yeah i think, he's trying to understand the core of magic not the native way if using magic. If he does understand magic he could use it in any world without restrictions and control all concept too eventually not being stuck on something trivial as elemental affinity or magic system affinity while also being able to practically dismantle all magic systems because he understands "magic" itself
hey author, please can you explain to me his path with the codex now, cause if he is not trying to understand the magic system, is he trying to understand concepts and elements instead of how natives cast magic, like trying to understand fire,ice,time etc but not trying to understand how the natives cast ice magic.
