After a half-day of adjustments and a quick nap, He Kui and Shi He rose early the next morning and headed to the mess hall.
"Great job," He Kui greeted with nods as he acknowledged the salutes from green-clad soldiers and some red-clad personnel along the way. He grabbed a few energy bars and returned to one of the preparation rooms used by the officers before departure.
The room still exuded a cold metallic feel, but there was a pot of pale purple flowers on the table, though he couldn't tell if they were real or artificial.
"I was hoping for some Earth food," He Kui sighed as he looked at the energy meal before him.
Although food prices in PLANT had gradually decreased recently, the lack of quality accelerators meant they couldn't transport large quantities of food.
High transportation costs kept prices elevated.
But that wasn't the main reason he couldn't enjoy a hearty meal.
With the imminent operation, he couldn't eat too much or too well.
Otherwise, he might end up sick in his helmet.
Thinking this, He Kui forced the unpalatable energy bars into his mouth. Staying focused during a battle was crucial, and these energy bars contained stimulants that would come in handy.
Once he finished his meal, He Kui changed into the white pilot suit designated for him.
This suit was similar to the one worn by Kuroze, but he imagined Kuroze could easily take him down with just one hand.
The outside world was dangerous.
He needed to finish the weapon tests as quickly as possible and return home to take on his role as the rightful director.
Was this considered setting a flag for himself?
Lost in his thoughts, He Kui approached the deep blue Sig, where Shi He was already waiting. She looked striking in her fitted red pilot suit, which accentuated her figure, and her long brown hair was tied back with a light pink headband.
She looked completely different from her usual gentle demeanor.
"He Kui, the mission briefing has come in," Shi He said with an excited smile, pulling out a compact device from her military uniform pocket, which was much smaller than a phone but similarly equipped with a screen.
"Mission time is set for 1000 hours."
Since regular phones and wrist devices didn't work here, they had to rely on military communication devices for information.
"There's a squad of red-clad soldiers accompanying us. They don't have a specific name but seem to be part of a special operations group."
"It looks like the Defense Council is taking this test quite seriously."
The red-clad special operations team would likely possess skill levels comparable to Shi He's. With their mutual coordination, taking on four or five Mobius squadrons would be manageable.
Unbeknownst to him, He Kui was starting to enjoy privileges similar to those that Sule had once afforded him. Of course, this privilege likely stemmed from concerns that He Kui might become a liability if the cooling system wasn't completed in time.
"As long as we complete the tests," He Kui stated.
Although they had fired two low-energy test shots in the internal testing facility yesterday, the reliability under high power output could only be fully verified on the battlefield.
"Right!"
As they spoke, the communication channel crackled with static, and a deep male voice came through.
"Is this Director He Kui?"
"Yes, it is."
"Hello, we are the escort team for this mission. I'm the captain, code-named 'Iron Wall.' We will be responsible for your safety throughout the operation, so please rest assured."
"Thank you."
At that moment, two standard Kinn units, one reconnaissance Kinn, and one Sig approached steadily down the dedicated path to the preparation point where He Kui was stationed.
The Sig was, of course, the "Iron Wall," while the other squad members remained silent, and He Kui didn't feel the need to ask further.
As the time reached exactly 1000 hours, all four machines powered up their engines simultaneously.
Fine lunar dust was kicked up by the engines' thrust, and the single red light on the Sig illuminated, locking onto their target coordinates in the data.
"Director He, can your beam weapon Sig serve as a support shooter?"
"No problem."
After his confirmation, the captain of the Iron Wall cut off the communication.
"Is this your first time flying in a zero-gravity environment, He Kui?"
Shi He asked, gazing out at the vast lunar surface and the rapidly receding scenery.
"Yeah."
The speed of the unit was visibly faster than on Earth, but this did not affect He Kui's state of mind. Thanks to the stimulants, he felt more focused than usual.
"Considering inertia and the power system, we've made the appropriate adjustments. However, the data indicates that the dust may be denser, so I'll adjust the systems as you fire."
"Alright."
After flying for a considerable distance, the squad descended to a small crater for cover, as indicated by the reconnaissance Kinn.
"Estimated time to target is fifteen minutes. Delta 4, activate the neutron jammers on my command."
"Understood."
As He Kui held his breath, he felt that the fifteen minutes dragged on, but in reality, it passed in the blink of an eye.
"Six Mobius units detected, distance one thousand."
The reconnaissance Kinn reported.
"Targets appearing. We will enter the engagement zone in ten seconds. Activate the neutron jammers."
"Understood. All units, proceed according to plan."
"Copy that."
In perfect unison, the countdown concluded, and the two Kinn units and the Sig launched from three different angles to encircle their targets.
The experimental beam weapon unit lagged behind at the previously scouted high ground.
As the two forces clashed, Shi He completed the target locking procedure.
"Fire!"
At Shi He's command, a deadly green beam shot out from the barrel, slicing through the wing of one of the Mobius units. As the barrel expelled a large amount of gas, it created a surreal yet threatening effect, making the deep blue Sig appear as a harbinger of death from the underworld.
Caught off guard by the sudden appearance of the small beam weapon, the enemy was stunned for a moment. In that brief instant, the Sig seized the opportunity and opened fire with its machine gun, taking down one Mobius unit.
"Firing angle slightly offset due to the unit's kinetic energy not being fully accounted for. Minor fluctuations detected in range calibration and energy supply management. Stand by."
While inputting data on the keyboard, He Kui noted that the five remaining Mobius units, realizing they had been ambushed, didn't engage in combat but instead turned to retreat, only to be ensnared by the Kinn units that had appeared from behind.
"It's ready."
"Good!"
Another beam shot out, this time accurately striking a Mobius unit's wing. After a silent explosion, the enemy was instantly reduced to a cloud of dust on the Moon's surface.
"Test successful. Feel free to fire at will."
"Understood!"
Shi He quickly joined the Iron Wall squad in their assault against the remaining Mobius units.
Meanwhile, He Kui observed Shi He's performance while keeping an eye on his virtual interface.
To his surprise, Shi He's favorability toward him had increased by three points, reaching an impressive level of one hundred twenty-six.
This
wasn't too surprising, as the beam weapon she had longed for had essentially achieved basic success, and her excitement was entirely natural.
