As the tour bus traveled to its destination.
The chessboard was set up.
All of the Chess Club teenagers were very interested in this game that was about to be played. They were chattering as they crowded around, ready to watch their leaders game with Manas.
The girl asked, "Which color do you need, White or Black?"
Manas smiled and said, "There's no need to ask me that."
The boy said, "Big Bro, our sister is a professional player and sometimes the color decides the ending of the match."
"Don't worry, I'm not too bad either," Manas said.
The girl asked in surprise, "Have you ever played chess on online servers. What rank are you?"
Manas replied, "1108 or so"
The girl obviously did not understand this correctly. She said in surprise, "Yoho, You really are an amateur? That's about the same level as our lowest level of professionals ?"
The girl said, "Then there really isn't a need for any handicap."
Thus, the girl excitedly said, "Come, come, let's guess the stones 1 ."
An amateur, it's such an interesting word but I have to disappoint you all because this bro here won the state champion when I was 14!
Manas didn't say anything to that. He didn't need to explain himself too much. Everything will be known when the game starts.
They started the game. The girl was to go second while Manas would start with white.
Manas placed his first soldier in a rather casual manner.
But the moment the girl picked up her piece, it felt as though she had changed into a completely different person. Her playstyle was very solid, and it felt quite different from her reckless personality. She prioritized playing a defensive style and adopted a careful and steady strategy. On top of that, her positioning of the pieces and opening strategy were all played to perfection and in a very professional manner.
Just one look and you'd know that she had had professional training before. Further, Manas found this playstyle and strategy to be very familiar.
How can he not find it familiar, he himself played like this during his younger days.
Manas couldn't help but tease her, "Who's your teacher?"
The girl looked up. "My aunt."
"Your aunt?" Manas was taken aback and suddenly thought of someone.
When did I become her aunt!
The exclaimed, "Do you know my aunt?"
Manas dully replied, "The hell, as if I would know her. I don't even remember my own aunt's name."
The girl retorted angrily, "Are you out of mind Little Aunty."
Manas's face twitched and nearly spat out vulgar profanities.
Good! Good!
I'll beat the shit out of you little girl and make you a little old granny.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
They argued and played at the same time.
Manas found out about a lot of things from the conversations and realized that so much had changed in Delhi. Five years made a world of difference.
Hai, it seems like I'm going to be lost again here if I don't call for help.
Manas sighed. Then he placed a piece down.
The girl smiled and said, "So, you should watch more television when you have the time. Otherwise, your news will be too outdated. And you'll end up getting eliminated from society.".
She then looked at the chessboard and froze. She yelped as though someone had stepped on her tail. "Oh damn, y-you deliberately talked to me while playing. This is cheating Little Aunt "
Sign, Even after losing so miserably to me she still has the guts to curse me. She really has gall bladder of a tiger!
The girl was dumbfounded!
The boy was also very surprised!
Everyone looked like they had witnessed some sort of novel thing after all she is a professional player, cheap tricks as such shouldn't have worked on her.
"Damn, how many days it has been since our senior sister lost!"
"Uh, this Uncle really won with such an outdated way of playing!"
Everyone was speechless and sighed at how the style of play was really a reflection of the person. This was such an old way of playing!
He really was hermit after all!
But Manas said, "What's wrong with my way of playing, I didn't cheat at all?"
The boy answered, "Nothing is wrong with your playstyle, it's just that it's too old fashioned"
The boy turned to the girl and said, "But sis, you're really in danger this time."
The girl also replied sulkily, "This big bro is very strong.I was distracted and didn't notice that what style Uncle was playing. Otherwise, I wouldn't have played the way that I did. There are so many ways of countering this playstyle...Damn "
But Manas just smiled and said nothing.
"You all are just a bunch of noobs in front of me. You can't beat me even if you play 100 times" Manas thought in his heart.
But still, Manas said kindly, "Then let's not count this game."
The girl resigned and conceded the game. "Let's play another game."
Manas smiled and said, "Sure."
This time, the girl played in a more serious manner.
But not long after the game started, everyone exclaimed again.
"What?"
"What?"
"It's the old counter-defensive style again?"
"Big Bro, just which era do you hail from?"
But Manas played on as usual.
Soon after, the haughty girl admitted defeat in the middlegame. "Aiya, I made a mistake!"
Although the boy was not as good as the haughty girl, he also knew how to play chess. " Sis, you could've won this game easily."
The girl thought so as well. "Yeah, I made the wrong move. Little Aunty really knows how to play "
" What do you call this style Little Aunt "Hermit-Style", tell me..tell me Aunty," asked the girl curiously.
The boy giggled, "Sis, why don't I play instead. I've never lost against that old hermit style uncle played. I figured out this outdated style of playing when I first picked up chess."
The girl curled her lips and said, "Alright, alright, it's your turn brother."
The boy sat over. "Big Bro, I won't be going easy on you. Are you ready?"
Manas smiled "No problem, let's just play normally."
The boy smiled and replied "Alright then! I'm gonna show you why that old style has been eliminated from play and only amateurs play it. You should really change to a new style of play."
Here we go again. Did their teacher only teach them how to brag?
I'll crush you into splinters. Bring it on little shrimp!
Manas smiled and said, "We'll see about that after you've won."
The boy replied, "Alright!"
The haughty girl also cheered, "Brother you can do it. Kick the ass of this hermit. crush his queen and kill all his pieces "
Another teenager said timidly, "We're professional chess players, so don't you embarrass us. Save our nose from being cut by an outsider."
The boy replied, "Sister, I'll be fine. Just wait for him to be crushed by my new strategy."
The boy rubbed his hands excitedly as if the victory is already in his grasp!
"You'll definitely lose Hermit Uncle!" the boy exclaimed in his heart.
In the whole club group, the arrogant girl's standard of play was the highest, and her ranking among them was also the highest. The opponent was not a full-fledged amateur, which was equivalent to a low-leveled professional. But playing against a professional player like the Hermit Uncle was not going to make a difference.
Furthermore, the opponent was using the outdated conservative strategy, so that would make it really easy to play against. They did not think that their senior sister would lose, and neither did the boy think so.
But the reality was in front of them!
Not only did he win against her, but he also did it almost flawlessly.
The boy played very conservatively in comparison to that girl!
However, after just a few moves in the opening, the boy looked suffocated. It was as though he couldn't muster any strength to move his queen to any other places on the board.
He has fallen into the opponent's trap!
Furthermore, it was a complex one too.
His queen will definitely be killed!
Manas smiled.
Eliminated?
Outdated?
So what of it?
He had already heard those words too many times today when he played against his opponents during his time.
I might really have fallen behind because I just came back from overseas.
And I might really be outdated too both in fashion and playstyle.
Perhaps times have changed the people.
However—
Manas raised his hand to place the queen on the board.
"Checkmate"
Across from him, the boys' game had already collapsed!
The boy was stunned!
The girl was dumbfounded!
Everyone looked at Hermit Uncle in astonishment!
Manas grinned.
I'll never change with time.
