It was pure hell to have someone above you try to force you to run errands for them. Especially since Hanagaki (Y/N), the school's karate champion and most popular student, had been defeated by Sano Manjiro, also known as Mikey, the commander of the Tokyo Manji Gang, in a bet she regretted accepting.
Internally cursing herself for agreeing to his conditions since she thought she'd be able to beat him to their second bet, but she didn't. Their initial bet resulted in a draw. No one won. No one lost. They were both tied and decided to move to Mikey's chosen bet.
Whoever defeats 50 people in half an hour wins.
She groaned as she rested her head on her desk, unbothered about the loud mutterings around her as she tried to sleep, but to her dismay, someone tapped her on the shoulder. She wanted to yell at this person, but when she looked up, she saw the person who was now ruining her mood as an irk mark appeared on her forehead.
Mikey appeared in front of her as if it were a normal thing for a student from another school to do. "Let's get something to eat," he said. While her classmates were staring back and forth between the two strangers, her sight was drawn to the beanpole standing and leaning on the doorframe. "Come on, loser, I don't have all day."
"Huh?!" (Y/N) snapped, causing all of her classmates to look at her with a surprise look on their faces.
They knew her as a person who, despite her intimidating appearance, was typically calm. She maintains her cool at all times and rarely shows emotion. She once beat their classmate in the boy's bathroom because she was annoyed with him. Because he was afraid of her, that boy ended up transferring to another school. Everything returned to normal after that, but they were always wary about grating on her nerves, so they kept their distance.
"Who do you think you're calling a loser?" She exclaimed, garnering even more shocked expressions from her classmates.
As they watched the two people in the back row of the room, all of her classmates thought the same thing: "This is my first time seeing her mad like this." They were both terrified of her and amused by the blond boy's ability to stand in front of her without trembling in fear. They would have wished for the earth to eat them or passed out in terror if they were in his shoes.
Is he uninformed that Hanagaki (Y/N) has the ability to break someone's bones?
"I feel sorry for that boy already." They added.
The (h/c) haired female stood up from her seat as her eyes were twitching in irritation at the boy's face in front of her.
"That would be you, loser." Mikey smirked.
(Y/N) clenched her fist, holding herself back before she could punch him in the face and before she received another detention again, even if Mikey wasn't actually attending their school. If their Principal finds out about this, then she would probably be attending detentions on Saturdays and she doesn't want that.
"You only beat me because you distracted me by directing all those damn bodies in my direction intentionally to slow me down!" She yelled at his face, oblivious to the fact that she had already lost her temper.
"You still lose," Mikey added, causing the girl in front of him to gasp and blow smoke into her ears.
"Pipsqueak!"
"What the fuck? You're just a year older than me!" Mikey snapped, glaring at her.
"I don't care. You're a midget!"
"Huh? You're just motherfucking 3 inches taller than me. Who're you calling a midget?!!"
Draken deadpanned as he watched the two bickering. He felt somewhat embarrassed at the two since (Y/N)'s classmates were around and He overheard them talking how strange it was for the (h/c) haired female to act this way, given that she always has a stoic expression on her face and rarely snaps at anyone. These muttering from her classmates caused Draken to be amused at the female and thought that this must be one of the reasons why Mikey had taken a liking to her. She sounds interesting by just what he heard from the muttering around him but Draken couldn't help but also be amused at how these two have similarities. They both know how to get on each other's nerves.
The bell rang, signaling the end of the lunch break. (Y/N) then noticed that all of her classmates were staring at them, so she gave them her famous "what-the-fuck-are-you-looking-at" look, which caused them all to avert their gaze in fear of grating on her nerves, and Mikey became annoyed at how easily she became distracted and ignored his presence.
"I'm not done with you yet!" Mikey tried to refocus her attention on him, but all she did was make a tch sound and return to her seat.
"My throat is sore and I'm tired." She boredly stated as she laid her head on her desk before saying, "Get out before the school will drag your small ass out."
Mikey was about to say something to get back on her since he looked really pissed when she called him small. Draken stepped in and stopped Mikey in whatever he was about to say as he told him that they have to go, which Mikey agreed to before casting a brief peek at her figure.
"She's a handful." Draken told his shorter friend as they walked outside of the school. "But I have an idea why you became interested in her."
"I'm not interested in her." Mikey objected, but Draken simply shook his head, not believing what his friend said as they walked in silence.
"Yeah, sure."
After classes ended. (Y/N) walked outside the school, yawning as she had her head hanging low due to the sleepiness she was feeling. Her pace was slower than usual, which made her catch her own cousin's attention who was walking alongside his girlfriend, Hinata.
"It's (Y/N)-chan. Hello," Hinata walked up to you as she greeted you with her usual cheerful voice. "Are you going home, (Y/N)-chan?" She asked as she observed the older female, concerned by her unusual facial expression.
The female in question cast a glance over to the younger girl.
She smiled and said, "Oh, hey Hinata. "I'm not going home right away. I'm going to run some errands," she said, casting a quick glance at her cousin, who was standing nearby and listening to them.
Takemichi already had an idea of what she was referring to since Mitsuya explained it to him that night. She had to run some errands for the Toman division captains, as part of the conditions they agreed to two days before. Before the commander of the gang introduced her to the entire Toman, she had to perform some things, or as she put it, 'errands' for the division captains. She didn't mind not being introduced to them, but Mikey thought it would be great to introduce her to them once she finished her five days as an errand girl. Since everyone had heard of this female beating up other members from the other gang, Mikey thought that it would help their members gain confidence once they learned that she joined their gang.
"Which of them are you going to be working today?" Takemichi questioned, causing Hinata to grow a confused look on her face as she shifted her gaze to her boyfriend and to the older female with them.
(Y/N) sighed and rolled her eyes as she imagined how dreadful it would be to work with this person.
"Baji," she replied. She had enough of that boy already. Despite the fact that they attended different schools, Baji would constantly emerge out of nowhere to annoy her. If she could, she would prefer not to work with him today. But if she declines, she'll be stuck with Mikey for the entire week, and that's what she was trying to avoid more than these five captains.
"The 1st division captain?"
"Unfortunately," she growled. "I already worked with the other two, so there's only three of them left."
"Who were they?"
(Y/N)'s eyes suddenly widened for a brief moment due to the realization that her cousin had suddenly become more talkative to her these past few days and always asked her some questions. Although the questions he asked were actually annoying, she was still glad that her cousin was now trying to get close to her. But her suspicion of him developed as well. Takemichi had this other personality with him, she could tell. He wasn't himself sometimes. He might be obnoxious and loud at times, but he could also be distant and silent. Even if those were her personal peeves, she prefers him to be loud and annoying.
"Muto and Pah-chin. They're both easy to handle."
Takemichi immediately remembered those two captain's scary faces. He couldn't help but imagine how scary it was to be working under them until the words she said processed in his mind.
"Easy to handle?" He confusedly asked. She was supposed to be working under them, like doing something for them to acknowledge her or... Takemichi couldn't think of anything further.
"Yeah, I beat 'em up." She smugly answered, prompting the blond boy's jaw to gape open in reaction.
"WHAT?!"
"Urusai, Takemichi. You're so loud." The (h/c) haired female said as she started walking ahead of the two. "I'm going ahead. Please watch over Takemichi for me, Hinata, he's usually a trouble magnet and I hope you'll beat him if he does something reckless again."
"You can count on me, (Y/N)-chan!" Hinata replied. "Bye bye!" She added, waving her hand in the air as the older female began to fade from their view.
Hinata grew concerned as she looked across at her boyfriend, who still had a surprised look on his cute-but-dumb face.
"Are you okay, Takemichi-kun?"
"Yabai. Yabai." Takemichi muttered as he slowly lost all the brain cells left in his brain. 'My cousin is dangerous!' He said to himself.
(Y/N) was walking quietly towards the place Baji had told her. She wore her earphones and nodded her head to the music, oblivious to the stares she received from others. It was nothing new to her. She was used to people staring at her as if she were an alien. Because she was used to it, she simply disregarded it and went on with her business. She wasn't the kind to get involved in other people's business unless it irritated her, such as when she witnessed people bullying others who were clearly weaker than them, particularly children. She may dislike children for their loudness and tantrums, but that doesn't mean she would ignore them if anything terrible happened to them.
She came to a halt as soon as she saw the address that Baji had given her through text. He instructed her to go to a shop named PALME. Realizing how near it was to her workplace, she was a little taken aback. You only need to travel a little farther and turn right to reach the cafe where she worked part-time.
She was standing in front of a pet store, as she usually did, admiring the dogs outside the window.
She squatted down a little and smiled at the white-furred pomeranian. She could hear the dog barking quietly even when she was just outside.
The new pups' barking was heard by a pet store employee who was dusting the shelves in the staff area. He assumed that someone was playing with the dog, but he hadn't heard the shop's bell chimes, which would indicate that someone had entered. He moved over to the front of the shop with a piece of cleaning cloth in his hand as he exited the staff area. When he saw a (h/c) headed girl crouching to level the small dog, he was taken aback. She was smiling, which made his jaw drop open since he knew who she was and had never seen her smile so sweetly. She tucked her hair behind her right ear since it was loose and getting messy due to the breeze.
As he watched her smile, Chifuyu clutched his chest and felt his heart flutter in a strange manner he hadn't felt before.
"Yo, (Y/N)!" Baji arrived from the side, causing the female's smile to disappear and her look to change to a frown. She got to her feet and faced the jet-black-haired boy in front of her, who was beaming and showing off his canine in which she *cough* found *cough* cute *cough* but she wouldn't admit it.
"I got here first before you?" She said, her arms folded across her chest, in disbelief. "And you're in charge of a division? Leading people? What a joke."
Baji breathed violently through his nostrils as he replied. "Shut up. We're gonna do something fun today."
(Y/N) brows furrowed in curiosity.
"Fun?" She repeated and then she remembered her and Baji's previous wild ideas of fun. Her frown gave way to a grin. "Whose bike are we stealing?"
Baji grinned broadly as he turned to face the guy who stood inside the shop, observing them from the inside.
"His-" He pointed his thumb to the boy who had an undercut hair, wearing an apron and holding a cleaning cloth in his hand.
(Y/N)'s gaze followed Baji's thumb and he found the boy who always offered her a lift whenever they happened to cross paths.
"Oh, it's cutie pie." She said in a different tone that Baji didn't recognize. If he didn't know better, he would say that she was flirting with him.
"Let's go or we'll be late for the sun set!" Baji pulled her as he started running towards the nearby park where he believed Chifuyu, his vice captain, had parked his bike.
Chifuyu stood there dumbfounded after the conversation he heard from those two sank in his mind.
"Not my bike!"
But it was too late; Baji Keisuke and Hanagaki (Y/N) had taken his bike and gone to the outskirts of town, leaving him with no idea where they were heading or when he'd be able to retrieve it. With a sour expression on his face, he returned to continue what he was doing earlier, then he remembered the (h/c) headed girl who had made his heart flutter earlier.
"I can't like her." He told himself. "Baji-san likes her. Yes, that's right. Only Baji-san has the right to like her."
The sea salt smell that mixed with the fresh sense of the piercing wind greeted her nose as she opened her eyes upon dozing off behind Baji's bikes while he was riding the bike that they stole from Chifuyu. They'd been riding for over an hour when they first stopped at a 7/11 convenience store to get food since they were both hungry..
Once they arrived at the seaside, (Y/N) jumped off the bike and held her skirt firmly since it was blowing in the breeze, revealing her panty. Baji parked the bike in a visible place where they could see it. Since they had been hearing whistles from passing riders, he noticed his female friend doing her best to keep her skirt in control. He gritted his teeth as he wanted to beat their faces for catcalling his friend but he forgot one thing, (Y/N) knows how to defend herself.
She spoke out to them with a sneer on her face, "Yeah, I know my ass is nice." Baji chuckled as he approached her, removing his blaze and tying it around her waist.
She flinched at his sudden action, but shrugged it off. Even though they often bickered and ended up fighting, they realized how much they cared for one other. After all, they'd been friends for four years. What she didn't realize was that Baji sees her as more than just a friend.
"I'm surprised you're not challenging them to a fight," Baji said as they strolled towards the beach to their favorite hangout spot.
The (h/c) female grumbled and cast a sidelong glance at him. "I'm too exhausted to yell right now. My throat hurts from yelling at a particular midget earlier."
"Midget?"
"Your commander." She replied, walking ahead of him as she sat down on their usual spot.
Baji paused for a time as he pondered the reasons for what Mikey had done to her, forcing her to yell. He knew her as a person who didn't waste time or energy on people she didn't like. She barely even talks nowadays nor shouts at him. She used to be loud and bothersome to him, but after what occurred in the past, (Y/N) changed.
He had no idea that he had been staring at her for a while now until she spoke.
"Why the fuck are you looking at me like that?" She asked, her eyebrows arched.
Yep she does cuss at him all the time.
"What do you think of Mikey?"
The question made the girl think of an answer.
"He's short." She started causing Baji's corner of his lips to tug upwards. "He's annoying as hell, and he reminded me of something unhappy from the past," she said, her voice lowering at the last four words.
Baji noticed a slight change in her expression. He was aware of the situation. He knew. He knew it even before.
"So you know?" He asked, as he sat next her and placed the plastic bag of snacks they had purchased between them.
(Y/N) hummed back, her attention averted to the sea in front of them. The sun had begun to set. They both raised their gaze to the sky, which was a gorgeous mix of orange, pink, and blue. For a few minutes, no one said anything. They were both enveloped in solitude, only hearing the waves and smelling the sea salt air.
A gust of wind blew her long (h/c) hair away as she struggled to pull it back, but she was stopped when someone held her hair for her.
She glanced across at Baji, who was watching the sunset with his right hand in her hair.
"Mikey's older brother is Shinichiro-nii. I know," she whispered, her gaze returning to the sun. "I knew because his eyes reminded me of him, and then I learned his last name."
Another silence...
"However, that midget is nothing like Shinichiro-nii," she remarked, recalling the blond-haired boy who continually irritates her. "They're not the same at all."
Silence engulfed them again as they watched sun finally set and the sky had turned dark.
Baji felt a sudden weight on his shoulder. His gaze turned to the girl next to him, who was dozing and had her eyes closed. He couldn't help but make a small chuckle at her. Every time they came here, she would fall asleep. He was used to it, yet he couldn't help but feel something inside him whenever she was close to him.
They are just friends. But why does she keep making him feel these unwanted feelings? These feelings that he shouldn't be feeling to a friend. These feelings he feels for her started four years ago. These feelings that keep him striving. These feelings made him want to protect her, despite the fact that he knew she was capable of protecting herself. These feelings are the reason why he thought of forming a gang–a team to protect those who you love and care for.
He stroked the hairs out of her face and smiled at her sleeping face, saying, "I'm content having you as a friend."
