Capítulo 28: Lin Memgmeng's merit

Raizel just gave Peter a look before he bent down and continued reading. The trafficking case had expanded beyond anyone's expectation. More news is being dug out as the day goes by.

Peter laughed. "Mengmeng had obtained a large merit. To think there was such a trafficking ring under the eyes of the Almighty Union. They are probably getting lax and senile."

Raizel shook his head. He might never truly understand the hatred that Peter had for the Union. The Union had been created during his time and he had been one of the major shareholders. Its contribution to Terra had been immense as well.

"Trafficking mundanes is one thing. To think that they had the guts to sell young cultivators. Mundanes selling cultivators.." Peter laughed loudly, almost choking with the force of his laughter. "Isn't it funny?"

Raizel glanced at the newspaper again. All 19 victims were children with Dao Seeds. Such actions were not new. Powerful cultivation clans have always bought, or adopted as they like to call it, children with Dao seeds to replenish the clans. Some of the children would be raised as blood guards and the rest would be integrated into the clan. Children were young after all, it was easy for them to forget where they came from.

However, for the mundane to be the preparators of such actions was surprising. He had a feeling that this was just the tip of the matter. For example, who were the children sold to and why?

He opened another page of the newspaper. That was a matter for the Union to take care of.

"There, all done. I would have done better, it is a pity that my cultivation has stagnated recently. If only I could get some pointers."

Finally, When Peter had visited early in the morning with a bottle of soymilk and some bean cakes, it did not feel right. When he did not ask for the money for the food, Raizel had felt like something was off. When he had also proceeded to help him tend to his garden, generously using his spiritual essence to make the leaves even more buoyant and lish, Raizel knew that something was up.

He just gave Bill a little pointer and Peter was already knocking at his door.

"You can search for a Dao teacher online."

Peter sighed as he looked up at the sky. "Forget it, insights into the Dao is now a commercial business. Oh! How the mighty had fallen."

Raizel looked at him. The old man was dressed in a plain white t-shirt and blue shorts. The sight of him with his hands behind his back and his eyes above was so off-putting.

"Then you go to a Dao Exchange convention and hope for good fortune. It is not useful sighing in my backyard, do you think that if my master had told me any insights into the Dao of Wood. I would pay you 100 spirit stones to help me. I would rather save my money and do it myself. Better use the money to look for a Dao teacher to help you." He said coldly. It has been days but he could still feel the money missing from his spirit stone.

Peter faltered back. He was a little speechless, "You..you"

"I, what" Raizel refused to give him a room to speak. That was his hard-earned money.

Seeing his completely stupefied appearance, Raizel politely reminded him, "Besides, when one seeks the Dao, no money is too large to send."

_____

Jingle! Jingle!

There was a jingling. The wind chimes suddenly rang from the front of the store. The sound was especially clear in the suddenly quiet environment.

Peter stood straightened up and glared at Raizel, "What kind of store owner is always at the backyard of his house. Better hurry and tend to your customers."

Raizel walked in and opened the door to the store. He was not surprised.

"Welcome. What would you like to buy?"

He left the door open and moved to sit down at the counter not giving a glance to Peter who followed behind him.

The couple was a little nervous from their expression.

"Sir, do you remember us? My name is Tommy and this is my wife Tonia. We once bought a tracing talisman for you."

"En." Raizel remembered them clearly.

The room was engulfed in silence. Peter rolled his eyes before stepping out with a kind, genial smile.

"Good afternoon. My name is Peter, I heard what happened to your daughter. Hope she is alright now."

Tommy and Tonia smiled. They were vastly different from the images that appeared on television last week. They looked more healthy and robust.

"Yes. We are ever grateful to the Union for all they have done for us. We were told that it was largely due to your help, Sir Collins. We came here to extend our gratitude. Thank you very much. We can not express how grateful we are." Tommy said and he bowed deeply.

Tonia also joined her husband to bow. "Thank you for saving Nina."

Raizel nodded as he accepted their thanks while Peter was solely focused on something else.

With that same smile on his face, he asked, "The Union? I thought it was the police that rescued little Nina and the others."

Tommy was a little confused. Was there a difference between the two of them? The police were, after all, a branch of the government. "It was the police. They did their best." Tommy at this moment had completely forgotten about his actions of calling out the police on television and social media. It was not just him, the slander thrown at the police previously had also miraculously escaped everyone's mind.

Peter gritted his teeth, "You are right. Little Nina did not come with you guys."

Tommy was a little vigilant but he still shook his head, "The Union offered her a scholarship to a school in a big city. My wife and I will be joining her soon."

Peter scoffed If there was something the Union was especially good at. It was wiping their buttocks.

Tonia pulled her husband away from the strange old man.

"Sir, Nina has started cultivating. Do you have any talisman you would like to recommend?"

Raizel thought for a while. Talismans for someone who has just started her journey into the Dao were few.

"It is not good to rely on auxiliary items when you begin your cultivation. Just a Noise-cancelling talisman and a few defensive talismans. The section by your left. Those are the Tier-1 talismans. You can pick defensive talismans from there."

The couple nodded. They moved to the showcases by their left. There were rows and rows of talismans.

"Immovable Steel box! That sounds really amazing." Tommy said to his wife. He could remember when he was still little before going to the Appraisal Office, he had prayed every day. He wanted to become a cultivator. To become strong, fly in the skies and fight evil people. However, it was not his fate. To think that one day, he will be in a talismans store buying talismans, it was really exciting.

"It lasts for just one minute. It is useless. Look at this EarthTurtle talisman. One can hide for ten minutes."

"It sounds lame"

"Who cares about how it sounds?" Tonia was resolute to buy the talisman.

"I do."

"Are you the one using the talisman or is it our daughter?"

After arguing a bit, they later agreed to compromise. They picked five talismans that both sounded good and were practical.

"Thank you. We will not forget this."

Raizel cared little about that."You can forget it. I have already been paid."

The couple was still full of gratitude as they left the store. Raizel turned to Peter who had been staring at him.

"What?"

"You never told us you helped find the children."

"I helped draw the talisman." He meant what he told the couple. Lin Mengmeng had already paid him enough money for the talisman. The couple did not owe him any karma nor did the children.

He started to replace the talismans that the couple bought. He hung each one carefully in the glass case. The breeze blew in from the door reminding Raizel of the presence of Autumn. There was something in the To-do list he had to do.

Peter sighed as he fiddled with a cigarette. "They must have paid you a lot of money."

"Peter!" Raizel called suddenly.

Peter's eyes widened as he sat up straight. "What are you calling me for?" There was a serious look on Raizel's face.

"I am leaving tomorrow."

"Eh?"

"I will be leaving my garden in your hands then."

Peter was not sure. He had a feeling that he was drunk and not hearing clearly.
