Capítulo 28: Rooftop Chase

Although I originally came to the bar to look for a hookup, after the encounter with the man in the beige suit, I was no longer in the mood. It probably wouldn't work anyway. Most of the girls must have been scared off by my sudden outburst.

Having nothing left to do there, I quickly finished my whiskey and walked out. I half expected the man to wait for me there, but when I got outside, I found nobody.

Well, nobody that I could see. However, I sensed the unsettling feeling coming from multiple directions.

I sighed and jumped up onto the rooftops. It would be easier to avoid bullets there rather than on the street since I had much more space to maneuver. I started running at full speed, leaping from one building to another at random, making it harder for the assailants to aim at me.

They started chasing after me while shooting non-stop, but I was much quicker than them, and soon they were left far behind. I didn't want to lose them though, so I slowed down, adjusting my pace so that I could maintain a safe distance between us.

There were definitely more of them than the last time, but I couldn't tell how many exactly. More than twenty, or so it seemed. Facing them all out in the open could be quite a challenge, so I needed to find a place where I could split them up. Thankfully, I already had a good location in mind.

In no time I made it to my destination. I picked the buildings that I burnt a while ago, after the incident with that Emily girl and the redhead. Due to all of the things happening around the city, nothing had been done to restore them yet. They were abandoned and in ruins, providing me with a lot of cover and a complex layout. Perfect terrain for a fight against a big group.

I didn't expect I would be so lucky that I would get to choose a place where we would fight. Did they plan to ambush me in the bar from the start? They must have, otherwise they wouldn't have enough time to reposition themselves. I left the bar only a few minutes later than the man in the beige suit.

It seems I misjudged them. Maybe they didn't care about the lives of the people from this world after all.

I jumped in through the window. The debris and broken glass crunched underneath my feet as I landed. I could feel the uneven surface through the thin soles of my shoes. I should have worn military boots, even if they would look out of place in the bar. After all, I could never know when the organization would attack. I decided I would start doing that from now on.

It was not the time to worry about my clothes though. My attackers seemed to have arrived. They haven't followed me in yet though, just stopped on the rooftops of the nearby buildings, probably waiting for new orders.

I quickly moved away from the window, finding a safe spot where the bullets wouldn't hit me. I quickly surveyed the room, looking for anything that could be used as a weapon. I had my pocket knife with me, but it would be nice to have more options.

I haven't noticed anything useful, so I moved further inside. I shouldn't stick too close to the entrance, since I wanted to lure them in, deep into the building.

I hoped they would enter, trying to find and kill me. Then I could play hide and seek with them for a bit. They would likely need to split into smaller teams to make their search efficient. As a result, they would lose part of the advantage they had from their numbers.

With the ground being completely covered in debris, it was close to impossible to move around silently. And I was on my own, so I knew that every sound that I hear must be coming from an enemy.

The only problem was the guy in the beige suit. I haven't seen him during the chase, but I doubt he left the scene completely. Last time he seemed to be observing the fight from above, so maybe this time he was planning to do the same? He wouldn't be able to see much once everyone entered the building though.

He didn't seem to be able to do anything special aside from teleporting on his own, so there was no point worrying about him too much right now. I needed to prepare for the fight.

The next room I found myself in was a remnant of a kitchen. Now that was pretty decent provisional weaponry. Plenty of kitchenware survived the fire. All the pots and pans have seen the better days, but it didn't matter. It's not like I was going to use them for cooking.

And they were not the only things I found. There was also an impressive collection of various kitchen knives on display. Their handles were melted, but they could still work somehow.

I stuffed two behind my belt, grabbed a big pan, and quickly hid behind the counter. I had no more time to pick and choose.

The assailants were finally on the move. I heard two people enter the room I was in just a moment ago.

Debris crunched underneath their feet, telling me where they were headed. One of them started slowly walking my way, while the other went in the opposite direction.

I remained crouched in complete silence as he entered the kitchen. I waited until he got as close as possible without spotting me.

Then I jumped out of hiding and smashed him in the head with the pan. His teammate immediately turned around at the noise and started shooting, but I just used the unconscious guy as a meat shield. I grabbed one of the knives I had behind my belt and threw it straight at the shooter. He fell on the ground as it pierced his heart.

Everything went silent again. Thanks to that, I could hear some faint noises coming from different parts of the building, letting me know that more people have entered.

I grabbed two more knives from the display and slowly headed deeper in, paying attention to my footsteps.
