It is stated "SOMETHING else" not SOMEONE else. So, she is not talking about James at all, here. She is talking about the simple life she would have been content with and that she always had envisioned for herself. She isn't "convincing herself", she actually wanted that, it was said multiple times before, in the story. She is being forced into a life she didn't want.
Madeline didn't understand why Calhoun was blaming her when she was only trying to protect herself. What was wrong in having her own choice? To be forcibly pushed into a life which she didn't want, to be torn away from her family, when her heart wanted something else.

He could do whatever he wanted except touching her. Maybe it would be good for him to be with another person and maybe he would change his mind?

Thank you!! Finally someone realistic and not fangirling everytime he says something a little romantic 😅 I mean, that's sweet I totally agree with that, but they all forget that she doesn't share the same feelings and also she is deprived of her freedom because HE doesn't want her to be away from him. And it's never about what SHE wants because HER wants aren't the same as HIS wants, so he isn't okay with them. Yes, HE chose her, but SHE didn't choose him. The fact that he chose her sadly doesn't mean that she has to choose him in return.
Madeline turned to her left side, walking towards one side of the cliff but not enough to reach the edge to say, "You stole the opportunity of something that could bloom. You cannot say that I don't feel anything towards the man when there's an obvious affinity that I share with him, and he feels the same way."
