he looked down on Mikael, giving him a slightly bad feeling.
"YOU'RE..." Pointing his index finger at Mikael's face the old man spoke.
"Her soulmate!" He says with triumph in his voice.
"…"
"…"
An awkward silence ensued after the old man's declaration as they both stare at each other, one with a wide grin and the other with clueless expression.
"Sight, right you have not the slightest clue what I'm trying to say do you?" The old man says as his grin leaves his face, and a disappointed expression took over.
"Sorry…" Mikael apologizes silently in hopes that the old man would elaborate what he meant.
Massaging the bridge of his noes the old man joins Mikael in sitting on the ground as if the whole conversation had taken a great toll on him.
"Yeah yeah no matter." Taking a deep breath to calm himself and get rid of his disappointment the old man gathers himself again.
"In order to understand what I mean you must first understand what it means to be a soulmate." Nodding at his words Mikael makes a serious expression to show that he was paying attention after all he already found out that he won't be able to refuse as he similarly to this Noel was chosen by the fates for this mission, so he should better pay attention to understand what is going to come for him in the future.
Slightly appeased by how serious Mikael took this situation the old man starts with his explanation.
"Balance, soulmates are two souls that balance each other out. When two soulmates meet each other then they will enter a period of balance where they will affect each other in a way that benefits the multiverse. Meeting one's soulmate is so extremely rare that it isn't something most beings even know about, well, at least in detail. In order to get you here I and my boss had to expend a great amount of energy, but if our plan works out then the benefits will be more than enough to cover our expenses." Pausing to let Mikael digest what he just told him the old man watches the average looking man in front of him thinking.
"So, you and your boss's plan is to place me and this Noel together and once we are this balance thingy will kick in and make sure that my and more importantly, her, actions will benefit the multiverse instead of harming it… did I get that right?" He may have not been the sharpest tool in the shed but even he could piece together what the old man and his boss were planning to do with all the pieces laid bare before him like this.
The old man nods with a satisfied smile on his face.
"Correct. Now with this out of the way I will explain a bit more about this mission you two have." Feeling a lot better now the old man wanted to move on with the actual topic but got stopped by Mikael's question.
"just to be sure, I don't have to do anything special like befriending her, or stop her from doing certain things, right?" His question caused the old man to hum silently.
"No, as soon as you two meet your souls will click into place and create a balance that fits perfectly into the very fabric of the multiverse which will then guide you along your destiny." The words calmed Mikael worries and he gives a nod to the old man as a sign of moving on to the next topic.
"Good, as for the mission. You will spin a fortune wheel full of the powers of fictional characters after which you will be sent to the lobby from where you can choose which reincarnator you want to eliminate first.
You and Noel share the same lobby and its features but both of you get rewards separately upon the elimination of the target. The only way to return to the lobby and choose a new target is by taking care of the ongoing one. Rewards come in the form of tickets that are ranked from tier 1 to tier 3, the tier of the ticket is decide by the strength of the reincarnator killed. Tickets can be used in the shop which you can access in the lobby to buy new powers and abilities, another thing, the tickets can be upgraded in a ration of 3 to 1." Waiting for Mikael to take all the information in the old man stood up from the white ground once again looking down at Mikael's average looking face which caused him to squint his eyes as he felt he forgot something.
His eyes wander over Mikaels face for moment before the old mans expression lightened up in realization.
"Ah! Right, when I send you away you will be able to choose your appearance before moving on to the lobby where Noel will be waiting for you." The words brought Mikael out of his thoughts and a wry smile appeared on his face.
"I'm not that insecure about my looks… but thanks none the less." Also standing up Mikael nods at the old man who chuckles before turning around and waving his hand causing a giant golden fortune wheel to appear in the air with a golden rope hanging down right in front of Mikael's nose.
Looking at the extravagant looking wheel Mikael couldn't help but chuckle.
"So, my power is going to be decided by luck? Isn't that just your boss's way of getting some enjoyment?" His words caused the old man to freeze up before starring at the fortune wheel with wide eyes.
"How the hell haven't I realized that until now?" Laughing loudly at the old man's genuine surprise Mikael pulls the rope causing the wheel to spin at ridicules speeds.
Not one to waist much time Mikael once again pulls on the golden rope stopping the giant wheel to abruptly stop in its track.
"Full Counter… not the best one out there but definitely a good one." Muttering to himself Mikael tries recalled everything he knew about this power and its applications from the anime and manga of Seven deadly sins to get a good picture of what he gained.
"Hmm, a good one, you will need a bit of practice but once you got the timing down you will be a force to reckon with. By the way this version of Full Counter will be a fusion of both the physical and magical version including Counter Vanish and Revenge Counter." Perking up at the old mans words Mikael finds himself getting excited after all this ability would allow him to reflect practically any kind of attack back at his opponent with at least twice the force or outright vanish them.
