Capítulo 1: Prologue: Brandon, Son of Smallfolk

In the cold and windswept lands of Barrowland, where the moors stretched endlessly beneath a sky of eternal gray, life was as harsh and unforgiving as the biting winter winds that howled through the valleys. The land itself seemed to mirror the cruelty of its ruler, King Amber, whose iron grip strangled the hopes and spirits of all who lived under his dominion.

Barrowland was a place of ancient history, steeped in the legends of old. It was said that the first men who settled there had carved their homes from the bones of giants and that the hills themselves were graves of forgotten kings, buried deep with their treasures. But those tales had long since been overshadowed by the reality of life under King Amber's rule—a reality where the common folk, the smallfolk, toiled in endless misery, knowing no other life but one of suffering.

Amidst this bleak landscape, there lived a young man named Brandon, son of smallfolk. He was born in the shadow of Amber's castle, a towering fortress of black stone that loomed over the town of Greystone like a vulture over its prey. Brandon's father, a simple farmer, had tilled the rocky soil of Barrowland for as long as he could remember, just as his father had before him, and his father before that. Theirs was a life of unrelenting hardship, where the land gave little and the lord took much.

From an early age, Brandon had known the sting of hunger, the cold of winter, and the whip of the overseer. He had seen his father beaten for failing to meet the impossible demands of the tax collectors and had watched his mother weep silently as she mended their threadbare clothes by the dim light of a tallow candle. Theirs was not a unique story in Barrowland, for King Amber's cruelty was felt by all, and the smallfolk suffered most of all.

King Amber was a man of legend in his own right, though not for reasons that brought honor. He was a tyrant, feared and reviled by his subjects, whose name was spoken in whispers, if at all. His rule was absolute, enforced by a legion of soldiers who answered only to him. The king's edicts were law, and those who disobeyed faced swift and merciless punishment. It was said that Amber had been born in the very heart of winter, his soul as cold and unyielding as the frozen ground. Some whispered that he was not entirely human, that the blood of old gods ran through his veins, making him stronger, more cunning, and far more ruthless than any man had a right to be.

The smallfolk had no champion, no knight in shining armor to fight for their cause. The few lords who dared to defy King Amber had been crushed, their lands confiscated, their families executed. The king's spies were everywhere, and his retribution was swift. It was a time of despair, a time when hope was a distant memory, and the future offered nothing but more of the same.

Yet, even in the darkest of times, there are those who refuse to bend, who cling to a spark of defiance no matter how small. Brandon was one such soul. Though young, he possessed a fire that set him apart from the others in Greystone. Where they saw only the futility of resistance, he saw a challenge. Where they bowed their heads in submission, he stood tall, his eyes burning with a quiet rage. He had not yet found a way to channel that rage, but it simmered within him, waiting for the right moment to be unleashed.

Brandon's father, Thom, had always warned him to keep his head down, to avoid drawing the attention of the king's men. "Survival is the only victory in these times," Thom would say, his voice heavy with the weight of a lifetime's worth of compromise. But Brandon had never been content with merely surviving. He wanted more—for himself, for his family, and for the people of Barrowland. He dreamed of a day when the smallfolk would rise up and cast off the yoke of King Amber's tyranny, a day when the land would belong to those who worked it, and not to a cruel despot.

It was a foolish dream, and he knew it. But it was a dream nonetheless, and it was all he had.

The turning point came in the dead of winter, when the snows lay thick upon the ground and the nights were long and bitterly cold. The year had been a hard one, with poor harvests and an early frost that had killed off what little remained in the fields. The smallfolk of Greystone were on the brink of starvation, and yet the king's tax collectors still came, demanding their due. It was on one such day, when the villagers had gathered in the town square to hand over their meager offerings, that Brandon's life changed forever.

The tax collector, a fat and pompous man named Alaric, rode into the square on a black horse, flanked by a dozen of the king's soldiers. He surveyed the pitiful scene before him with disdain, his lip curling as he saw the thin, ragged figures of the smallfolk, their hollow eyes staring up at him with a mix of fear and hatred. Brandon stood among them, his hands clenched into fists at his sides, his jaw set in defiance.

Alaric dismounted, his boots crunching in the snow as he strode forward. "Is this all?" he sneered, kicking at a basket of withered vegetables that had been placed at his feet. "You expect the king to be satisfied with this? Pathetic!"

One of the villagers, an elderly man named Rowan, stepped forward, his hands trembling as he held out a small sack of grain. "It's all we have, my lord," he said, his voice quavering with fear. "The harvest was poor, and the winter—"

"Silence!" Alaric barked, striking the old man across the face with the back of his hand. Rowan fell to the ground, clutching his cheek, as the other villagers watched in horror. "The king does not care for your excuses, old man. You owe him your tithe, and you will pay it, or you will pay with your lives."

Brandon felt the rage within him flare up, hot and uncontrollable. He stepped forward before he could stop himself, his voice ringing out across the square. "We have nothing left to give! The king has taken it all!"

The crowd gasped, and all eyes turned to Brandon, who stood tall and unyielding, his eyes locked on Alaric's. The tax collector's face twisted into a snarl, and he took a step toward Brandon, his hand going to the whip at his side.

"You dare defy the king's will?" Alaric hissed, his voice low and dangerous. "You, a son of smallfolk, dare to challenge his authority?"

Brandon's heart pounded in his chest, but he did not back down. "I dare to speak the truth," he said, his voice steady. "We are starving, and still, you come to take what little we have left. How long do you think we can endure this? How long before the people rise up and take back what is rightfully theirs?"

Alaric's eyes narrowed, and for a moment, there was a deadly silence in the square. Then, with a swift motion, he drew his whip and lashed out at Brandon. The leather bit into his flesh, sending a searing pain through his body, but Brandon did not cry out. He stood his ground, even as the whip came down again and again, each strike a testament to his defiance.

Finally, after what seemed an eternity, Alaric stepped back, breathing heavily, his face flushed with exertion. Brandon was left standing, bloodied and bruised, but unbowed. The villagers stared in awe, their fear giving way to something else—something dangerous and powerful.

"Let this be a lesson to you all," Alaric spat, wiping the sweat from his brow. "The king's will is absolute. Defy him, and you will suffer the consequences."

With that, he turned and mounted his horse, signaling for his soldiers to follow. They rode out of the square, leaving the villagers in stunned silence.

Brandon collapsed to his knees, the pain finally overcoming him. His vision blurred, and he felt the cold embrace of the snow as he fell forward, his strength ebbing away. But even as darkness claimed him, he knew that something had changed. He had stood up to the king's man, and he had survived. And in the eyes of the people, he had become something more than just a farmer's son.

He had become a symbol—a spark of rebellion in a land where hope had long been extinguished.

When Brandon awoke, he was lying in his own bed, his wounds bandaged, and a fire crackling in the hearth. His mother sat beside him, her face etched with worry. When she saw him stir, she let out a sob of relief, clasping his hand in hers.

"You're awake," she whispered, tears streaming down her face. "Thank the gods, you're awake."

Brandon tried to sit up, but the pain in his back was too great. He winced, lying back down with a groan. "How long…?" he asked, his voice weak.

"Three days," his mother replied, dabbing at his forehead with a damp cloth. "You've been unconscious for three days. We thought… we thought we'd lost you."

Brandon closed his eyes, memories of the confrontation in the square flooding back to him. "The people… what happened after?"

His mother hesitated, then sighed. "They're scared, Brandon. Scared of what might happen next. But there's something else, too. They're talking about what you did, about how you stood up to Alaric. Some are saying that… that maybe it's time to fight back."

Brandon opened his eyes and looked at his mother. There was a fire in her eyes that he had never seen before—a fire that mirrored his own. "And what do you think?" he asked quietly.

She was silent for a long moment, then she leaned down and kissed his forehead. "I think," she said softly, "that it's time we stopped living in fear."

And with those words, Brandon knew that there was no turning back. The spark had been lit, and it would not be extinguished. The time of reckoning was coming, and Brandon, son of smallfolk, would be at the heart of it.

For in the land of Barrowland, where hope had long been a stranger, a new legend was being born. A legend of a young man who dared to defy a tyrant, and in doing so, ignited a fire that would consume a kingdom.
