Capítulo 98: 98. Alex's Baby

Friday, December 8 - Saturday, December 9, 2017 (pregnancy week 40)

Today was Alex and Maggie’s due date, and the pair of them were sulking on the couch, eating junk food and watching a movie.  Yesterday was their appointment with Dr. Landry, and according to her, neither of them showed any signs of the beginnings of giving birth.  They had hoped that that would change by today, but it hadn’t yet.  Thus, the sulking.  They were ready for their baby girls, but neither of them wanted the increased labor pains of being induced, so they just waited.  To add insult to injury, so to speak, they had both been threatened within an inch of their lives by each of their bosses if they didn’t start their maternity leaves this week, whether they showed labor signs or not.  The pair suspected that Kara might have had something to do with that, but they couldn’t prove it, and they all denied it.

On the bright side, they were getting some great quality time together.  There were a few movies that had come out that they wanted to watch, and it was a perfect excuse to check them off the list while Kara, Lena and the kids couldn’t object to them being gory or badly executed.  Alex and Maggie loved action and horror flicks - both epic and cheesy - so they had binged watched as many as they could get away with in the last four days, even slipping in some old favorites here and there just for the hell of it.

Lena, for her part, just stayed upstairs and nursed, trying to sneak in some sleep here and there.  Alex knew from experience how exhausting it was to nurse Kryptonian twins, so she was trying to be as supportive as possible.  She and Maggie would periodically head upstairs and sit with her and cuddle her if she wasn’t nursing.  They would bring her food and help her eat if she needed the help, and they would interact with their sons.

Their boys were three weeks old, and were both able to smile now, and they absolutely loved it when anyone paid attention to them.  They were fond of people making faces at them, especially their big sisters, and they loved to be talked to or sung to.  They were absolutely adorable when they smiled.  This week, they’d started to fight off sleep, making them a little fussier than they’d started out being, but somehow Kara had a magic touch and a knack for getting them to settle down.  However, once they were out, they were starting to sleep a little longer.  It was only in small increments at a time, but it made Lena feel a bit relieved.

Lyra was there with them every day from the time Kara left for work to the time she came home.  After that, the family took over the care of Lena and the babies.  That way, the kids could still do their schooling, and Alex and Maggie weren’t overwhelmed by things to do when they should be resting.  But Maggie and Alex tried not to neglect Lena, now that they were off work.

Usually, Alura would be with them as well, but this week she was hanging out with Cat during the day to see if they couldn’t piece together an interview for Catco magazine.  Cat didn’t think anyone else could do it justice.  At least, that’s what she claimed.  Alex had a suspicion that Cat was starting to get bored without a job, and that the ex-CEO was just looking for something to do until she decided what to do next with her life.  Lena and Sam had discussed offering her a position at L-Corp in PR, but they hadn’t brought it up to Cat yet.  In the meantime, the interview gave Cat and Alura some bonding time.

It was getting close to lunchtime, so Alex and Maggie pulled together to make something for everyone to eat.  When the twins’ history tutor left, the girls wandered into the kitchen and gave their mothers hugs and kisses and offered to help cook.  The four of them chit-chatted as they worked together to make their meal.  Apparently, the history tutor was really good at making lessons interesting, and the girls were really enjoying her teaching them.  It was a far cry from the complaints Alex and Kara had gotten from them when they were still in school.  Alex was extremely happy about that.

When lunch was almost ready, Jamie headed upstairs to ask Lena if she wanted to join them.  The new mother was sitting in bed, rocking Jack back and forth, and singing softly to him.  The infant was making little happy noises as she did so, flailing his little arms around joyfully.

“Aww, he’s trying to sing with you,” Jamie grinned.

Lena looked up at her with a smile on her face.  “Look, your big sister is here!” Lena told Jack.  “Say, ‘hi, sissy!’”  She waved his tiny hand in Jamie’s direction.

“Hi, little brother!” Jamie greeted him.  “Sissy loves you!”  She gave them each a kiss, then looked around the room and saw Joel in his bassinet, but Lyra wasn’t in the room.  “Where’s Lyra?” she asked.

“In the bathroom,” Lena replied.

“Oh, OK.  Lunch is almost finished, would you like to come eat with us?” Jamie asked.

Lena nodded.  “Yes, that would be nice.”

Jamie opened her arms to take Jack while Lena got up and washed her face and ran a brush through her hair.  Lyra returned, and Lena grabbed Joel before they all headed downstairs to eat.

“Lena!” Jessie cheered.

“Hi, baby,” Maggie greeted.

“Hey, sweetheart,” Alex grinned.

“Hello, my darlings,” Lena replied, giving each of them kisses.

“I’m glad you felt up to joining us,” Alex told her.  “How are you feeling?”

Lena shrugged.  “I’m OK for the most part.”

Jessie crept up and stole Joel away from Lena, so Alex took the opportunity to give Lena a big hug.  Of course, Maggie was not to be left out, and hugged Lena too.

“Any signs of labor yet?” Lena asked.

Alex and Maggie shook their heads in dismay.

“Aww, I’m sorry, loves,” Lena pouted in sympathy.  “I can’t imagine how frustrated you both are.  I know how excited you are to meet our baby girls.  You’ll get there.  Just hang on.”

Alex held back a sarcastic comment.  Yes, she was frustrated, but she didn’t need to take it out on poor Lena.  “We will,” she said instead.  “Let’s eat, hmm?”

“Yes, please,” Lena replied, helping to take everything they needed into the dining room.

The twin girls placed their little brothers in the bassinet next to them, and the boys seemed content to just lay next to each other for the time being.  They were still too little to interact with each other, but they seemed to know when they were laying together, and that helped soothe them when they were fussy… sometimes.

The group sat down to eat.  They had made chicken burritos, and everyone was excited to dig in.  Lena lacked the usual decorum that she usually ate with, both too tired and too hungry to care about uppity manners at the moment.  Not that she was being a slob, but with the threat of a crying baby at any moment, she was eating rather quickly.  Alex didn’t blame her one bit.  For the time being, sitting at the table and eating lunch was a bit of a luxury for the new mother, and she needed to eat a lot in order to keep up her strength.

“Thank you all for taking such good care of me,” Lena said seriously.  “I couldn’t handle this without you.”

The twins both gave Lena hugs and kisses since they were the ones on either side of her.  “We have to take care of you,” Jessie told her.  “We love you.”

“I love you too,” Lena replied, blinking away a stray tear.

“Plus, it is kind of our fault,” Jamie admitted.

Jessie scoffed.  “Our fault?  I didn’t do it!  I didn’t even know about it!”

“Fine!” Jamie groaned.  “ My fault.”

“That’s not important anymore,” Lena insisted.  “Yes, you did something wrong, but that doesn’t mean I love you or the babies any less.  Just please, please, never do that again.”

“I won’t,” Jamie swore.

When the six of them finished eating, they all pitched in to help clean up, then they all retired to the living room for a bit.  The boys were sleeping peacefully for once, so Alex and Maggie sat on either side of Lena to share some cuddles.  Lyra and the twins sat together on one of the adjacent couches and discussed what they could watch on TV until the next tutor arrived.  Alex was about to make a suggestion of her own, but before she could get the words out, her breath was stolen by a huge lower-abdominal cramp.

“Fuck!” she exclaimed, holding her belly.

“Are you OK, Mommy?” Jamie and Jessie squeaked.

“Was that a contraction?” Maggie asked at the same time.

“Uh…  Maybe?” Alex replied.  “It feels a little different than last time, though.”

“I’ll keep track,” Jessie volunteered excitedly.

Maggie pouted at her belly.  “Come on, little one.  It’s our turn.”

Everyone looked at her for a moment as though saying those words would magically make something happen, but it didn’t.  A few seconds later, they could hear someone coming in the front door.

Jamie ran to see who it was.  “Grandmother!   Cat!” Jamie called out.  “Mom might be having her baby!”

“Oh, really?” Alura grinned.  “Good deal!”

“That’s wonderful to hear,” Cat agreed.  “I know she’s been impatiently waiting for this.”

They entered the living room and gave the Danvers hugs and kisses.

“How’s the interview going?” Alex asked.

“Splendidly,” Cat replied.  “I think I have enough to tell an amazing story.”

“Cool.”

“Yes, Cat is quite the eloquent writer,” Alura commented.  “I think people are really going to love it.  At least, I hope they do.”

“I still don’t think it’s a good idea,” Maggie frowned.  “There are still Fort Rozz aliens all over this planet.  They’re going to come after you.”

“Kara and I will deal with them,” Alura assured her.  “I’m no pushover.”

“I know, but I worry,” Maggie said.

Alura sat down next to Maggie and pulled her into a hug.  “Thank you for caring, but try to think positively.  This house is as safe as it gets.  No one is going to harm you or your children.  I promise.”

“I’m worried about you too,” Maggie admitted.  “Yes, you have powers, but so do these criminals.”

“Would it make you feel any better to read the story before it goes out?” Cat offered.

Maggie shrugged.  “Maybe.  I don’t know.  I just know that we can’t lose Alura.  Kara can’t lose you again.”

“I know, sweetie.  But I think it would be best to draw these criminals out and deal with them, rather than letting them continue to reign terror down on Earth,” Alura replied.

“Just be careful, please,” Maggie begged.

“We will,” Alura promised.  “We have Julia who can help, and I’m sure Sam would help if we really needed her to.  Plus the DEO and Lyra and Mon-El.  I’m confident we can handle whatever comes our way.”

Maggie nodded.  “OK.”

A few seconds later, the doorbell rang.

“That’s Justin,” Jamie announced, going to answer the door.

“Who?” Cat frowned.

“Our science tutor,” Jessie explained.

“Oh,” Cat replied.  “Well, I have some things I need to do that I’ve been neglecting for a few days, so I’ll see you all later.  Lots of love.  Keep me posted on the baby!”

“OK!  Bye, Cat!” everyone called after her as she headed out the door.

Jessie and Jamie kissed their family and gave Lyra a hug before heading into the Solarium for their lessons with their tutor.

“Joel will be waking up soon,” Lena commented after checking the time.  “Hopefully they don’t wake up at the same time.”

“Should we take them upstairs?” Lyra inquired.

Lena nodded.  “Yes, I’m not going to give Justin an eyeful.”

Alura chuckled.  “May I come upstairs with you?”

“Of course,” Lena replied.  She and Lyra scooped up the babies and took them upstairs, leaving Alex and Maggie to go back to their movies.

“The Hills Have Eyes?” Alex suggested.

Maggie nodded.  “Yeah, let’s do it.”

The movie had barely started when Alex had another contraction.  “Fuck,” Alex panted.  “That was barely a half an hour.”

“Come on, baby girl,” Maggie urged her belly.  “We can’t let Alex win.”

Alex laughed.  “Oh, it’s a race now?”

“Hell yeah,” Maggie replied with a smirk.

“Well, I’m definitely winning this one,” Alex challenged.

“Seriously, though, I’m ready to have my baby now,” Maggie grumbled.

“It’ll happen,” Alex assured her.  “She can’t stay in there forever.”

Maggie rubbed her baby bump.  “I guess you’re right,” she sighed.  “I’m just impatient because Lena already had the boys three weeks ago, and it feels like the girls should be here by now.”

“I know, honey,” Alex scratched at the nape of Maggie’s neck.  “They’ll come in their own time.”

Maggie closed her eyes and leaned into Alex’s touch.  “That feels nice.”

Alex smiled and gave her wife a bit of a scalp massage until they got caught up in their movie again.  By the time the movie was over, Alex had had three more contractions.  They called Jessie in to give a quick update on the times, and the last ones were 24 minutes apart.

“Wow, this is going really fast,” Alex exclaimed.

“I’m calling Kara,” Maggie announced.  She pulled out her phone and dialed the reporter’s number.

“Hi, honey bunny!” Kara answered the phone chipperly.  “Please tell me you’re calling because you’re in labor.  I’m bored.”

“Well, you’re in luck.  I’m not in labor, but Alex is,” Maggie told her.

“Woohoo!” Kara cheered.  “I’ll be home soon.  Love you!”

“OK, love you too,” Maggie replied, ending the call.  “I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t fly here,” she chuckled.

Sure enough, Kara showed up in her suit about thirty seconds later.  “I’m here!” she called as she came in.  She gave Maggie and Alex kisses and then knelt at Alex’s feet.  “Hi, baby, how are you, huh?”

“I’ve had a bunch of contractions this afternoon already,” Alex answered.  “I’m a little surprised at that, but I am ready to have this baby.”

Kara grinned and gave Alex another kiss.  “I’m so excited!”

“Maggie’s a little pissed,” Alex informed her.

“I’m not pissed that you’re having your baby, I’m pissed that I’m not having mine too,” Maggie clarified.

“Oh, God, please don’t have your babies at the same time!” Kara worried.

“No promises,” Maggie huffed.

“Where’s my mom?” Kara wondered.

“She’s upstairs with Lena and Lyra and the boys,” Maggie replied.

“Oh, did she and Cat finish?”

Maggie and Alex nodded.

“And the twins?”

“Still with their science tutor,” Alex pointed towards the Solarium.

“Ah.  Do you mind if I go upstairs and say hi real quick?” Kara requested.

“Go ahead,” Alex permitted.  “Then, can you make us some food?  I don’t know about Maggie, but I’m hungry.”

“You got it.”  Kara gave them each another kiss and headed upstairs for a bit.

Maggie laced her fingers through Alex’s.  “Hey, do you think…  If I’m not in labor when you have your baby, could I maybe be there when you do?”  Kara got to be there for both sets of twins’ births.  I’d like to share that experience with you this time.”

Alex smiled.  “I would love that, but keep in mind that I might not be able to return the favor.”

“That’s OK,” Maggie assured her.  “You don’t think Kara will be upset, do you?”

“Maybe a little disappointed, but not upset,” Alex replied.  “She’ll understand.  She’s sweet like that.”

Maggie nodded.  “OK.  I’ll double-check with her when she comes back.”

“You do that,” Alex agreed.  “You want to watch another movie?”

Maggie checked the time.  “Nah.  We’re going to get interrupted if we do.”

“OK.  How about a kiss?”

“Mmm, that sounds nice.”  Maggie leaned over and gave her wife a nice long kiss.  “I love you, Alex.”

“I love you too, Mags,” Alex responded.  “So much.”  They kissed again.  “Our girls are almost here.  Can you believe it?”

“It’s surreal as hell,” Maggie chuckled.  “I just can’t stop wondering what they’re going to look like.”

“They’re gonna be so beautiful,” Alex grinned a little teary-eyed.

“With you guys as mothers, how could they not be?” Kara added as she returned, once again in her regular clothes.  “There’s no one more beautiful than my wives on any planet anywhere, any time.”

“Thanks, Angel,” Alex smiled at her.

“What would you guys like to eat?” Kara asked them.

“I’ll eat anything you put in front of me right now to be honest,” Alex replied.

“I’m kinda craving a BLT right now,” Maggie told her.

“Oh, yes!” Alex agreed.  “That sounds great.”

“BLT’s for my babies,” Kara sang.  “Coming up.”

Alex and Maggie followed the Kryptonian into the kitchen and sat at the island counter.  “Probably better make a couple for Lena too,” Alex suggested.  “She looked like she was half-starved at lunch today.”

“Got it,” Kara nodded.  She supersped through chopping up the lettuce and tomato, leaving her free to tend to the bacon while she fried it up.

“God, that smells goo-  Ahh!”  Alex didn’t get to finish her sentence because another contraction ripped through her abdomen.  This one left tears in her eyes.

“Oh, honey,” Kara soothed, giving her a hug.  “I’m sorry.  I wish labor didn’t hurt you guys so much.  I would gladly take away the pain, if I could.”

“I know, Angel,” Alex panted.  “It’s OK.  You do your part.”

“Mommy, are you OK?” the twins asked, coming from behind them.

“I’m OK, babies,” Alex assured them.

“How far apart are the contractions?” Kara wanted to know.

“Twenty-three minutes,” Jessie replied.

“Are you guys all done for the day?” Maggie asked the girls.

The twins nodded.  “Yeah, Justin just left.”

“I recommend that you girls get as much homework done tonight as you can,” Alex told them.  “That way you don’t have to worry about it when the baby arrives.”

“Can we do it in here?” Jessie begged.

“Yes, just don’t get food all over your books and stuff,” Alex permitted.

“OK,” the kids agreed happily, running to grab their laptops and textbooks.

“Hello, my darlings,” Alura greeted them from the doorway.  “Lena is taking a nap, so I thought I’d come down and check on Alex.”

“I’m OK,” Alex informed her.  “Just had another contraction.  We’re at 23 minutes apart.”

“Oh my, that’s much faster than Lena,” Alura frowned in concern.  “Is that still considered normal for a human?”

Kara nodded.  “Every pregnancy is different, of course.  The baby looks good right now, so as far as I can tell, there’s no cause for alarm.”

“Her heartbeat does sound strong,” Alura confirmed.  “It’s so strange how similar Kryptonians and humans are and yet we’re so different.”

Kara chuckled.  “Yeah, when Alex found out about me becoming an alpha , she was pretty surprised.  She took it all in stride, though.  I guess she figured that since I was an alien, then there would be a few surprises.”

“More or less,” Alex chuckled.  “I was so far gone in love with you by then, though.  You could have grown scales and tentacles, and I still would have wanted to be with you.”

Kara giggled.

“Is it rude to ask someone if they’re an alpha or not?” Maggie wondered.

Alura cocked her head to the side and furrowed her brow a bit.  “Well, no.  Kryptonians can smell that sort of thing right away, so it’s kind of a moot point.”

“But what if a human was curious?” Maggie prodded.  “We can’t smell that kind of thing.”

Kara stage whispered to her mother, “I think she wants to know if you’re an alpha, beta, or omega.”

“Oh!” Alura chuckled.  “Yes, I’m an alpha .”

“So Zor-El was an omega?” Maggie continued.

“Mm-hmm,” Alura nodded.

“So… Zor-El gave birth to Kara?”

“Yes.”

Maggie and Alex blinked at each other.  “Wow, that’s kind of a mind-fuck,” Maggie gasped.

“Yeah, that’s really weird,” Jamie commented.  “How does a man give birth to a baby?”

“I’ll give you the official lesson later,” Alura offered.  “It’s not really dinner table conversation.”

“Oh, OK,” Jamie replied.  “I changed my mind.  I don’t wanna know.”

“I still do,” Jessie said.

Kara presented Maggie and Alex with the first of the BLT’s.  “Here you go, my loves.  Eat up.”

“Mmm, thank you, Angel,” Alex said, taking a huge bite of her sandwich.

“Thank you, Kara,” Maggie muttered around a mouthful.  “This is really good.”

“You’re welcome,” Kara said over her shoulder as she continued frying bacon and toasting bread for the sandwiches.

“Mama, can I have one?” Jessie begged.

“Yes, baby.  Mom , Jamie, do you want one too?” Kara asked.

“Heck yes,” Jamie replied.

“Sure, I’ll try it,” Alura nodded.  “I like bacon.”

Kara grinned.  “Who doesn’t?”

“Julia,” the twins said in unison, then giggled.

“Touche,” Kara chuckled.  “I mean, vegans aside.  Girls, will you go see if Lyra wants to come down and join us?” she requested.

“OK,” the twins replied, hopping up from their seats and heading upstairs.

“Here you go, Mom ,” Kara handed Alura her own BLT.

“Thank you, sweetie.”  Alura took an experimental bite of her sandwich and smiled.  “Oh, this is tasty.”

“Glad you like it,” Kara grinned.

The twins returned shortly with Lyra in tow.  “Hello again,” the Valerian greeted them.

“Hey, here, have a snack,” Kara said, shoving a plate at her.

“Ooh, thank you,” Lyra hummed.  “This is just what I needed.”

Alex was just about to ask for another sandwich when another contraction tore through her.  They were getting increasingly painful, and this one made her cry.  Kara wrapped her up in her arms and rocked her until she calmed down.  Alex sniffled and wiped the tears from her eyes, keeping Kara close with her other arm.  “This hurts a lot more than I remember,” she complained.

Kara kissed her sweetly.  “I’m sorry, baby.  I’m here.”

“Oh, that reminds me,” Maggie spoke up.  “Would it be OK with you if I stayed with Alex at the hospital?  I want to see her baby being born.  I’ve never had that experience before, and I want to.”

Kara bit her lip.  “If you think you can handle it, then yes, I can let you do that.”

“If I end up getting too tired or in pain, I’ll call you, but I’d really like to be there,” Maggie told her.

“OK, honey.”  Kara handed Maggie and Alex another BLT each.  “I’m just a phone call away.”

“I know, thank you,” Maggie smiled.  “I appreciate it.”

“Grandma’s on her way,” Jessie announced.  “She just got out of work, and she says she wishes someone would have told her that her daughter was in labor.”

Kara’s face looked stricken with guilt.  “Oops.”

“No, that’s my bad,” Alex soothed her.  “I should have called her after the first contraction.”

“You should have done the same for me,” Kara chided her.

“I’m sorry, I got distracted,” Alex pouted.

“It’ll be OK,” Kara assured her.  “She’s not really missing anything yet.”  She continued to work on the food until she’d made enough for everyone.  She didn't fix Eliza’s or Lena’s plates yet because she didn’t want them to get soggy while they sat waiting.

“Mom, can I have a soda?” Jessie asked.

“Yes, baby,” Alex allowed.  It wasn’t like it hurt them anymore, and caffeine didn’t affect Kryptonians in general.  “Don’t spill it on your electronics, or you’ll be in trouble.”

“I won’t,” Jessie promised.

“Ooh, can I have one too?” Jamie asked as well.

“Yes, baby,” Alex repeated.

The twins scrambled to the fridge and dug out their favorite sodas.  Jamie was quite fond of cherry Coke, but Jessie prefered Mountain Dew.  “Thank you, Mommy,” they both chanted.

“You’re welcome.”  Alex finished her second sandwich and decided a soda didn’t sound so bad.  She grabbed an orange one for herself and a grape one for Maggie.  “Here, honey.”

Maggie grinned.  “You read my mind.”

“I try,” Alex quipped.

Kara looked up towards the ceiling, “Lena’s waking up.”

“Want me to go get her?” Jessie offered.

“In a few minutes,” Kara replied.  “Let her wake up first.”

The group sat in amicable silence for a few minutes while they ate before Jessie asked again, “Now should I go get her?”

“Yeah, OK,” Kara permitted.  “Don’t wake the babies up.”

“OK.”  Jessie headed upstairs to get her step mother.

“I wanna come too,” Jamie said, following her sister.

When the twins arrived at the master bedroom, they knocked softly on the door and waited for a response.

“Come in,” Lena called.

Jessie poked her head in, “Hi, Mama Lena.  Are you hungry?  Mama made BLTs for everyone.”

Lena nodded.  “Yes, I’m starving.”

“You wanna come downstairs and eat with us?” Jamie inquired.

Lena nodded again.  “Yes, but be very careful not to wake the boys up.  They didn’t want to go to sleep for me earlier.”

“OK.”  Jessie and Jamie picked up the babies slowly and delicately, so they wouldn’t wake them up, and carefully carried them downstairs alongside Lena.  When they returned, they put the boys in the bassinet in the living room, so the group didn’t make too much noise and wake them.  There were enough people around with super hearing that could keep an ear out for them in case they started fussing.

The group moved to the dining room where there was more room for all of them.  Kara gave Lena a couple of BLTs, and sat down at the table with the others.  Lena hummed in appreciation of the food, once again eating faster than she normally would.  Alex’s heart ached at how hard it must be for her right now.  Lucy had talked to them about helping her nurse, and Alex was all for it.  She just wanted to give birth first.

It wasn’t long before Alex had another contraction.  She whimpered and cried as Kara held her and reminded her to breathe through the pain.

“Still 23 minutes,” Jessie announced.

“Hello?” came a voice from the foyer.  “Where is everyone?”

Jessie used her superspeed to run into the other room.  “Hi, Grandma!” she greeted cheerfully with hugs and kisses.  “We’re in the dining room.”  She walked beside Eliza to the back of the house and then sat back down at the table.

“Hello, everyone,” Eliza waved.

Everyone returned her greetings.

“How’s my girl?” she asked, stroking Alex’s head.

Alex leaned into the touch.  “I’m OK,” she muttered.  “These contractions are kicking my ass, though.  I can take a hit from a super powered alien and just shake it off, but this isn’t like that.  They’re coming fast and hard and painful as hell.  I wouldn’t be surprised if I had this baby tonight.”

“I’m sorry you’re in pain, but I’m happy for you that you’re finally able to give birth,” Eliza soothed.  “I know you’ve been feeling frustrated that you haven’t been able to meet your little girl yet.”  She turned to the detective, “Maggie, have you felt anything yet?”

“Just the baby kicking my ribs, as usual,” the Latina grumbled.

Eliza pouted in sympathy.  “I’m sorry, sweetie.  She’ll get here soon enough.  Don’t worry.”

“I know,” Maggie sighed.  “I’m just impatient.”

“Are you hungry?” Kara asked Eliza.  “I made BLTs.”

“Sure, I’d love one.  Thank you, dear,” Eliza smiled.

As Kara went to get Eliza a sandwich, Eliza stole her seat next to Alex.  “I’m here, sweetie.”

Alex laced her fingers with her mom’s in appreciation.  “I’m glad, Mom.”

“Do you guys need me to stay longer today?” Lyra offered.  “I can, if you do.”

The Danvers looked around at each other before Kara answered, “I don’t think that’ll be necessary, but thank you, Lyra.  We really appreciate all that you do for us.”

Lyra grinned.  “It’s my pleasure.  I’m quite fond of you all.”

“Likewise, friend,” Lena told her.

“I should get out of your hair,” Lyra excused herself.  “Call me if you need me, if not, I’ll see you on Monday.”

Everyone waved her out with well wishes and gratitude.

When all the Danvers were through eating, Kara and the twins cleaned up, while Lena, Maggie, Alex, Eliza, and Alura went into the living room to relax and check on the boys.  The babies were still sleeping, but they all knew they were like little ticking timebombs ready to go off at the slightest disturbance, so they kept their voices low as they talked.  That being said, Alex decided that this probably wasn’t the best place for her.

“I think I’m gonna go upstairs and rest, so I’m not disturbing the babies when I’m having contractions,” she announced.  “You wanna come with me, Mags?”

“Yeah,” Maggie nodded and stood up behind her.

“Love you guys,” Alex waved at the others.

“Love you too,” they replied.

Alex and Maggie headed upstairs and laid down in the sun room, snuggled close together.  Alex gave Maggie a tender kiss.  “I love you so much, Maggie.”

“I love you too, Alex,” Maggie returned, giving her wife another kiss.  “I hope you know how much you mean to me.  You’re the best thing to ever happen to me, and I’m so happy that we get to share our lives together and that we get to raise our kids together.  You’re such a good mom.  I’m looking forward to meeting our baby girl tonight.  She’s gonna love you so much.”

Alex nuzzled Maggie’s nose with her own.  “She’s gonna love you too.  How could she not?”

“I really hope so.  I think it would break my heart, if she didn’t.”

“She will,” Alex assured her with another kiss.  “Yo- OW!”  Another contraction seared through her before she could finish speaking.  She sobbed through the pain while Maggie gently soothed her.

When it was over, Maggie wiped the tears from Alex’s face.  “You know, it’s not really very reassuring that labor pains are something that can take down the unflappable Alex Danvers.”

Alex nodded.  “It’s no picnic, that’s for sure.  But honestly, once you get that baby in your arms, you forget all about it.”

Maggie smiled.  “I just hope my labor doesn’t take days like Lena’s did.”

“Yeah, poor Lena,” Alex agreed with a yawn.  “I think I’m gonna try to sleep a little bit.”

“OK,” Maggie acknowledged with one more kiss.  “Sweet dreams, my love.”

Deeply soothed by being in Maggie’s arms, Alex fell asleep quickly out of sheer exhaustion.  She was able to sleep for roughly an hour, despite having three more contractions.  After the last one, though, she was awake.  Maggie was still there, holding her hand, and at first Alex thought she was sleeping too, but as soon as she started sitting up, Maggie acknowledged her.

“Are you getting up, or are you just going to the bathroom?”

“I’m up,” Alex replied.  “I’d like to rejoin the group, are you with me?”

“I’m with you,” Maggie smiled and followed Alex back downstairs.

“Mommy!” the twins cheered.

“Hi, babies,” Alex smiled at them.  “Are you guys ready for a new baby sister?”

“Yes!” they clapped and scooted apart, so Alex could sit between them.

“What’s my time?” Alex asked, sitting down and putting her arms around them.

“The last one timed out at just under 20 minutes,” Jessie replied.

“Whew, no wonder it hurts so bad.  Kara, did you call Dr. Landry?”

“Yes,” Kara nodded.  “I called her when you were upstairs.”

“Thank you, Angel.  How’s it going down here?”

“Good,” the twins answered.  “We just finished our homework.”

“All of it?” Alex checked.

The girls nodded.

“Good girls.  Superspeed for the win, right?  What’s for dinner?”

“We ordered Chinese food,” Jessie informed her.

“Oh, cool.  What’d you get me?”

“We got you three things to choose from - kung pao chicken, sesame chicken, and sweet and sour chicken.

Alex smiled.  “Mmm, all my favorites, yum.  Thank you.”

“Were you able to sleep at all?” Eliza asked.

“Yeah, a little, thanks to Maggie,” Alex replied.  “Her cuddles do me wonders.”

Eliza smiled appreciatively at her daughter-in-law.

“Jacky is awake, if you want to say hi,” Lena told her.

“I don’t think it’s safe for me to hold them, but I would like to say hi,” Alex pursed her lips in thought.

“Here, Jamie can hold him for you,” Lena offered, holding the baby out for her step-daughter to take him.

Jamie scooped up the baby and sat back down next to their mother.  “Look who’s here!  It’s Mama Alex!  Yeah!”

“Hi, Jacky!” Alex grinned and tucked her finger into his hand.  “Mommy Alex loves you.  Who’s our good boy, huh?”

Jack smiled at her and made a happy little noise while shaking her finger around.

“You’re such a handsome little man.  You’re going to sleep for Mommy Lena tonight, right?” Alex continued as he cooed away at her.  “Mommy needs her rest.  Mama Alex is gonna have your sister tonight.  Well, hopefully.  That’s right.  You’ll have a new sister tomorrow.  But you won’t get to meet her until she comes home, OK?  Then Mama Maggie is gonna have your other sister hopefully very soon after that.  Aren’t you excited?”

“Say, ‘We’re amped up, Mama Alex!’” Jamie spoke for the baby.  “Hooray!”

Alex giggled.  “You’re gonna be a good brother, aren’t you?  I think you will.”

Jack flailed in his big sister’s arms, letting out a squeal.

“Shh!  Don’t wake your brother up,” Alex soothed.  “I really wish I could hold you right now, but I’m afraid I’ll hurt you when I have a contraction.  You’ll forgive me, won’t you, buddy?”

Jack made another happy noise at her and she kissed his tiny hand.  She talked to him for a while more before he started getting tired again, making him cranky.  Jamie tried to rock him, but he wasn’t having it.

“Let me,” Kara offered,  getting up and taking the baby from her dark-haired daughter.  She cradled him against her chest and made a shushing noise before singing a Kryptonian lullabye to him.  At first, he didn’t respond to it, but after a bit of rocking and more singing, he started to quiet down.  Not quite sleeping, but getting there.

“Witchcraft,” Lena chuckled.  “It’s not a lullabye she sings, it’s a magical enchantment.”

Kara giggled.  “I think it’s just because I’m extra warm.”

“Ah.  Science.  Excellent,” Lena said in a posh accent.  “Then I need not burn you at the stake.”

“They’ve already tried that,” Kara joked.  “Didn’t work.”

“Witch!” Lena pointed an accusing finger at her.

“That’s Super Witch to you!” Kara retorted.

The twins fell into a fit of giggles, but they kept their hands over their mouths to try and keep from waking the babies.  When they settled down, they explained that they had recently learned about the Salem Witch Trials, so it was more relevant than they realized.

“I’d like to go try to take a nap,” Lena announced.

“OK, sweetheart,” Kara said softly.  “We’ll look after the boys.  Don’t worry about a thing.”

Lena took a deep breath, and let it out slowly.  “OK.”  With one last look of longing at the boys, she headed upstairs.

Jack was almost asleep when Alex let loose a howl, waking him and his brother up.  The twins held her hands through the contraction, while Kara and Eliza tried to calm the babies down.  Of course, that’s when the gate buzzer went off as well.  Maggie answered the coms and opened the gate for the delivery guy, then she and Alura went to retrieve the food.  They brought everything back to the living room, and set it on one of the coffee tables until the chaos subsided.

After Alex managed to catch her breath, she apologized profusely.  I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” she whimpered.  “I didn’t mean to wake the boys up.”

“It’s OK, baby girl,” Kara soothed.  “It’s not your fault.”  She rocked her son back and forth, trying to calm him from being both sleepy and startled.  “It’s not her fault,” she told the baby.  She’s getting ready to have your little sister.  It’ll be OK, little one.  Shh.”

Eliza was similarly rocking and soothing Joel at the same time.  “It’s OK, little man.  You’re OK.”  Unfortunately, Joel just cried harder and harder the more time went on.  “Are you hungry?  Hmm?  So much for your mommy’s nap.”  Eliza took him upstairs to Lena to be fed.

Kara frowned, looking back and forth between the stairs and Alex.  “Um, Alex, baby, would it be OK with you if I took the babies upstairs and stayed with Lena for a bit?  I don’t want to abandon you, but I don’t want to neglect her, either.  Golly, I didn’t realize this part would be so hard.”

Alex felt bad for Kara.  The poor Kryptonian was hellbent on taking proper care of her wives, and now she was conflicted about who needed the attention most.  “It’s OK, Kara.  Just maybe take turns with who stays with Lena?  I would like you around for some of this.”

“You got it,” Kara replied seriously.  “I love you so much, Alex, and I’m so, so excited to meet our new baby.  She’s going to be amazing.”

“I love you too, Kara,” Alex returned.  “Go ahead.  I’ll see you in a bit.”

“OK,” Kara nodded, taking a still fussy Jack upstairs.

Maggie moved from the couch where she’d been sitting with Kara and Lena and sat down on the other couch with Alex and the girls.  “Why don’t you try to eat while you still can,” she suggested.

“Yeah, that’s a good idea,” Alex agreed.

The group dug into the bags of food, trying to figure out whose was whose.  Meanwhile, Eliza came down and rejoined them, claiming that Kara had sent her back down until it was her turn to sit with Lena.

“I hope Lena’s not too mad at me for waking up the babies,” Alex fretted.

Eliza tisked.  “Alex, of course she’s not mad at you.  It’s not your fault you’re in labor.”

“I know, but she’s so tired, and she wanted to take a nap.  I messed that up for her,” Alex continued.

“Sweetie, it’s fine,” Eliza promised.  “Lena is fine.  She can nap after she nurses.  It’ll be OK.  Don’t worry about it.”

“OK,” Alex conceded, though she still felt guilty.

Everyone figured out which meal was theirs, and they ate right there in the living room.  Alex chose the sesame chicken, and devoured it.  It was a little strange that she was so hungry this time around, when during her first time giving birth, she’d been too nauseated to eat much of anything until after the girls were born.  She prayed to the heavens that she wouldn’t get sick later.

When they were done eating, Alex and Maggie cuddled up with the twin girls on either side of them.  They put on Kill Bill - one of Alex’s favorite all-time movie series - to help distract her while they waited for her labor to progress.  It was something fun to pass the time, and doubly so, since it was a 2-movie story.  It was the first time the twins had ever been allowed to watch it, so Alex was enjoying seeing their reactions.  They absolutely loved it, and since it was a Friday, Alex didn’t feel bad about letting them stay up an extra hour to watch it through to the very end.  Alura, on the other hand, didn’t really like the movie and took over staying upstairs with Lena, allowing Kara to come down.

By the end of the second movie, Alex’s contractions were down to 13 minutes apart.  It was after 10 o’clock, so she sent the girls to go get ready for bed, then promised them that they could all have some ice cream as a treat/snack before bedtime.  The twins showered and dressed in their PJs, then returned to the living room just as Alex was starting another contraction, coached by Kara and Maggie.  They had heard their mother curse millions of times, but this was different.  They’d never heard her lash out in anger at anyone like this before, and it frightened them a bit to hear her screaming at their beloved parents.  Yes, Lena had done her share of screaming and cursing at some of them during her labor, but that wasn’t nearly as frightening as when Alex did it.

When the pain had subsided and Alex regained her senses, she noticed her daughters looking like deer in the headlights across the room.  “I’m sorry, you guys,” she panted.  “I’m sorry.”

The twins cautiously approached her.

“I’m sorry, girls, but sometimes the pain takes control over you when you’re having a baby,” Alex apologized again.  “I just hope this ensures that neither of you will have any babies before you're fully ready.”

The twins nodded earnestly.

“OK, you wanna go get our ice cream out, and we’ll meet you in the kitchen?” Alex asked them.

“OK.”  The twins disappeared into the kitchen and supersped around, getting out everything they’d need, so when the others joined them, they were ready.

Alex had barely eaten half of her ice cream before another contraction hit her.  She accidentally sent her bowl flying off the edge of the counter, splattering ice cream everywhere, and sending ceramic shards all over the place.  She tried to keep the swearing to a minimum for her daughters, but she couldn’t hold back her cries of pain.  The twins sprung into action, cleaning up the mess before Alex’s contraction was even over.

“Thank you, girls,” Kara said.  “I think you should hurry up and finish your ice cream, so you can go to bed.  You can come to the hospital when you wake up in the morning.”

“Aww!” the twins whined.  “We wanna stay with Mom!”

“I know, but it’s going to be a late night.  You girls need to try to sleep,” Kara insisted.  “Go on.  Put your sunbands on, so you don’t keep hearing your mom cry.”

Jessie and Jamie grumbled as they gave everyone hugs and kisses and told them goodnight.  They hugged Alex for an extra few seconds each before finally disappearing upstairs.

“That last contraction was only 8 minutes from the last one,” Kara told them.  “We’re getting really close.”

“Can I please have some more ice cream?” Alex requested.  “I wasn’t finished.”

“Of course, my love,” Kara smiled and happily got her wife more ice cream.  “Here you go.”

“Thank you,” Alex said, digging in and eating her ice cream like someone was going to take it from her at any second.

“You’re going to give yourself a brain freeze, if you’re not careful,” Eliza chuckled.

Alex shrugged.  “If I do, I do.”  She shoveled down the rest of her dessert, and surprisingly did not get a brain freeze.  “I need to lay down and rest,” she announced when she was finished.

“I think that’s a good idea for all three of you,” Eliza commented.  “I’ll clean up here.  You guys go on upstairs.”

“Thanks, Mom.”  Alex kissed her on the cheek.  “We’ll let you know when we’re going to the hospital, so you can have the option of coming along.  If you don’t want to sleep on the couch, you could always kick one of the twins out of their beds and make them sleep together.”

“Of course I’m coming, and I don’t mind the couches here.  They’re comfy,” Eliza replied.

“OK, we’ll see you later,” Kara said, kissing her mother-in-law goodnight, with Maggie following suit.

They took Alex upstairs and changed into their pajamas, laying down to rest in the sun room.  Of course, they probably wouldn’t get much sleep, but resting was still important at this point in labor to save as much strength as possible for the main event.

The next few hours went by excruciatingly slowly.  The three women slept fitfully here and there, but mostly laid awake counting down the minutes.  Kara tried turning on some music, but that ended up irritating Alex, so she turned it off.  Every contraction was coming faster now, so by the time 1am rolled around, they were finally coming under four minutes apart.

The three of them got up and started getting ready to leave.  Kara called the hospital and told them they were on their way, while Maggie went down and woke Eliza up.  Soon, the four of them were headed out the door and on their way to the hospital.

Of course, Alex had nearly forgotten about all the check-in bullshit, and she was supremely annoyed at having to answer questions while it felt like she was being turned inside out.  Then she had to wait for all the usual tests and checks that they run when a mother in labor comes in.  Thank God Maggie was there to keep her calm, or she would have ripped someone’s head off by now.  Possibly literally.

When she finally got a room, Dr. Landry came right in.  “Hello, Alex!” she greeted chipperly.  “Hi, Maggie.”

“Hey, Dr. Landry,” Maggie smiled at her.  “We’re ready for number three.”

“I guess you are, aren’t you?” Dr. Landry chuckled.  “Just a couple of hours late, not bad.  Any sign of your little one yet?”

Maggie shook her head.  “No, unfortunately not.”

“Soon, I promise,” the Dr. smiled reassuringly at her.  “Alex, would you like me to do a cervical check?”

“Yeah,” she mumbled.

“OK, let’s see here…  Oh, my.  Yes, this baby is coming right now.”

“That’s why I’m here,” Alex hissed.

“No, I mean right now, right now,” Dr. Landry clarified.

“What?” Alex screeched.  “But I haven’t even had my epidural yet!”

“No time, dear,” Dr. Landry replied, ordering the nurses around to get ready.  “A few pushes, and this little girl is gonna be outta there.”

“Oh my god, no, please,” Alex begged.

“Yep.  Come on, let’s get it over with, shall we?” Dr. Landry encouraged her.

Alex wept and bore down at the doctor’s direction, screaming in agony as she did.

“She’s crowning,” the doctor announced.  “Just a little more.”

Alex cursed at the woman, but she pushed again, and the head was almost out.

“Just a couple more, Alex, you’re doing great,” Dr. Landry continued.

Alex pushed literally two more times, and the baby was out.  The doctor cleared her airway and slapped her behind to get her to cry.  Before she handed the baby over, she let Maggie cut the umbilical cord, and then placed the crying infant in the new mother’s arms.

“Hi, baby girl,” Alex panted, stroking the baby’s cheek.  “Mommy’s here.  You have dark hair just like I wanted.  Good girl.”

The baby settled down the more Alex talked, and she eventually stopped crying altogether.

“Hi, honey,” Maggie greeted their new daughter.  “I’m your Mama Maggie.  It’s so nice to finally meet you.  You’re a pretty girl, aren’t you?  What’s her name, babe?”

“Jordan,” Alex replied.  “Jordan Avery Danvers.”

“That’s beautiful,” Maggie grinned.  “Hi, Jordan!”

The baby listened intently to their voices until the nurse had to take her away to get her cleaned up and weighed.  As soon as the nurse took her, the baby started crying again.

“It’s OK, honey,” Alex called after her.  “Mommy’s here.”

“You did so incredible,” Maggie said, toweling off some of the sweat that had built up on Alex’s face.  “I’m so proud of you.  Thank you for letting me be here for this.  It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”

Alex smiled tiredly at her wife.  “Thank you for being here.  I love you so much, Maggie.”

“I love you too, Alex,” Maggie replied with a tender kiss.  “I’m sorry you had to go through that without any drugs.”

Alex grimaced.  “Yeah, I don’t recommend it.  That was definitely the worst pain I’ve ever experienced, first pregnancy included.”

Maggie kissed her on the forehead.  “Poor thing.  It’s all over now, though.  You’re all done, and you have a perfect baby girl.”

Alex watched the nurse caring for the wailing baby across the room.  They couldn’t take the baby out of the room yet because they had to be sure she was under the red sun lamps that they’d brought specifically for Alex’s baby until they could get her cleaned up enough to put the baby red sun band on her, which Maggie had in her pocket.

After what felt like forever, but was really only a couple of minutes, the nurse brought little Jordan back and placed her in Alex’s arms to nurse.  Once she was back in Alex’s arms, Alex talked to her a little more, and she calmed down again, then allowed Maggie to attach her little baby red sun band.  Since she was familiar with nursing, Alex didn’t need to wait for the nursing coach to come in to get started.  Jordan took a moment to figure out how to latch on, but once she did, she seemed to be much happier.

Maggie smiled adoringly at them.  “I should go get Kara and your mom,” she said, kissing Alex on the head.  “I’ll be back in a sec.”

Alex softly talked to the baby some more, while Maggie went to get the others.  It was literally only a few seconds before they all came in.  Kara’s smile rivaled the sun in its brightness, and Eliza looked quite proud.  They greeted her warmly with kisses and love.

“Congratulations, sweetie,” Eliza grinned.  “You did it.  And she has dark hair, just like you wanted.  Hi, baby girl!  I’m your grandma, and I love you so much.”

Alex beamed at them.  “She’s perfect.  Bigger than I expected, but still perfect.”

“Well, she had a month longer to grow than the first four did,” Eliza reminded her.

Kara picked up the chart and read it aloud.  “Jordan Avery Danvers, born 2:13am, December 9th, 2017.  Six pounds, eleven ounces, 22-and-a-half inches long.  Wow, yeah, she’s way bigger than both sets of twins were.  And by the way, I absolutely love her name.  It’s beautiful.”

“I agree,” Eliza said.

“I’m glad you like it,” Alex smiled, not taking her eyes off of her new baby girl.  “I wanted to stick with the ‘J’ thing.  I didn’t realize Lena was going to do that too.”

Kara chuckled.  “Me neither.”

“What about you, Maggie?” Eliza inquired.  “Is your name a ‘J’ name too?”

“You’ll see,” Maggie smirked.  “Hopefully she’ll make an appearance sooner, rather than later.”

“I hope so too,” Kara agreed, wrapping Maggie up in her arms and giving her a few little kisses.

They all just watched their new baby girl nursing for a while, enjoying her sweet little face and the look of adoration on Alex’s face.  After a while, though, Maggie needed to sit down, so Kara grabbed her a chair out of the corner and sat it down next to Alex’s bed.  It was nearing 3am, so the mother-to-be was quite tuckered out.  Kara stood behind her and rubbed her shoulders for a while.

“Maggie, honey, why don’t you let Eliza take you home for the night, so you can sleep,” Kara suggested.  “You can come back with the others in the morning.  You might want to call Lyra in the morning, so someone can stay with Lena while you’re here.”

Maggie frowned, clearly torn on whether she should stay with Alex where her heart longed to be, or go home and go to bed where her body longed to be.  Ultimately, she decided to do the wise thing and go home and get some rest.  Her baby couldn’t be too far off from arriving, and she would need her strength.  She allowed Eliza to take her home, leaving Alex and Kara alone for the night.

“I’m so proud of you, Alex,” Kara whispered, not wanting to disturb the quiet moment between them.  “I can’t believe that you had to go through all that without pain medicine.  You’re the strongest woman I know.  Hands down.”

“Says Supergirl,” Alex chuckled.

“That’s right,” Kara nodded.  “You’re way stronger than me.  I’m a total baby when it comes to pain.”

“No you’re not, Kara, don’t say that,” Alex argued.  “You’re incredible.”

“And you’re as awesome as they come,” Kara paried.  “Lucy’s never gonna be able to top this one.”

Alex laughed.  “That is true.”

“So I think that means you’re definitely way more badass than her, and I’ll back you up on that every time,” Kara asserted.

“Thanks,” Alex grinned.  “I think Jordan is almost done nursing.  She’s slowing way down.  You want to burp her?”

Kara bounced on her toes with glee.  “Yes, please!”  She waited patiently until the baby seemed to be finished, and delicately took the newborn into her arms.  “Hi, Jordan!  I’m your Mama!   I love you so much, baby girl.  You’re gonna be a good girl and burp for Mama, right?”  She cradled the baby against her shoulder and patted her back while rocking side to side.  “Who’s our sweet little angel, huh?  That’s you.  That’s our Jordan.  Jordan is the little angel. Yes.”

Jordan cooed at Kara while she talked, occasionally letting out a loud burp when Kara patted her just right.  She seemed to want to talk back to Kara already, and it was beyond adorable.

Alex grinned so hard her cheeks hurt.  “She loves you so much.  She’s gonna be a chatty one.”

Kara giggled.  “Are you gonna talk a lot like Mama?   Hmm?  You know where Mama gets it from?  Her daddy.  Your grandpa.  He used to talk to me all the time.  I loved it.  I’m sorry you can’t meet him, but you can meet your grandma.  Well, your other grandma.  I know you just met your Grandma Eliza, but you also have Grandmother Alura as well.  They both love you so much, and they’re so glad you’re here in the world, just like me and Mommy are.”

The baby kept making noises at Kara, and Alex started giggling halfway through her speech.

“Uh-oh, someone needs a new diaper already,” Kara announced.  She looked around the room to find diapers and wipes, and when she found them, she laid the baby down on the end of the bed to change her, and the infant wailed in protest.  “It’s OK, honey, I just have to change your diaper really quick.  The baby kept on crying through the whole diaper change, so Kara swaddled her back up and passed her back to Alex.

“It’s OK, little one,” Alex soothed.  “Mommy’s got you now.  It’s OK.  You’re OK.”

As Alex talked to her, she calmed down, so she could listen to Alex’s voice.

“There you go,” Alex encouraged her.  “There’s our girl.  Mommy’s got you.  I love you so much, and I promise to love you for as long as I live.”

Again, the baby started making noises like she wanted to talk as well.

“You are so cute!  And you have more hair than your brothers combined,” Alex chuckled.  “Such a pretty girl.  Mommy loves you so much.”

Kara sat on the bed and wrapped her arm around Alex, so she could cuddle her and interact with the baby too.  The pair of them talked to baby Jordan until she fell asleep, then Kara took her and sat in the chair beside the bed, so Alex could get some sleep as well.  During the night, Alex was able to sleep quite a bit more than she expected to.  She was so used to twins nursing, it was a huge relief to be able to sleep for a whole two hours before the baby woke up to nurse again.

In the morning around 9am, the rest of the gang showed up to meet the new member of their family.  Everyone congratulated Alex and told her how proud of her they were.  The twins were over the moon about their new sister and they bickered about who got to hold her first.  Finally, they played Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine who went first.  Jessie won.  She got her hands on the baby and started bawling.

“What’s wrong, baby?” Alex asked in concern.

“Nothing,” Jessie sobbed.  “I’m just so happy right now.”

“Aww, I’m glad you’re happy,” Alex smiled.  “She loves you.”

“I love you too, little Jordan,” Jessie sniffled.  “You’re so beautiful.”

Baby Jordan cooed at her big sister, making Jessie grin through her tears.  “Are you trying to talk already, baby sister?” she chuckled.  “Say, ‘sissy.’  ‘Sissy.’”

“Ahhhhhhh,” Jordan said.

Jessie giggled.  “You’re so cute!  I love you so much!”

“OK, my turn!” Jamie insisted.

Jessie whined.  “I just got her!”

“Jamie, please be patient, baby,” Alex said tiredly.  “You’ll get plenty of time with her too, I promise.”

Jamie pouted.  “Fine,” she sulked.  She let Jessie hold the baby for a few more minutes, and then finally, the blonde handed the baby over.

“Hi, baby sister!” Jamie beamed, rocking the baby in her arms.  “I’m Jamie.  I’m your big sister too.”

Jordan cooed and flailed her little arms around.

“I love you so much!” Jamie told her.  “I’m so glad you’re finally here.  You’re so perfect.  Yes, you are.  I promise I’m going to be the best big sister to you.  What a good girl.”

Jordan let out a squeal, but she didn’t cry.  It seemed to be a happy noise.

“Oh, really?” Jamie giggled.  “You don’t say.”

Alura poked her head into the room.  “Uh, you guys?”

Everyone turned to look at her.

“I think Maggie is in labor.”

“YES!” Kara cheered.
