They both sat down and thought of what reason they could give Betty that would be sufficient to end the engagement.
"I have got an idea", Theodore exclaimed.
"what is it, come on tell me quickly",
"You could tell her you are impotent, no lady would want to marry an impotent man". Fife stared at him incredously, "you want me to say that I am impotent?",
"do you have a better idea?", Theodore countered.
"not really", Fife admitted.
"come on think about it, if you use this excuse, in addition to Betty breaking the engagement, your mother wouldn't force you to marry anyone ever again",
"you are correct. It is a good idea, but you forgot one thing, I would have to step down as lord. An impotent man can't be a lord, how would he continue the lineage?",
"I didn't really think that far ahead Fife, I am so sorry".
