Please dont forget that The author explained that each mages is different in how much light grey - dark grey - black nodes they each have so if a certain spell is place lets say at node 700 commoned with only 700 light grey may have this spell placed in the dark grey zone or in between them which make it difficult to activated it since unlocking a dark grey nodes is multiple harder than a light grey one
The spell only had five nodes making it quite easy to cast. The only reason it wasn't att that popular was that with some people one of the required nodes was dark-grey. If it was, there were few people willing to risk trying to awaken it, leave alone cast the spell. Villin decided to take the gamble since there were no other offensive spells here that fit his requirements.

Probably something like wuxia novel where the character have inner circuit that move their inner energy. The web should then be the inner circuit and something like magicule or whatever the author gonna make will be the inner energy.
That being said even if he chose the latter he would only be able to try and make some progress with one of the disciplines. All three of the subjects needed magic to work, but there were ways to practice it even before you awakened your 'web'.
