Chapitre 17: Rise and fall of noble class.

Noble, senator, magician, or anything else were an elite class, they ruled over common people.

In the older days, almost all city-states, tribes, and various kingdoms would either be feudalism or oligarchy based on the ruling or influential class, mostly the family that inherited their family prestige over the long period of time. Both administrative and military would fall to the man from the high social position or the one with good connections.

Did no one ever think of other ways before?

Let's started with the basic of Noseth.

If looking from the perspective of an earthling, this world that the continent of Noseth situated was not that different in basic material, many things resembled the earth. There may be some differences in animal and race of species close to homo sapiens, but that was not the main difference. Homo sapiens was lived with their close relative, the Neanderthal, and Denisovan, before. There also many animals we never knew before and it would be a shocking sight if we saw them, compare to those deep sea fish, a horned rabbit was a very lovely creature.

Then what was the main difference between the two worlds? It would be magic.

The continent of Noseth, technological advances and how to run an infrastructure was depended too much on magic, unlike planet Earth.

Why bother researching something confusing and hard like Archimedes' screw or how to build something like roman adequate that requires both understandings of siphons principle and concrete technology?

When you could just let your lord build the huge reservoir using earth magic and ask his wife to fill it with water.

Why bother researching metallurgy that needed special design lace like a furnace and required a lot of manpower to fill in the air?

One good fire mage who trained enough could produce thousand-degree celsius which is enough to melt copper into a liquid state, and for iron, an archwizard with enough force could melt it but that would require hard long years of practice while providing various results due to individual talent.

Ferocious animals? A bare hands martial artist with enough force could face bear head on and win.

Since it seemed to be omnipotent, did magic had no bad side?

Yes, there was.

There would be a bad effect if used too much. Almost all magician would be losing the ability to think reasonable and was under the control of their own very basic instinct; the unquenchable hungry until fully full, the ache to excrete, the yearning to sleep, and last, the desire for lust. The former three would be easy to achieve with the gratitude of people who received help and the last things would be a way for common people to get good blood or put their child into the family of people with good magic ability.

In sum, it gave them too much leeway with life and the need for technology was reduce.

The technology required for construction was reduced due to earth magic, the need for water infrastructure was reduced with water magic, the healthcare was easily taken care of by light magic.

These reasons made the common people could not gain independence from their lord or magician.

At first the people would live together but since magician power was used too much, so much that people addicted to it comfortably, the magician class began to thrive and they would later become the pillar of their society, hence they got more free time and could spend their time on research and practice, the gap then became wider and wider.

Thus the people with magic talent became an elite class and when some common people showed talent in magic, they would get adopted or married into the elite class, if they were lucky. Some could join various sects, they may live not too comfortable but would have a hope of improving themselves. Some with hard to find talent but having bad luck may become a rogue mage and live their lives in the way they please.

However, talent people with bad luck possibly end up as a slave for noble to use or just died prematurely.

This changed when David came to power.

One of the main reason for David accomplishment was his broad-minded, he disregarded bloodline and status. For him, both nobles and common people were the same, they were all human being, the only way to judge human worth was their own abilities.

Meritocracy was the norm on earth, it was true that social connections and wealth were real and could give a better start, but the talent and ability of one own individual were held in high regard.

Normally, even David could not change the whole society on his own but his luck was good.

The reason for David's success in adopting meritocracy over a short period of time must give credit to David's father in law.

Just like how Philip the second and Frederick the great built the base for his successor, David got lucky to found the king with unmatched vision at this Noseth who start the foundation for him.

With David power, that was buffed by the cheat he got, reached at its peak around the age of 25, David, a one-man army, was strong enough to win almost every battle he led if the number was not too different, but to govern the vast land under his rule a large numbers of administrative worker was need.

That was the reason he did not completely destroy the noble system. David would let the nobles who joined him whether a duke, marquis, count or nobles of other ranks kept their position as long as they proven loyalty and obeyed his law.

It was true that David retained noble and magician in his service but these two would become less important as time went on. When people began to enlight with education, the noble would be obsoleted and the magician would be just another special force to respond for any disaster that may occur in the future. Just like how people in earth respected polices and firemen for their devotion but it was not like we worshipped them.

Well, he kept only the capable and uncorrupted noble with him. But did they really harmless?

They were capable people with strong influential and connection, they were also good at taking care of their own people and domain. But did their really cut off from ambitions of their own?

A real man of value could lay low for ten years and who could be sure that these nobles were not. Did they just wait for the chance?

A dog would fight to the death if there was no way out. Would they join hand in hand if David pressures them too much?

David was rushing too much, but could anyone blame him, the system warning was something that reminds him that this was not the ending. Only two years left for David to prepare against the unpredictable things that could happen.

David's skill, an eye of all-knowing, was good but he could not look beyond the distance far far away. He still a human and human could make mistake.

If a young baron could create the empire in one lifespan, then it was possible too for other people, right?.

However, for a smart man to pick a fight against the strongest man ever lived, his ally and army, a new kind of weapon were needed.

***************************************************************

At the northern part of Noseth, In the workshop of a noble's daughter.

"Young mistress, what is this black thing? Is it a powder?"

"Ufufu, you will see later. By the way how many time I have to remind you to call me ojousama, I like the sound of it. I hope father will bring a souvenir for me form the capital soon. But really, create a vast empire in only a mere 30 years, did he think he is Genghis Khan. Well, he won't be a match for this. Ohohohohoho."

"Ojousama, please stop with this laugh. It's weird."

A young girl around ten years old seem to create some earth shattering invention but her role would appear at a later time, maybe a decades later, or could be as fast as mere two years.
