Capítulo 18: Damian Had Unexpectedly Good Eyes!

Chris Henderson saw his youngest uncle Damian as a piece of bone that was stuck between his teeth. That was how he looked when he answered Damian's call and showed up at the CEO's floor.

When he saw the ugly secretary that once worked for him, his mood worsened visibly.

"You!" he barked, already forgetting Irene's name after only a week had passed. "Make me an espresso, now!"

"Right away, Mr. Henderson," Irene replied with a beaming smile. She rose from her chair but then one of her shoes was caught by a bump across the carpet.

"Ahhh!!!"

Irene grabbed the nearest thing she could in order to not fall down. It just happened to be Chris Henderson. Instead of asking Irene whether she was fine and helping her up, the man turned dark red from fury.

"Stupid woman!" he shouted. "Can you not watch where you are going? Lord, have mercy!!!"

Chris rudely shoved Irene aside. He was the perfect gentleman.

"I... I am so, so, sorry, Sir!" Irene wept, shedding tears out of nowhere as she ran out of her working station.

Once she made a turn around the coffee corner, though, her crocodile tears quickly dried up.

She was about to show Chris how sorry she was.

Irene casually grabbed a pack of instant coffee that she found when she cleaned up her station. Its expiry date was due in a month. She had been saving it especially for Chris.

It must be her lucky day.

Humming happily, Irene poured half-boiled tap water into the cup and stirred it evenly. She was tempted to spit into the cup of coffee for extra flavor, but then she decided that such action was beneath her.

In her ear, Chris', voice was heard loud and clear.

"Did you call me?"

"Obviously. Unless you have something to say to me as well."

Irene chuckled to herself. Chris surely had a lot of curse words he would love to spit at Damian's face. Then again, Damian was not exactly the person to blame.

The achievement was entirely Irene's, and she would love to fling it to the moron's head. Just not now.

"Sit down," Damian's even-tempered voice was heard, followed by the sound of a chair scraping against the office carpet.

"What is it?" the general manager asked with a lazy tone. "Do you need some pointers to do your job? I heard that no one saw you in the past week."

Damian skipped Chris' taunting words altogether.

A creaking sound told Irene that he was putting his weight on the desk.

"Chris, do you know what happened recently?" the CEO's cool and sardonic voice rang out of the listening device.

"How am I supposed to know? I am not a prophet," came the snappy answer.

"Indeed, you cannot know everything. Did you at least know who passed you those bruises?"

Outside, Irene's lips were pulled into a sneer.

Ooooh, this was delicious.

She had to be there to see Chris' face. She just couldn't miss it.

Irene quickly rushed to Damian's office with the terrible cup of coffee in her hand.

"Your espresso, Mr. Henderson," she announced with a certain degree of glee in her voice.

Chris looked up at Irene, his face definitely paler than when he first came in.

"Thank you," he mumbled.

Irene felt an inexplicable sense of gratification. It was almost as good as sex, one could say.

How Irene wished that Damian would just continue speaking about Chris' shameless intention toward Scarlett Davies in front of her.

Unfortunately, Damian still wanted to preserve what sad bits that remained of Chris' dignity. He gestured for Irene to get out with a slight nod of his head.

Irene gave Chris her sweetest smile before she disappeared with the tray and went to sit in her chair.

The secretary opened a random mail and stared at the desktop screen while she continued eavesdropping.

"I... I fell."

Irene was about to burst in laughter.

"Seriously, Chris Henderson? You fell? The whole company can tell that you are lying, and you still tell the same story over and over again?" the woman screamed in her head.

Irene bit into the end of her mechanical pencil.

Arghhhh.

She would really love to go back in there to just look at Chris' face once the superficial confidence and righteous facade chipped off like wall paint.

If she could not be inside the room, could she maybe just creep along the outside walls and peek into Damian's office from the huge window?

She knew she could do it, but she could not risk being caught in the act.

No matter how smart and quick-witted she was, this kind of brazen act would still be difficult to explain to anyone, especially to her boss, the CEO.

"Chris, have you forgotten what I am?" Damian spoke in a low voice. "That was the dumbest excuse I have ever heard."

Chris gritted his teeth.

"Fine," he said. "I had a little fling. Men do that. Don't tell me that you don't go around sleeping with women while you were... abroad."

A little fling? This was a little fling that he had with a millionaire's only daughter that recently turned twenty! If Suzie's information was accurate, this gross man had his eyes on Scarlett when she hit eighteen!

How disgusting.

Irene clawed into her desk.

"Honestly, I never thought of you as a good person. I am this close to turning you in, Chris. Don't test me."

The sound of Chris swallowing his saliva was heard.

"I... I didn't do anything. We kissed and made out. I didn't touch her."

"Your wife is pregnant," Damian reminded him. "Though it is clear that you are better off without children, I did hope that you magically transform into father of the year as soon as you found out. Looks like I am wrong."

"It is not your place to criticize me at all!"

"Trust me that it is. And by the way..."

Irene widened her eyes in shock when she felt a tapping sound against her ear.

Pale from the realization, she quickly took out the listening device from her ear and crushed it.

Damian found the bug!
