I think it's because the riordan series is from Percy's perspective. You're just plain wrong. As far as I remember, this fic never went into explicit detail explaining the mate bond. You're just filling the blanks with your own headcanon. Also, he was a not magical being before getting transported to twilight, and it was only after he became a shapeshifter that he encountered this problem. a.k.a his newfound magical nature is influencing him into taking actions he otherwise wouldn't have taken. Kinda like how jacob fought the family of a newborn child because of some non-existent perceived threat to her. No rational person capable of self-control would do that. You can't classify that as just "changing" by any metric of the word.
