"...You caused quite the scene."
Scotch looked at Sebastian strangely.
"I wasn't the one who started it."
"No, I understand that… But, did you have to make it so bloody? Nobody wants to even go near that place anymore, the blood has already dried."
Sebastian shrugged. He had been under a lot of stress lately and needed an outlet. It just so happened that some idiots picked a fight with him, so he took the opportunity to relieve his urges by beating the crap out of them. It wasn't as if he left any permanent injuries, he just made it clear that nobody should mess with him anymore.
"Haa…" Scotch sighed, "did you at least manage to achieve your goal?"
"Yeah, all that's left is to break out of my restraints."
"About that… It looks like we won't be able to break the restrictions in time for our escape. We have no idea how it happened, but the number of guards tripled in number. Our escape can still succeed but if you want to achieve your goal, you'd have to break in after we escape."
Sebastian frowned.
"How many days are left before the next scheduled execution?"
"Two days, the day after tomorrow is the day our escape is scheduled. During the execution, most of the guards come and watch the show, it's the perfect opportunity to go through a different path."
Scotch gestured for Sebastian to look at the side.
"The execution will take place over there. If the goal you're planning to achieve is really that important, then I can help you. But, you'd still have to do it with no energy. Although the guards won't be numerous, there are still Inheritors among them."
Sebastian looked at his legs.
"Around what time will the execution start?"
"Noon. They'll figure out that we're escaping when it's our turn on the chopping block."
Meaning they could be found out immediately or very late. It was a big risk to take. In the first place, what guarantee did Sebastian have that he could incapacitate or kill all of the guards in the prison and break the old man out of his chains that quickly? And to top it off, without his powers.
It was impossible.
'Guess I'm going to have to get Blue Rose's help with that. If I just tell Wisteria and Euphea, they'd probably be able to help me.'
With three weeks passing by since Balanos had told him about the All-Seeing Eye, Sebastian had roughly three months left before it opened. If things went according to plan, he would be able to find Merlin with plenty of time left before the deadline.
"...I'm going to have to abandon my other goal for now. Let's focus on getting out first."
"Got it, I'll pass the word to Rex. Also…"
Scotch handed him a letter.
"Prisoners are allowed to receive letters twice in their lifetime, one when they enter, and one when they eventually have to 'leave'."
Sebastian opened the letter immediately after seeing the House of Luna's seal but paused when he was about to read. It took him a while to find his courage and as he began reading there was a bitter smile on his face.
"I hate you, huh…"
He could do nothing but scratch his head. There were just three words written on the paper, it didn't even have a sign so it wasn't a proper letter. There was a ring that came with the letter, Sebastian tightly held it with his hands before giving it a kiss.
"I'm sorry."
Sebastian apologized while holding the ring to his forehead. It was the engagement ring that he and Amy both shared. He could only interpret her feelings by sending him this ring that she wished she would never part with.
"A ring? Is she asking for you to propose or…"
Scotch was tactless and backed down as soon as he saw Sebastian's tired expression. He walked away since he was already done with his business.
There were two ways to interpret rings that were sent to their lovers. If an estranged couple were to be separated for weeks or months at a time and the woman were to send their ring, either engagement or marriage, it could only mean one of two things, hope to rekindle their love or divorce.
If the ring was sent by someone else, it would mean their significant other's death.
But with the words, 'I hate you', there was only one choice.
Sebastian was despondent for a while. He obeyed the guards' words and schedules to the letter. Scotch could do nothing but wait for him to get over it.
In the end, the day of the escape arrived. Sebastian tried to act calm on the surface but Scotch, Rex, and Liz could feel his uneasiness.
"Are you sure you're prepared for this? We can't have any of us messing this up. There are no second chances with what we're trying to do."
If a toddler tripped while trying to walk, they could just stand up and do it again. If an adult were to forget an appointment, they could make up for it later. However, would prisoners on death row be given a second chance if they failed to escape?
It would be more believable to say that an idiot bought an invisible robe that he couldn't see but still did so because the sellers themselves told him that if you don't see it, then you were a fool and then ended up parading in the streets naked as the day he was born.
"I can do it."
Sebastian reassured them. Even in his worst condition, he wouldn't make any empty promises. Even if his mind and heart are in turmoil, his body would move for him, he wouldn't have any problems doing whatever Rex and the others asked him to do.
In the end, it was all just combat and picking locks.
Sebastian was an assassin, and a highly trained one at that. He could pick locks faster than people could drink a glass of water. And on top of that, his skill in close combat was better than even the best knights of any kingdom.
A knight might have more muscle, but they wouldn't have more experience in combat than those who risk their lives everyday fighting and killing.
Rex looked at him and nodded. He gathered everyone and began talking.
"There are five phases we need to go through to get out. First is avoiding surveillance, this will be provided to us by the execution. However, we only have at most half an hour before the guards begin to suspect our absence."
Rex drew on the ground. It was a rough map of this place that everyone here had already seen before. Sebastian was also taken to some of those places before, to familiarize himself with the general area.
"Two, we get to the armory. To do that, we'd have to go through at least two dozen guards armed to the teeth and with abilities as well."
There were around fifty or so of them leading this prison break but once they start the chaos, more and more prisoners will come to join them. They had an estimated count of around three hundred in total.
As long as they had weapons, a few of them should be able to escape. Everyone agreed to participate in this plan with that knowledge. A regular prison could be broken out of easily, but in a place like this, far from any other form of civilization, what to do after getting out would be harder than the escape itself.
"Three, we go through the checkpoints, all of them. They should be almost empty and there's a chance we could get our cuffs off early as well."
Rex marked two lines on the ground. They were the checkpoints Sebastian had to go through when he first arrived here. The confiscation of personal items and chaining of the prisoners happened there.
"The fourth step, if the guards aren't idiots, they'd already be alerted by now and are waiting for us. With everything we've gathered, we put the fight to the guards guarding the gate. I won't lie and say that we'll all make it out of this alive, especially considering the fact that none of us have any abilities to use.
"However, what I can guarantee is we won't abandon you when we can. That way, we'll all have a better chance of escaping."
Rex finished his speech and pointed outside of the gate.
"The final step is the actual escape itself. I'm sure you all already know this, but we're all wanted criminals whose faces are well-known by the various cities. To those who plan to live quietly, live in the countryside or a remote village, to those who want to make a return to society, take a fake identity and say goodbye to your old life. And… to those who will continue to do crimes, run for the hills. Being bandits is no better than being dead, but you do what you can to survive."
His support would end once they step out of the gate—whether they live or die didn't matter to him anymore.
Sebastian didn't know if he would be a part of that category as well. However, he didn't intend to leech off of Rex and his crew after he escapes. While Rex is strong, Blue Rose was far stronger and more influential. There would be no need for him to waste more time seeking Rex's help with his limited resources.
After being briefed, everyone scattered around the place. After around an hour, the execution finally started. Three prisoners were taken from the crowd and the guards surrounded them. They were in despair, but there was nothing they could do but accept their fates.
Sebastian turned his eyes away and began to walk ahead. Many others who were a part of the plan were also getting into better positions.
Only Sebastian kept walking, straight towards a guard at that.
"Hm?"
The guard looked at Sebastian and was just about to tell him to step back but before he could, Sebastian took a step forward. He moved so fast that the guard saw nothing but an afterimage. His throat was slit with the dagger Sebastian stole and blood leaked out, he couldn't scream to alert his fellow guards in time.
The other prisoners began to crowd behind Sebastian to hide the body and he continued advancing.
