Ember opened her eyes, rubbing the sleep from her eyelids. Her room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of morning sunlight peeking through the curtains.
She yawned, stretching her arms above her head, and swung her legs over the side of the bed. Her feet dangled in the air, hesitant to touch the ground, as if sensing the start of a new day.
Aunt Leah's voice echoed from downstairs, "Ember, breakfast is ready! Come down, sweetie!"
Ember smiled, her stomach growling in anticipation. She hated Mondays, but Loved her Aunt Leah's breakfast pancakes. She quickly got dressed in her favorite blue jeans and her Nirvana merch t-shirt, ran a brush through her raven black tangled hair, and headed downstairs.
She'd always wonder why her hair was soo dark, after all her Aunt Leah had brown hair like her mother, so she was told. But she loved her piercing blue eyes and long black hair overall.
The aroma of freshly cooked pancakes and brewing coffee filled the air, making her mouth water. Aunt Leah stood at the stove, flipping pancakes with a spatula, while the TV played softly in the background.
"Hey, kiddo! Happy Monday!" Aunt Leah said, beaming a warm smile.
Ember returned the smile, taking a seat at the table. "Hey, Aunt Leah. Smells amazing in here!"
As they sat down to eat, Ember noticed Aunt Leah seemed a bit more subdued than usual. Her eyes held a hint of concern, but Ember brushed it off as mere paranoia.
Little did she know.
"Here you go sweetie" Aunt Leah said as she dropped a plate of pancakes on the table.
Aunt Leah poured syrup onto Ember's pancakes, her expression turning thoughtful. "You know, Ember, your sweet 16 is just around the corner. Only a week away!"
Ember shrugged, taking a bite of her pancake. "Yeah, I know. But honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. It's just a number, right?"
Aunt Leah's eyes sparkled with a knowing glint. "Ah, but that's where you're wrong, sweetie. A girl's sweet 16 is a special milestone, especially yours."
Ember raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite herself. "What do you mean, 'especially yours?"
Aunt Leah leaned in, her voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "Well, your 16th birthday marks a certain... awakening. A time when she discovers her true potential and her place in the world."
Ember snorted, rolling her eyes. "That sounds like a bunch of clichés, Aunt Leah. I mean, I know some girls get all excited about sweet 16 parties and stuff, but I just don't see the point."
Aunt Leah's expression turned serious, her eyes locked onto Ember's. "Trust me, Ember, this is different. Your 16th birthday will be a day you'll never forget. And I'm not just talking about the party."
Ember felt a shiver run down her spine, despite the warmth of the sunny morning. There was something in Aunt Leah's tone that hinted at secrets and mysteries beyond her understanding.
But she pushed the feeling aside, attributing it to her aunt's usual dramatics. Here's the continuation:
Ember finished her breakfast, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves about the first day of school. Just as she was about to head upstairs to grab her backpack, the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it!" Ember exclaimed, jumping up from her seat.
She opened the door to find her best friend Mia bouncing on the porch, a bright smile on her face.
"Hey, girl! First day of school! I'm so hyped!" Mia said, holding up a brand-new planner.
Ember laughed, feeling a surge of enthusiasm. Mia was always like this since pre-school, full of energy. "Me too! I'm so ready to get this year started."
Mia's eyes widened as she took in Ember's outfit. "Ooh, I love your shirt! Is that new?"
Ember nodded, feeling a sense of pride. "Yeah, Aunt Leah got it for me over the weekend."
As they hugged, Aunt Leah called out from the kitchen, "Have a great first day, girls! Be careful, and don't forget to grab some lunch money from the counter."
Ember and Mia waved goodbye.
The morning air was crisp and cool, filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers. Ember felt a sense of freedom as they walked to school, chatting excitedly about their summer breaks and plans for the new year.
As they turned the corner onto Elm Street, Ember caught a glimpse of someone standing across the way, dressed in a black coat that seemed out of place in the warm sunlight. He was leaning against a tree, his eyes fixed intently on her.
Ember's heart skipped a beat as their gazes met. The stranger's eyes were an unforgettable yellow, like golden honey, and they sent shivers down her spine. Without thinking, she reached up and grasped the necklace her aunt had given her, the one that had once belonged to her mother. She never took it off, it was the only thing left of her deceased parents that were killed in an attack when she was little.
But Aunt Leah never told her that, she made her believe her parents died in a plane crash when she was only 7 months old. Ember picked up her pace.
Mia noticed her sudden unease. "Hey, Ember, what's wrong? Why are you rushing?"
Ember hesitated, unsure how to explain the eerie feeling that had settled over her. "I just don't want to be late, that's all."
But as she glanced back, the stranger in black was gone. Vanished into thin air.
Mia raised an eyebrow. "You're really nervous about the first day, huh?"
Ember forced a laugh, trying to shake off the lingering sense of unease. "Yeah, I guess so."
But her mind kept drifting back to those piercing yellow eyes, and the way they seemed to see right through her. Who was that mysterious guy, and why did he seem to be watching her?
As Ember and Mia settled into their seats in Mrs. Johnson's history class, Ember's gaze drifted around the room, taking in the familiar faces. But one person caught her attention - a new guy, dressed in all black, with piercing green eyes that seemed to gleam in the fluorescent lighting.
There was something about him that reminded her of the stranger she'd seen earlier, the one with the yellow eyes. Maybe it was the way he carried himself, with an air of quiet confidence that commanded attention.
But it was more than that. This new guy had the same raven-black hair as Ember, falling across his forehead in a messy swoop. His features were chiseled, with high cheekbones and a sharp jawline that made him look older than his classmates.
As he walked to his seat, Ember couldn't help but notice the way he moved, with a fluid grace that belied his tall, lean frame. There was an aura about him, a sense of quiet power that made her feel both drawn to and intimidated by him.
"Who's that?" Ember whispered to Mia, nodding discreetly towards the new guy.
Mia followed her gaze, her eyes widening in interest. "No idea, but he's definitely not from around here. I mean, have you seen those eyes?"
Ember felt a shiver run down her spine as the new guy's gaze met hers, his green eyes sparkling with a hint of curiosity. Their eyes met but she quickly looked away, her heart racing with a mix of excitement and trepidation.
As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Ember felt a mix of relief and disappointment. She had managed to focus on her classes, but her mind kept drifting back to Elijah, the mysterious new guy with the intriguing green eyes.
"Mia, I'm going to go talk to him," Ember said, her voice barely above a whisper as they walked out of the school building.
Mia's eyes widened in surprise. "Ember, that's so unlike you! Wow you must really have a thing for this guy haha"
Ember shrugged, feeling a sense of determination wash over her. "I don't , but there's something about him...I don't know, I just feel like I need to talk to him."
Mia raised an eyebrow "Okay, whatever you say" she said teasingly.
But as they scanned the crowded hallway, Elijah was nowhere to be found. Ember felt a pang of disappointment, wondering if she had missed her chance.
"Maybe he's not into sports or clubs," Mia suggested, as they walked out of the school building. "Or maybe he's just not interested in talking to people yet."
Ember nodded, trying to brush off the feeling of disappointment. But she couldn't shake the sense that she had missed something important, something that could have changed everything.
