After what seemed like forever my patience had worn thin and I still didn't hear anything in the darkness that permeated the beach.
“Where is he?" I finally broke.
“Sometimes it takes him a while to get the flashbacks to go away,” Jack stated sagely.
He wasn't looking at me or out towards the beach as I was, instead he was staring at his foot that continued to push the swing back and forth.
“Flashbacks from when you guys were in the army?” I asked.
Jack's face twisted in horror. “We were in the Marines, Elizabeth.”
I rolled my eyes irritably. “Whatever, Jack, honestly. One military branch is the same as the next, isn't it?”
“No, no it's not, young lady. The army is full of whiny little bitches that kept having to call us to come and get them out of whatever their boneheaded commander had gotten them into,” Jack growled at me.
