Chapitre 97: Dawn of the Long Night

The acerbic Intelligence Officer commanding the Vector Attack Craft demands it engage Lucy in combat, but the crew insists that the sinking of the island facility makes that impossible. An exchange of stares between Lucy and Arakawa confirms the fate of Chief Kakuzawa. While the operative is adamant about not letting Lucy escape, his subordinates insist that she will die when the island sinks. Arakawa boards the craft with the vaccine and they make way for the ship. Lucy watches almost wistfully while the island falls. The surface building splits in half and gets sucked down, and the remaining clones drown as the waters flood the floors. Even the underground grotto that once housed the Lebensborn Project floods, with Anna's remains floating and her father's headless body washing out to sea ignominiously.

The pieces of the island drift apart and are sucked into a whirlpool, as the island vanishes forever. Watching from the safety of the ship, Arakawa gazes upon this destructive display as if it were a bad dream. She joyfully celebrates at finally having perfected the vaccine, defeating Kakuzawa's schemes, but realizes that if Lucy is still alive somehow, the war between humans and Diclonii will soon likely begin in earnest. Arakawa wonders if all this would have happened if Lucy was never born, or if the Kakuzawas never had horns. She then starts to cry and calls the Chief a foolish man.

In an escape pod much like the one Kurama sent Nana away in, Lucy arrives on the beachfront for the second time, determined to see Kouta, but is afraid to face him now that his memories of his family's murder have returned. At a loss for what to do, Lucy is surprised to find Kouta himself, still wounded, but laying on the beach waiting for her. A confrontation almost a decade in the offing is about to take place.

Chapitre 98: The Ocean to The Past

Lucy returns to the beach in a pod like the one Nana came to Kamakura in earlier. She finds a bleeding Kouta waiting for her, having come out to find her despite his wounds. He disgustedly refuses both her touch and her pleas to go back to the hospital, and only offers her his overcoat to cover herself up since she's still naked. He rises from his sitting position, saying that he wants to show her something, but then collapses from the pain and blood loss, which results in her carrying him on her back to their destination. She starts to cry along the way, knowing that the memories of his family's murder have returned, and aches from his physical closeness, but his mental and spiritual distance will not deter her. Right at a metal lighthouse tower overlooking the beach, Lucy uses her vectors to open the doors and climbs a spiraling staircase, which ends with a breathtakingly beautiful view of the Kamakura and Enoshima Island areas, as well as Fujisawa. Kouta explains that he always wanted to show her this place because Kanae had loved the view, even before there was a lighthouse, and that she loved the ocean. Instantly, he sits up and demands to know why Lucy killed his father and sister, as well as the many other people she has killed.

Apology

Her sole reason for bearing so much sadness.

She finally gives a full explanation about her two other personalities, describing the one who hates humans and wishes to kill them (the DNA Voice), and the one that wants to coexist with them (Nyu). Lucy states she killed his family to end her attachment to him and all humans since she thought he betrayed her and noted she always seemed to end up betrayed. She then recounts their reunion and how it was a chance to start over, as Kouta didn't remember his past and Nyu knew nothing about her real self. She goes on to say how happy she was that Nyu could live so peacefully and speaks of the internal battle between her the vicious killer and the loving and pure Nyu. She knows that her mistakes are plentiful and doesn't expect to his forgiveness, but says the only reason she's held on for so long was to apologize to Kouta. She apologizes repeatedly and profusely, desperately sincere in wanting to make things better again between them.
