The mark, at least from what I remember about Demon Slayer, is only achieved after meeting a few requirements: 1 - When the user's body heats up to an absurd level above normal. (Check). 2 - Generally, though not always, when the breathing user is close to death. (No Check). 3 - The breathing user needs to have already come into contact with someone with the mark (it's like a kind of disease). (Check). There are some minor details, but that's it.
