"Don't be nervous," the instructor flashed a reassuring smile. "I'm simply approaching this from a guiding perspective, discussing the matter with you. You must be feeling some confusion about your situation, and perhaps I can offer some insight."
Song Shi studied her for a moment, seemingly assessing her reliability. In the end, she let down her guard slightly after meeting the instructor's sincere gaze. "Are there many people who possess dual abilities?"
"Quite a few," she replied. "Nowadays, there are plenty in the Federation with three, four, or even five types."
Song Shi's shoulders relaxed somewhat.
"However..." The instructor's tone rose, and Song Shi couldn't help but feel her own heart lift. "Even though their genes can be analyzed to show multiple types, ultimately, only the one with the highest differentiation value can truly manifest."
"So, I..."
"Your situation is not that complicated," the instructor said, tapping on her holographic device. A picture appeared, the privacy settings were lifted, and the image projected into the air, visible even to Song Shi in the back row.
It was a simple bar chart.
"Here, look at your gene test results. Your violent-type gene is the most prominent, with a differentiation value of 49%. The healing-type is also quite significant at 38%, and while you have slight traces of other types, none of them reached the minimum differentiation value, so we won't mention them."
Song Shi was puzzled as to why the instructor had access to her gene test report, but before she could inquire, she was interrupted by the rapid-fire flow of words.
"These are simply random combinations of genes, nothing particularly rare. The Federation has many such combinations. The real issue is that people with multiple gene types often find that, due to internal competition, the strongest gene suppresses the weaker ones, leading to a lower awakening level overall."
"And you," the instructor continued without pause, "with a violent-type gene differentiation of 49%, had a chance to awaken to an A-level or higher. But curiously, you never showed signs of awakening, and during this time, the healing-type gene gained the upper hand, even showing clear signs of awakening in your body."
She spoke in one breath, then paused briefly. "It seems that now, your violent-type gene may also be showing signs of awakening."
Song Shi nodded slightly, attributing it to the system that claimed to "torture the body but not the heart."
The instructor put away the floating image and fixed her gaze on Song Shi, her tone turning more earnest. "A person's body cannot bear the immense energy of two abilities at the same time. Even if both show signs of awakening in the early stages, by the time you turn 18 and reach the final awakening threshold, both abilities will disappear without a trace."
A flash of regret passed through the instructor's eyes. "This is not an uncommon case in the Federation. So many people think they're about to become unique dual-ability prodigies, only to end up with nothing, squandering their potential and becoming indistinguishable from the rest."
Her tone grew more serious, like a parent worried their child would waste their gift and stray down the wrong path.
"That's why I hope you can make a decision soon and abandon one of the abilities. You should suppress its manifestations before you come of age, giving the other a chance to awaken."
"How do I suppress it?" Song Shi asked, noting that both abilities often appeared together, unbidden.
"Avoid the situations that trigger them. Think carefully—under what circumstances do they appear?"
Song Shi reflected on the past few days.
Whenever she got into a fight, her emotions became unstable. When her emotions wavered, the violent tendencies would emerge, and when that happened, the healing energy would appear as well.
So, she could fight, but she would need to avoid letting her emotions become unstable.
"Have you figured it out?" The instructor propped her chin up with a finger, observing Song Shi's expression carefully.
Song Shi nodded.
The instructor straightened up immediately. "Then may I know your final choice?"
"Violent-type," Song Shi said, almost without hesitation.
The instructor shook her head with a hint of regret. "As a healer, I'm disappointed that you won't be joining us, but..." She scanned the classroom, her gaze eventually resting on Song Shi's battered face. "In your current situation, the violent-type is the best choice for you."
When Song Shi heard the instructor mention being a healer, she froze for a moment. "Healer... why are you here?"
The instructor sighed deeply. "You were so focused on sleeping yesterday that you didn't even hear my introduction."
Song Shi nervously touched the end of her hair, her gaze shifting away.
I am Zhou Tan, a healer-type teacher at Renxi High School's Supernatural Abilities Branch. It was my turn to teach here yesterday and today.
Song Shi remembered that she had searched it on the virtual network before; most of the teaching staff in regulated schools were transferred from other institutions.
Zhou Tan counted on her fingers, "It seems that in a few days, your class's teacher will be here. I wonder who it will be."
Song Shi didn't care about this—whoever it was wouldn't be able to help her.
Zhou Tan looked at the silent Song Shi, sighed, and walked down from the podium. "You're not going out to take a break with them. Is it because your leg is injured? Let me take a look."
The sudden concern left Song Shi a little bewildered. It wasn't until Zhou Tan knelt down in front of her that she snapped out of her daze.
Zhou Tan gently brushed away the trembling hand that hovered over the injured knee. She carefully rolled up the loose uniform pants, revealing a large bruise, with a fractured bone spur protruding from the flesh.
Zhou Tan's hand trembled as she held the hem of the pants, disbelief flashing in her eyes as she looked up at Song Shi.
"You—" She quickly lowered her head. "Your endurance... it's truly a pity you didn't choose the Berserker path."
With that, she slowly covered the injury with her hand, a warm glow spreading out from it.
At the moment her fingers touched the wound, the pain shot through Song Shi, making her nearly faint. It felt as if an invisible hand had reached into her knee, forcibly resetting her bones. She turned her head away, not daring to watch, her neck veins bulging. Gradually, though, warmth spread through the wound, and the pain began to fade.
At the same time, Song Shi felt the injury on her back also warming.
After ten minutes, Zhou Tan withdrew her hand and stood up.
Song Shi looked down; her knee had already healed.
"That should be about it," Zhou Tan wiped the sweat off her forehead with the back of her hand, her eyes resting on Song Shi's face. "I've left the wound on your face as it is."
Song Shi touched her swollen eye with her fingers and nodded. These injuries were not important—they had to be shown to some people.
Zhou Tan had already returned to the podium, picked up her simple canvas bag, and waved at Song Shi, her smile bright. "See you at the Supernatural Abilities Branch."
...
Regaining her mobility, Song Shi made her way to the outdoor activity area, her face still bruised and swollen.
It was lively.
She found a less crowded set of steps to sit on, lazily squinting her eyes as she relished the long-missed warmth of the sunlight.
Her stomach growled at an inconvenient moment.
Unfortunately, there was still some time before dinner. Song Shi leaned her head back, imagining herself as a photosynthesizing plant.
Her thoughts drifted.
Yet, she distinctly sensed someone approaching her.
The person was sneaking around so much that it was impossible for her to ignore them.
