Mostly War. They do fight in space against other races. It's a common trope but it's a rather realistic one. I believe there could be other ways they would die. What you mentioned could be one reason, of course. I'd say when it comes to augments from other races forcefully added or such, yeah.
Still, how could a youth comprehend this? How could someone who had never faced death understand how scary it was? Ron had. Even though he was so young. Which was why he found it so foolish. Learning to become a soldier? To go die? No, thanks. He wouldn't ever want this kind of life. And so, he found all those who fawned over such ideas quite pitiful. They didn't understand how lucky they had it now.

Very interesting concept. I can only see it bringing about chaos as everyone focusing greedily on themselves, following paths that ends up leading nowhere due to others acting in similar ways. Who would want to remain a peasant if there were paths to glory? This is very interesting, i'll give you that.
