When morning came, the weight of last night's conversation still hung over me. Damien had confessed so much, laid his secrets bare—or at least, some of them. But I wasn't entirely convinced. Deep down, I knew I couldn't blindly trust his words. Not when so much remained tangled in shadows.
Today, I had a plan of my own.
The thought had come to me sometime in the early hours, as I lay awake staring at the ceiling. If Damien claimed he'd been honest with me now, I needed to test that honesty. To truly know if he had nothing more to hide, I'd have to look where he least expected.
I would work with Victor, his estranged brother. Well, not really work with him, but pretend to, just enough to gather information. If Damien truly wanted me by his side, he would have told me everything. But if he was still hiding something, especially concerning Victor, it would eventually come to light. And I would be the one to discover it.
