Yeah it has to be hard. It’s bad enough when the person you love isn’t yours, but it’s even worse when the person they love is a genuine good person. Because then you can’t even hate them to console yourself. At least if they were horrible you could use it as an excuse to try and drive a wedge. But when they’re genuinely kind and decent all you can do is hate yourself.
I pull my hand back, feeling a little foolish. Despite myself, I spend more time with him, watching him work. He's absorbed in his task, completely oblivious to how much he unsettles me. The more I observe, the more I find it impossible to hate him. Noelle is… good. Inside and out, it seems. And that realization stings more than anything else.
