It rained fire as the outwardly being terrorized the mages with fierce forms of magic. He raged through scores of mages and even his own constructs. It seemed as though he even enjoyed the sight before him as he showed a smile of pleasure.
Alexander looked on at the destruction laying all around him, trying his best to keep a calm head and fight off what was left of the ghouls and golems. He had run his dagger through a ghoul and then he glanced at his hands covered in blood, shaking.
"Is this the feeling of fear?" he asked himself. It had been a while since the young mage prodigy felt what it was to be truly afraid. Normally the foes he faced were ones even he alone could take down but the one that stood before him was a threat not only to the world but to the entire realm.
In that instance, the possessed ghoul king looked at Alexander with a death glare. Shivers ran down the spine of the young mage as he stared back at the being. His hands clutching at his daggers tightly so much so that the blisters on his palms couldn't hurt anymore.
"Pitiful child, do you also have an objection to the destruction that lies ahead of you?" The being said with a smirk, one which Alexander had seen before as a familiar face flashed in his head. Just then, fear turned to rage as his daggers lit up with fire. He took a steady battle stance and looked straight at the being with one thing in mind; survival.
"I'm not going to be pushed aside!" Alexander yelled at the top of his lungs to the being floating above him. The ghoul king scoffed and then pointed his finger at Alexander.
"Then die." As he said so, rocky spikes flew out of the ground and were hurling towards Alexander.
The young mage got to a running start position and began to produce heat from his legs. As soon as one of the spikes was about to make contact, he blasted himself forward with the flames from his feet. He made his way straight toward the being at superhuman speed slicing through spikes along the way. He had gotten close to the being and was about to slice when the possessed ghoul king evaded with precision but almost immediately, Alexander followed him with his eyes and swung his other dagger again to which the being also evaded. Alexander and the being seemed to be almost at equal speed, a feat which somewhat surprised the possessed ghoul king.
Soon enough Alexander created a clone of himself to double the attack speed, the being had to contend with four daggers at once which he was evading still pretty well. At this point he had focused all his might into the battle between he and Alexander so much so that his ghouls and golems were slowing down and some were disintegrating.
Alexander tried swinging all four of his daggers at the possessed ghoul king but the being ran a spike through the mages chest which shocked Alexander but caused him to burst into flames.
"I see you got lucky this time." The being said as he looked at the real Alexander who was panting in the corner, still in a battle-ready stance.
"I'm just getting… warmed u…" Alexander was about to finish his statement when he felt a sharp pain in his chest. He then dropped his daggers and clutched at his chest as he knelt down gasping for air.
"You did good child." The being said as he walked close to Alexander.
"Sadly, you're just another failed attempt at saving this pitiful world." He said as he held Alexander down in a kneeling position with earth constructs. He then manifested a molten ball of lava and slowly levitated it toward Alexanders chest which made the young mage yell in agony as the being looked on in delight.
In that moment, a spear was shot at the being which grazed under his left eye, causing him to stop the torture. The spear could have easily been evaded but the construct of the spear wasn't of normal magic, it had an inverted color of reality around it.
"Anti-magic?!" the being exclaimed as though he was in despair.
Feridia tried swinging her sword at the being again which he evaded but a bit slower, allowing her to graze his chest. Next, Tartius shot taped talismans which brought out water whips slashing at the possessed ghoul king. The being looked to be on the defensive at this point as he was shocked to see the humans he regarded as weak being able to control anti-magic; a phenomenon he couldn't predict or sense.
As Tartius and Feridia attacked the being, Alexis tended to Alexanders wounds while Aurora and Johnathan infused their mage power into Reggie who was to create the anti-magic portal.
"You need to get the other mages who are injured to safety." Alexis told Alexander who looked at her and nodded. Then he got up and was about to turn when he looked back and gave her a heartfelt hug.
"Give em hell." He whispered before running off to help the other mages.
"Is Alex ok?" Johnathan asked.
"Yes." Alexis replied.
"Let's bring this guy down!" Reggie said as they joined in to attack the being who was trying to hold his own against them.
Feridia and Johnathan were the close-range combatant swinging their blades from all angles, while Alexis and Reggie provided distant attacks to repel any form of magic the being tried to weave. Tartius and Aurora both acted as restraints for the being's flight and movement. Soon enough they looked to be cornering the ghoul king as their attacks didn't even allow him think.
In a fit of anger, the being shot out a force field which cleared all the house heads in different directions. As he did that, he levitated to the sky and pointed to the crack in the realms causing the rift to get bigger.
"I will not be intimidated by human filth!" He screamed as he formed up a giant molten ball over his head about the size of a small moon.
"You have taken the fun out of this, perhaps it is time I ended you all." He said as he dropped the molten ball. The house heads looked on as the ball was dropping toward them.
At that instant, Reggie threw a spear construct at the ball then he proceeded to wave his hands before locking them in a triangle causing the spear to warp into anti-magic on impact with the ball. Immediately, the ball got sucked into the anti-magic space which enveloped the spear and instantaneously, a ball-like portal appeared.
"It's time!" Reggie yelled.
Tartius threw his taped at the being who was looking on in fear of the portal which Reggie had created. The being tried to evade but was trapped by the shadow technique which was controlled by Aurora. Tartius wrapped the arms and legs of the possessed ghoul king who struggled to no avail. Then he proceeded to pull the being closer to the portal but the being still resisted. Reggie then created two constructs that resembled chains with hooks on them which he shot at the being, piercing him.
"Need a little help?" Reggie said as he pulled the being with one of the hooks as he gave Johnathan the other.
Alexis then also created a Phoenix construct which shot flames at the being pushing him closer to the portal. Soon the lower half of the being was submerged in the portal but as he got to the waist region it stopped.
"What's going on?" Johnathan asked as he looked at Reggie.
"It's time." Reggie replied and at that instance Johnathan knew what Reggie meant. He then looked at Alexis who had tears in her eyes as she was trying to maintain the phoenix construct. The good times he had with her began to flash before his eyes and it all ended with him promising her a better future.
Johnathan recollected himself and then looked at the being in front of him.
"Then let's do this." He said as he tried to remove his hand from the chains but found it difficult.
"I'm sorry madman." Reggie said to Johnathan who looked at him in shock and confusion.
"Make sure you take care of her." Reggie said as the chain he held dragged him toward the portal.
"No, no, this wasn't the plan!" Johnathan yelled as his friend was sucked into the portal alongside the possessed being who was yelling curses on the mages.
There was a loud bang accompanied by silence. Johnathan's ears rang as he tried to regain his balance. He looked up and saw the face of Alexis, she looked as beautiful as ever but tears rolled down her cheeks and fell on his forehead.
"What happened?" Johnathan said, then immediately he sat up looking around.
"Where's…where's Reggie?" he asked in a concerned tone.
"He's gone Jo." Alexis said in a shaky voice. To which Johnathan broke down to his knees, tears instantly rolling down his cheeks. Alexis came closer to console him as he looked down at the ground. The other house heads came closer toward the couple to ascertain what had just happened.
"It seems as though your friend was braver than I had first thought." Tartius said. He was rather impressed by the courage shown by Reggie to defeat the being.
Feridia walked up to Johnathan and put a hand on both his and Alexis' shoulders.
"What he did today will not be forgotten." She added in a calmer voice than she usually let off.
"The rift is closing." Aurora pointed out as the house heads looked up to see the tear in the realms close till there was no separation remaining.
"We did it, we saved the realms." Tartius said.
"But at what cost?" Johnathan said.
**********************************************
"And we have today because of the valiant efforts of our mages, our house leaders and of course the sacrifice of our houses very own wildcard… and resident Madman, Reginald Albrighton." Johnathan concluded his speech to the uproar of the crowd.
It was a celebration of the victory they had obtained from the war which they had fought three days ago. All the house leaders stood behind Johnathan on a podium as he gave his vote of thanks. The crowd was a gathering of all the members of each house who had come out to not only cheer for the house leaders but to also pay respects to Reggie.
"Now without further a-do, it like to unravel the monument we built, in remembrance of our fallen heroes." Alexis gave her speech and as she concluded, the covered object which stood behind them was revealed to be a statue of Reggie and underneath were the names of all the mages who had died in battle.
Johnathan looked at it with awe for he didn't know it was being built.
"Do you like it?" Alexis asked to which Johnathan hugged her deeply.
"I'm sure Reggie would've loved it." He said looking into her eyes. He then looked at the crowd and raised his hand to which they all roared in joy.
Later that night, there was a feast to honor the houses. Alexander was on a table with his fellow mage warriors having a couple drinks when he saw Alexis signaling him to come over to the corner. He then ran to meet her, it had been a while since they'd had a conversation due to her being busy with all the preparations.
"Seems you can handle your own pretty well on the table." Alexis said as she rubbed Alexanders head.
"Yeah, this stuff isn't as strong as the rum we used to drink back at home." Alexander boasted.
"Oh really?" She replied with a raised eyebrow. She then bent a little so as to whisper into his ear.
"Well later I'll take you to where they keep the good stuff."
Alexander giggled and then they both walked to the balcony outside to look at the full moon.
"It's beautiful isn't it?" Alexis asked as she stared at the night sky with a smile as her eyes glistened. Alexander wasn't really as warmed up to anyone as much as he did with Alexis, so seeing her happy always brought joy to his face.
The doors of the balcony opened and in came Johnathan laughing with a bottle of rum in his hand. His eyes met with that of Alexander and then with Alexis who was giggling.
"Hey, guys." He said to which Alexander rolled his eyes then smirked.
"OK, uhm, Alexander, I was told by a cute little birdy that, in order to be with Alexis, I have to ask for your blessing." Johnathan said with an ear wide grin. Alexander then looked at Alexis and then at Johnathan again.
"Did you tell him about the test?" Asked Alexander still looking at Johnathan.
"Oh no I didn't, I thought its best you told him yourself." Alexis said as she folded her arms.
"Test? What Test?" Johnathan asked in confusion. Alexander then went over to a table at the side of the balcony and then set his hand on it for an arm wrestling contest.
"Oh, that's the test?" Johnathan said in relief. He then went over to the table and put one knee down and his elbow on the table. Johnathan then locked eyes with Alexander who was looking at his fiercely.
"Are you both ready?" Alexis asked to which both of them nodded.
"3...2...1…Go!" As Alexis called it, Alexander spat on his palm and then locked it in with Johnathan's. This made Johnathan disgusted and lose focus, giving Alexander the advantage to push Johnathan's hand down.
"Eww!" Johnathan squealed to Alexander and Alexis' amusement.
"What was that?" he asked scraping his hand against a nearby wall.
"Alexander and I always planned to do that to you when the time was right." She explained still giggling.
Johnathan looked on at the two who seemed to resemble siblings. Then, Alexis got a looked at Johnathan who gave her a facial signal which she understood. She then looked at Alexander who was still smiling at his prank.
"Uhm, Lex, there's something Johnathan and I want to tell you." She said to an attentive Alexander.
"We've been in this place since we were kids and we have sort of given it a kind of devotion." Alexis began.
"Where are you getting at?" Alexander asked.
"Well what I'm trying to say is… Johnathan you tell him." Alexis said with a cute voice to Johnathan who was shocked at how she dumped the task on him.
"uh, well, what Alexis is saying is, we want to go to the human realm and start a new life you know… and we'd love it if you came with us." Johnathan concluded.
Alexander looked a bit distraught as he paced to the edge of the balcony and looked at the night sky. Both Alexis and Johnathan were waiting anxiously for what his reply would be like teenagers who had gotten in trouble with their parent.
"As tempting as that offer sounds, it wouldn't be fair to abandon the home I have here." Alexander began, to which Alexis was trying to interrupt but Alexander raised a hand to signify he wasn't done.
"I support the idea of you guys starting a family in the human world, it's not safe to raise a child in these parts. I mean three days ago we lost warriors and one of them could have been any one of you." He continued.
"So, you'll come with us?" Johnathan asked. Alexander looked at him and then at Alexis.
"There are upcomers back at the house that also need people to show them the ropes the way you did to me. And what better person to train them than me, your prodigy." He said with a smile. Both Alexis and Johnathan looked at each other and then at Alexander.
"Are you sure that's what you want?" Alexis asked as she walked closer to Alexander who nodded. She instantly hugged him tight and had a bit of tears roll down her cheeks.
"I'll tell Ron to teach you about the ideals of being a house head." She said as she kissed his forehead.
"So, when are you both leaving?" Alexander asked.
"I suggest tomorrow morning." A familiar voice came from the balcony doors, it was that of Aurora.
"I spoke to the other house heads about your departure." She continued.
"They should've been here to say their final goodbyes but apparently they are too drunk to stand." She said rolling her eyes.
"Well I'm not surprised with Feridia but Tartius? Now that's something I gotta see." Alexis said as she rushed off with Aurora leaving Alexander with Johnathan.
"Johnathan." Alexander started.
"Oh please, call me Jo." Johnathan said with a smile.
"No." Alexander replied subtly.
"Fair enough." Johnathan said.
"I just want to ask of you one thing… that you take good care of Alexis." Alexander said like a father.
Johnathan stared at him for some seconds before nodding his head and stretching his hand out for a handshake which Alexander turned into a hug; a gesture that surprised Johnathan.
