"...Mother." Ryan's monotone voice said nodding towards her.
(A/N: His mother looks like Charlize Theron.)
She stood there nervously as she brushed some hair to the side, there really should be no reason for her to be nervous, instead she should just be able to naturally hug him. He could see it in her eyes that she really wanted to do that too, but their relationship was so strained that she held herself back.
"Umm, how have you been? Where were you tonight? Were you still helping Meredith?" She asked tapping her fingers on the counter a nervous tick she had.
Ryan moved around to the other side of the counter effectively cutting her off from the chance to hug him, "Where is Tom?"
She sighed rubbing her forehead, "Your Father," she stressed the word father, "Is upstairs asleep, I wanted to wait up from you to get home."
"Hmm. Well I am going to bed, school tomorrow and all that." Ryan said moving to leave.
"Wait!" She called out causing him to pause in the doorway, "Do-do you maybe want to stay up with me? We could watch movies?"
"Why?" Ryan couldn't help but ask, true she was trying but really it made him more suspicious then anything.
She looked heartbroken as she spoke, "Nevermind, just....go to bed Ryan."
He heard the defeat in her voice as she spoke, there was something in him that stirred, honestly she was trying at the moment and even if it was years late the least he could do is try and show some.sort of affection for her.
"There was a new movie I wanted to stream, do you want to watch it with me?" He asked not looking at her as he did so.
"I-Yes, please. You go ahead and get it started while I get some snacks ready." She her voice excited but also a little nasally as if she was just about to cry.
He nodded and walked off into the living room.
His parents were distant and cold, and honestly he didn't hold a lot of love for them really, but seeing his mother about to cry actually touched something inside of him that had been pushed to the back for the longest time. In the moment he heard the break in her voice he knew he needed to reach out some way, yes she pushed him away b cause of her job, but she was trying now.
Heading into the living room he turned on the TV and immediately went to HBO Max, he used this service the most but hated how for his favorite film series it was spread out in this app and two others. Sighing he just chose the most recent add on for them which happened to be 'Annabelle Creation' something he really enjoyed.
His mother walked in soon after with a bowl full of popcorn, "Ooh Annabelle Creation, I wanted to see this but you know your father and scary movies."
"No, I don't know." Ryan said unintentionally doing a dig towards his parents if her wince was anything to go by. He just didn't know his parents that well, hell with them being in Washington it was actually better then when they were in New York, at least he saw them more often.
He saw them maybe once a month in New York, which was horrible considering he was only a middle schooler at the time, he truthfully did not know a lot about his parents. So hearing that his dad did not like scary movies was news to him, he didn't even know if either of them were allergic to anything, he knew he wasn't but that didn't mean they didn't have allergies.
"Oh, umm, well yes. Your father has always been someone who is not a huge fan of scary movies, more of a mystery guy. Meanwhile I adore them, anything supernatural or scary I love." She said with a smile as she snuggled into the couch.
It didn't escape his notice that she was sitting extremely close to him, he was at the edge of a nine foot long couch, and eight feet of it was not being used as she sat close to him. 'Adorable.' he thought unconsciously as he saw her snuggling up with the throw blanket.
"What is it?" She asked tilting her head as she caught him watching her.
He shook his head as he settled in the lights dimming from the controller he was using, "Nothing. Let's get this movie started."
She nodded smiling.
Ryan got several messages through the movie, and he was sure that the were from Leah and Rosalie but he didn't stop to check them as the movies played, mainly because he was enjoying his time with his mother. He didn't know when he would get real time like this again, and he wanted to repair what little relationship they had with one another, it would be nice in the long run.
"Do you need to answer that?" His mother asked when they paused half way so that they could refill the popcorn and use the bathroom.
"No, it is most likely just my girlfriend checking in, but I think at this time she would be asleep." He said while shaking his head as he stretched out.
"Girlfriend?! You have a girlfriend?! Do you have a picture of her? Can I see it? Can I meet her? What's her name?" His mother's eyes widen as she sat on her knees on the couch going excited like a gossiping teen.
He chuckled as he heard her words, he could see that she really was genuinely excited and wanted to know, it was a far cry from what he was use to seeing, from all his mommies she usually brushed him off.
Opening his phone he showed her a picture of Leah and him that was taken at the Bonfire some days ago, "Her name is Leah Clearwater, she lives on the reservation with her family. We just started dating a couple of days ago so it is new, but I have known her since we moved here."
"Oh my gosh she is beautiful.....can I meet her?" She asked.
(A/N: For This who forgot, Leah does look like Ana De Armas.)
Ryan was conflicted, he wanted to say a biting remark but held his tongue as this wouldn't be her first time meeting Leah, he had introduced her to her before but it seems like she didn't remember that at all. At that time she had been doing yet another important case and Ryan brought Leah and Seth over, she was not paying attention at the time though.
"How long are you here?" He asked instead of answering as he didn't want to let them if she was not going to be here for more then a couple of days.
"The whole week, and maybe a little longer. We finished that last case and I decided we needed to take our vacation. I split our two weeks with now and then the first week we will spend with you at your grandmother's this summer." She answered biting her lip looking for his reaction.
Ryan nodded slowly not happy or disappointed by the news, "Okay. I will talk to her, maybe we can all have dinner sometime this week."
"Great. Maybe after your basketball game, is the next one home or travel?" She asked ignoring the movie for the moment.
"Travel, we are playing a team from Seattle. So maybe we can all just have dinner in the city." He said shrugging but on the inside he was hoping.
"Sounds great. You can tell me all about her this week. Now let's get back to the movie."
That's exactly what they did until the movie ended, it was good but he already knew that seeing it in his other life, looking over he saw his mom asleep with her head laid down on his thigh. She looked so comfortable so he slowly moved her head off, after cleaning the living room and turning the TV off he turned to her.
Lifting her gently he carried her up the stairs and to her room, but when he got inside he sighed, his father was spread out across the top making it impossible for him to set her in it comfortably. Walking out again he took her his own room and laid her in the bed, after making sure she was comfortable he walked to the guest room.
He grunted as he tripped over a box in the room, it was the reason he didn't bring her to it as it was cluttered with their old case boxes they kept at the house, he couldn't have got her in without tripping over something. No matter how good his reflexes were he would not have been able to do it.
Stripping he got under the covers and closed his eyes to sleep, he felt comfort that he got to spend a little time with his mother, hopefully that would increase while they were home, but he was not to hopeful.
